Come ooooon!

Outside all the intelectual masturbation that games like this inevitably bring out of reviewers, this video convinced me. The game looks really good... (and Beach Boys music always helps!)

But I just had to laugh at the "But Bioshock Infinite is also a videogame!" part and all the shooting and blood splattering that ensued. I forgot it was an FPS until then, lol... in fact I kinda prefered it as the First-Person Americana Skyward Sword I thought it was :P

Anyway, I'm interested.

This is why I never trust reviews other than Gamekult's (and even they are flawed). Every single major review site falls for hype. Most big-budget games gets an 8 to 10 note while few deserve them, so scores don't mean anything anymore.

Sheep, the lot of them.

All of the 2013 AAA releases have scored similarly -- God of War: Ascension, SimCity, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, DmC, Tomb Raid... Oh. Wait. No they haven't.

Metro 2033 took it's hardest mode to the opposite direction, human enemies and some mutants take 1 or 2 good shots to take down but the player can die extremely fast or one-shotted in some cases. You had to explore every nook and cranny for scarce resources(which are much lower than previous difficulties) and utilize stealth effectively almost every encounter.

I'll see how 1999 mode fairs in Infinite, only 10 hours until steam unlocks it...

Titles like Metro, Thief, Ninja Gaiden, etc, are examples of games with very interesting and well-thought-out hard modes. It's something I wish we'd see a lot more of.

Jeuxvideo.com gave Bioshock Infinite 19/20 (as they did with Quake 3, Counter-Strike, Portal 2, Bioshock 1, Batman Arkham City, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Dishonored, Rayman Origins and The Walking Dead).

The good:

  • Original universe
  • Incredible art direction
  • The story and narration
  • Elizabeth, who accompanies the player: she's a real plus to the immersion and gameplay
  • 10 to 15 hour-long for a first-time player
  • Simply, a memorable game!

The bad:

  • Some weapons still feel a little weak
  • We wish we could explore some areas with more freedom

l was excited about the 100/100 until I saw those ridiculously high scores for mostly average games.
To be honest, hearing it was an Xbox site, likely Xbox 360 ONLY as the case now clearly is, meant that if they had multiple near-perfect scores within a single generation of a single console it wasn't going to be that impressive of a feat. It's when we see it from, say, Famitsu and Vagrant Story that we shut the fuck up and pay attention as that was about 3 full generations in. Though they since devalued not only their perfect scores but all their high scores, so that probably makes for a bad example.

I am glad because the game not only lives up to the expectations after delays but it also manages to delve into the topics that it does.

Now, the only problem is whether to get it now for PS3/360 (will have to wait for Digital Foundry for that regardless) or wait in the hope that Irrational will port it to PS4. After the common theme of reviewers urging people to get the PC version (provided one has a system capable of running the game at level that truly outshines consoles which I don't) I'm vacillating.

Been in the dark on this one, and wasn't really considering it at the moment...but those review scores are crazy good.

Curious to see how player impressions will be a few weeks from now.

I'm pleased but GOTY chants already are rather.......preemptive.

I'm really happy to see this scoring high. I won't let it affect my expectations but good to see the game justified.

This makes me happy. Also, watching GT review the Steam version.

A bunch of people reviewed that version, notably Eurogamer, Polygon and Destructoid. They definitely put some effort into the PC version this time around it seems. Now I just need it to unlock.

Most of these reviews are PC reviews, any info on the console versions? How does it run?

Crosspost from the OT:

--> not that accurate translation:
In contrast, the technical performance of both PS3 and 360 is not that jaw-dropping.
Tearing, FPS Drops, occasionally annoying muddy textures and a general blurred picture are really bothersome. At least the art direction can save the game from looking too bad. Nonetheless it is time for a new console generation.
The final scorebox gives the PS3 version the nod.

This is current gen blowing its load, the climax, the ultimate finale. What a way to go out... incredible narrative-driven games like this are why I'm in this hobby. Can't wait to play it

That Sessler review is one of the most glowing reviews of a game I've ever seen.
i agree 100%, now im more hyped then ever to play this game, im also addicted to XCOM, a game it never cross my mind but since it was free i said what the heck, man that game is awesome as well, seems 2K really knows how to pick em

If you have no interest in partaking in nothing but criticizing the reviews then don't post.
Says who?

EDIT: And yes, I don't expect this game to be anywhere near as good as these votes are suggesting. Most of the reviews are implying this is "as good as Bioshock" which is a game I never liked, but that's not even the point anyway.
The point is that it's both hilarious and embarrassing to see people pretending to be surprised and in awe with these scores, as if they were actually unexpected.
As if a minimum of "9 out of 10" wasn't the average we should have expected.

And yes (X2), let me stress it's funny to read things like "100%? This game must be perfect", in a chart where Skyrim is 99% and ME3 9&6%.

Do you believe the hyperbole of the reviews or of Gaffers? I've been let down by both so you know what that means right? Make up your own damn mind.

I agree. I didn't even like Bioshock I all that much when I played it. This one looks appealing to me by the art direction and the fact that it has colors, but hyperbole is dangerous.

it definitely sounds like there's less exploration than in Bioshock, which I was a fan of and more like pushed in a line forward, that's a tough negative to swallow.

Wow, the ps3 version is better? Go figure...

It's a hard decision for me :
- PS3 version looks better but I hate the controller
- 360 version looks worse but I love the controller
- PC version looks best and I love Mouse/KB controls but I guess it won't run that good on my Laptop (i5@2,93 GHz, 8GB Ram, Nvidia 540M)

After I read some impressions in the OT, I have a weird GTA4 feeling about this

I get the feeling that this might be one of those 'experience' type of games where reviewers throw good design to the wayside because omg dat atmosphere/story/ambience/blah blah

I don't really buy into those things at the expense of good gameplay. I'm hoping this isn't one of those

Vocal "everything is shit" GAF is just as bad as the over-hyped reviewers. Truth is usually somewhere between the two extremes.

Get the better console version (PS3). It's not a hard decision based on the text so far.
