Black Desert Online |OT| Come on in, the sand's fine [Mediah Update]

I've set up my Steam Controller so I never have to take my thumb off the right trackpad while fighting. It takes getting used to but I've become pretty proficient with it in a short amount of time.

I don't have a Steam Controller. I'm playing with a DS4. I already have the two main attacks on triggers, but because the game refuses to recognize the shoulder buttons, I have no aim with some attacks(basically I have it configured so those are the AoE ones).

Hm ya know, I should try clearing some space on my ssd and see if it helps some of my problems. Anyone know if it's a big improvement?

I'm playing with a SSD and there's still a lot of pop-in and LOD problems, I don't really want to try how its on an HDD :/

Tbh I got used to it and I don't notice it much, but I guess it's also because I have more performance problems to worry (basically everything CPU reladed, low fps in cities and some stutter on the open world when there's some players around)

Unless something has changed, they've said they won't be doing it as of late February.

I read about it quite some time ago (a year or more) for the korean version so they changed it to what you linked. Hadn't followed too much on the forums and the like, so I missed this update :|

that's a nice forum post though, thanks for linking.

For anyone reading that interview, keep in mind that this was conducted before the conclusion of CBT2 so the comments on the dye system and other topics may no longer be completely relevant as things could change based on feedback from NA/EU.

Well, it's not only the technical aspect, although its one reason. Game has big pop-in and LOD problems even with the biggest cards and SSDs.

It's also that the game was not being created with consoles in mind, it's very focused on KB+M, imagine navigating through the UI and all its menus (workers, nodes, crafting..) with pad only.
Even though you can put a mouse in a PS4, game would need a huge revamp to accomodate pad only players, and I don't think PA is up to that (game is not that popular to justify a sort of remake of a lot of it's aspects for a console userbase).

I do, controls well enough for fighting and traversing (although targeting isn't the best and you will lose everytime against a PvP player if you want to PvP). It doesn't help that I play Ranger and seems like it's the less pad friendly class lol

Navigating the UI is kind of a mess, still possible, but take into account the UI is all mouse based.

Gamepad support is an afterthough, and it works only because the gameplay (combo based fighting) adapts well into a gamepad, but the game was never meant to be played with a pad only.

Thanks for the response.

I was mainly thinking about this for my wife because she may have trouble with some of these combo attacks with a KB+M. It's a lot different than WoW in the combat department.

Regarding KB+M, you can still drag skills onto your hotbar and activate them that way but you are limited to 9 slots. Using some shortcuts can help.

For example, a combo might be S+LMB, RMB, S+RMB, LMB+LMB, but if you have those skills on your hotbar, it could also be 1, 2, 3, 4. I tend to use the shortcuts because I find the 9 slots limiting and it feels intuitive to me based on the combat but there are times when I just hit the hotkey instead.

Not as far as I'm aware. I've ready plenty of people said they see no difference between a regular HDD and SSD.

I'm running it on my SSD and the game still has abysmal pop-in. I never even bothered with installing it on a HDD.
I have the game installed on my raptor hdd and pop-in is pretty dreadful. I thought JC3 pop-in was bad but this one is on a whole new level.

Could I get an invite to the EU guild please? =D I don't have time to play too much, but it will be great to have an active group to chat with (and pester with questions about how the hell nodes work =P) when I do.

Character name is Kestra Cadellane.

Comboing it's the best part about playing with a gamepad. It's basically like an action game. The only problem is that there's no lock on, so depending on your button layout you may not be able to aim if you're comboing and the enemy moves (I rely on AoE attacks in those situations).

Take into account that, atleast for me (lvl 22 Ranger) I have up to 5 buttons with different attacks to combo with, so with some combos I just can't use the right stick to aim.

Today I just want to unlock the most remote nodes and just trade between them, the starting locations trading posts are overwhelmed.

There's not many better feelings than connecting nodes and seeing your rare item you got go from 30% value to like 110% value.

So I have all the nodes connected from Olivia Coast to Velia for fishing but I still get the message that I'm trying to trade items from an unconnected node. I don't understand D:

Moved my install to an SSD. Only real difference is the load speed into the game, otherwise the performance, pop-in etc. is all the same.

Can I get an invite to the EU Gaf Guild if possible? Here's my info:
Server: Jordine, Serendia(?) 1
Family Name: Luxtos
Character Name: Isarra

Playing as a Sorceress for now and really just fucking about.

