Black Adam - Review Thread

I'm confused, so is it good or not?
People seem to like it.

Others think it’s the greatest movie of all time and is the first step to #RestoreTheSnyderverse until they find out the credits scene keeps Josstice League canon. Then it’s shit.

I’m not too assed to see this. In The sense I think I will wait until it comes to streaming. Not really a day one cinema viewing for me. But I hope it does well.

Rock the Dwayne Johnson seems like a nice fellow.

Oh wow some of the reviews i read are just horrible .. one was complaining that he wasn’t really of Egyptian descent.. so he wasn’t fit to play the role. 🤣 then that the story was basically not woke enough because they don’t play up slavery aspect well enough . 😵‍💫

Can’t we just agree there are no real reviewers anymore?

If you can’t even get the shills to give you a high RT score out of the box, then you know you’re in trouble…

Lets face it, the trailer made this look like typical superhero trash, so a poor review aggregate is not unexpected.

Cue all the ‘this was made for the fans, not the critics’ bullshit.

Now to see what the BO is like. If it goes well under The Batman then that’s pretty damn bad. If it goes under Love and Thunder it’s worse.

If it goes under Shazam, then

Tracking about as I expected given the teasers and trailers. Reading the reviews my fears seem to be founded: they needed a stronger supporting cast. Even just one character. I feel like they needed a bigger, known, charismatic star to play Hawk Man - and they should have portrayed that character like his comics counterpart to act as a foil to Black Adam. Two old warriors out of time, only Hawk Man learned sympathy and fair justice over the course of his many lives, while Adam obviously hasn't. And since Cyclone is basically a completely unknown character, it was the perfect chance to cast a known up and comer to try to attract younger viewers.

Anywho, regardless I am going to see it this weekend. He's one of my favorite characters, and I like the idea of them exploring the middle eastern geopolitics that they dabbled with in JSA and 52.

Apparently the JSA get next to zero character development or background.

How is it possible for WB to keep making the same stupid mistakes, over and over and over again?

Hmmm, doesn't sound like something I can take the kid to and I'm not sure it's worth a sitter.

I do love DC so much, their animated division consistently knocks it out of the park, but it's just SO HARD to muster the energy for live action capeshit these days.

This'll hit HBOmax in a month, right? Hmmm, do I keep that service after HotD just for this? Decisions decisions....

They don't do the 30 day window anymore. It'll be 2-3 months of theatrical viewing before going to streaming.

I'm going this Sunday with my homies. I don't care about the reviews. I'm going to see it regardless. Reviews are mixed and we'll either like it or not. Either way, it'll give me and my crew something to talk about when we leave the theater.

Betting most of these same reviewers try to tell us She-Hulk and Rings of Power aren’t poorly made shit. I don’t trust reviews anymore. It stopped being about the quality of the content years ago.

The movie RT scores have felt a lot more accurate than the TV ones recently.

The Batman, Maverick, Thor 4, Jurassic World 3, Halloween Ends, Uncharted, Morbius, Dr Strange 2, etc.

All those films have just about got the right RT score for where they are as films. Can't think of any that have wildly wrong RT scores from the critics, as opposed to the general consensus.

Black Adams looks to be mediocre. Which is no surprise.

Seeing it Thursday and I'm just hoping for a decent superhero spectacle. My biggest concern is if I'm going to see the character as Black Adam or if it's going to be The Rock playing Black Adam like he is in all his other movies.

I’m going to go into this with my brain on pause. Like I do most super hero movies.

So if it's scoring about 50% ish that means there's no / not enough diversity or spotlighting right?
That would be the theory. Virtue signaling/aggressive casting diversity as a hedge against negative reviewers getting called out for an -ism.

Personally, so long as the review just confirms what I already think I don't mind if they are positive or negative :p

I just find the rock insufferable nowadays, and Impossible to find him entertaining.

So it's a pass from me
I usually like the Rock, at least when he is funny. Stuff like that San Adreas quake film though, he can't carry the whole movie in a more serious role. But Baywatch, the Jumanji flicks, that river boat one, the buddy cop F&F spin off, I thought he was a big value add to what otherwise would be a fairly pedestrian experience.

So if he is walking that line between winking at the camera as Black Adam and taking it serious, it might work. If he is just full on grimdark though, I dunno. I think The Boys and that Invincible cartoon kinda filled my stomach for that stuff.

I don't understand why they can't get their act together. These movies make big bucks, yet they can't cobble together a good movie.

They struggle so hard to make a decent movie these days. Is it really that hard to make a fun and cool movie about a superhero? why is it THIS bad, it's so weird, you would think they would have found some good superhero directors at this point with so much on the line.

Yes, that's right. No films starring white men review well on Rotten Tomatoes these days. Certainly not big blockbusters, put out by major studios.

Deadline reporting that the film looks to opening softer than initially predicted, probably due to the poor reviews.

https://deadline.com/2022/10/black-adam-dwayne-johnson-box-office-opening-worldwide-1235148749/

...which sounds very familiar for a DCEU movie.

A lot of questions for WB if this underperforms. They'd potentially be in a situation where they are relying on Ezra Miller to save the DCEU :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Black Adam is a character almost no one has ever heard of, what did they expect? How they didn't work this into Shazam 2 is beyond me, they got that character somewhat into the public eye, that's his power related nemesis, yet the two films seem completely disconnected. WTF?

I feel like the DCCU is always restarting from the ground floor, they never seem to be able to capitalize on momentum from project to project like the MCU. They need Batmite to act as a bridge character tying all this crap together or something :p

Why do these fucking morons think that anyone cares about critic reviews anymore? It's at 7.5 on imdb, if it flops it's not because of the reviews.

Could be just me but has the rock achieved anything close to action stars like Arnie or Sly? I mean yes, some of his movies make tonnes at the box office but honestly, where is his Rocky? His Rambo First Blood? His Terminator/T2? His Total Recall? Somehow though he is a massive box office draw basically starring in very average to below average films...

I think it's harder to be an action star these days. Movies just don't take the risks they did back when Arnie and Sly were on top. And people didnt have RT or Metacritic so they didn't know they were supposed to hate movies before they went to see them. They went to see explosions and titties and it was just fun.