I have a pretty good computer, playing this on a Predator x34, 4.7ghz 2500k, 980 Ti G1, Samsung 850 Evo, and so forth, and there is nothing that can be done to the pop-in. I'm pretty sure the draw distance is just hard coded that way and not changeable, likely because there would be a firestorm of people with mid level hardware who would be unable to have the draw distance very high because of the level of detail. What they really needed to do was make object clutter and ground detail on levels so that draw distance could be raised in exchange for ground detail. (think when Oblivion released and the grass was a performance killer)

The pop-in doesn't bother me too much, what does is the massive performance drop in cities. I wish there was an option to reduce the number of players visible at any given moment (maybe replace the rest with orbs ala Fable or just not at all). Actually, even without a performance gain I'd like that because holy shit at the amount of people/wagons/horses just standing around fishing/trading etc. I guess this is just an MMO thing though, I remember the hub areas in FF14 being similar.

Guess online games are not for me and this one also shows it. Tried it now up until the point where I had several quests from the shadow thingy where I have to kill goblins but I am not truly enjoying it.
While it looks beautiful and the gameplay mechanics are all absolutely solid, It's all fairly overwhelming to me and it doesn't feel as "personal" (for a lack of a better word) as a regular single-player game to me. I'm also one of these guys who always prefer controller over KB+M and given that this game has about 30 different things to assign the buttons to it's definitely not designed for controller. The quests I played so far also don't feel that engaging but maybe that changes later. I will give it another try tomorrow. Good thing I only have a guest pass.

The mechanics of what to do in the game are incredibly poorly explained. Like, I still really don't get nodes and workers and all that, and the knowledge I do have of it had to come from outside sources. I wouldn't put those problems on the genre, but just doing a horrible job of having a tutorial. Every player should have some required quest that explains how shit works in the game. I accidentally found the quests on gathering resources. How can those not be mandatory?

That's my second biggest complaint with the game, after the performance issues and before the voice acting. If this had a solid in-game tutorial about the economy, crafting, housing, workers, nodes, etc. I'd be a lot happier.

It's a very extensive and overwhelming game, even compared to other MMORPGs. It takes awhile to understand things like the Node/Worker/Contribution Points system. Stick with it, learn the systems, and you might find it very rewarding. Try and set a goal too beyond simply doing every quest and leveling up. If you need help with anything, you can always ask us here or in the Discord channel.

I don't know how traditional controllers work with the game (only tried it once, briefly) but the Steam Controller works excellent with the game. I've been playing with it since the beginning and I love it. <3

Any officers online for a NA guild invite? Family name is Mizzrahi.

Guild is full right now. :<

I could understand perhaps maybe making the game better lead you to the tutorial quests (maybe even mark them separately from regular quests), but definitely not mandatory. A lot of people like to figure it out on their own, and making them mandatory would make alts a real pain in the ass.

I too was overwhelmed at first, and I am barely starting to grasp how some things work.

Now those who have been playing the game longer can tell me if Im wrong, but it almost feels like we are playing a game that started with much less systems in place, and was fleshed out as it grew over its 2 years or so existence in Korea?

It really feels like in the US version we have to deal with a more complex gameplay due to added elements over time being all available at once... but maybe Im wrong and it was all there at release in Korea in 2014?

Anyways, Korean mmos are typically grindy and with obtuse mechanics in many cases, but bdo fortunately offsets this by some amazing art (graphics and music) and many original elements like carts, horse taming/ breeding, workers and nodes, and its dual emphasis on guild warfare and economic features with crafting/ trading.

A few more dungeons to explore in end game and more in and out of game clothing options would truly complete it (though I am nowhere near end game atm).

I'm all for figuring out some stuff on my own, but the node, worker, and crafting system is so complicated and not intuitive as to be infuriating. That's without mentioning the various forms of "currency" like energy, contribution, investment, and so on, which I still don't understand at all. I legitimately have no idea what I am doing and the game offers basically no help, and I'm a vanilla WoW, GW, GW2 veteran so some of this stuff should at least be familiar.

My game freezes constantly when I enter Calpheon, total pain in the ass to restart it.

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

This is a different beast altogether.

Watch youtube tutorials and play with the systems. You can't "fuck up" other than losing a bit of time.

Actually, it shouldn't be familiar. World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and Guild Wars 2 are about total opposites of this game. :p

I do agree there should be some better resources tho. It's not immediately obvious how contribution points in particular work, nor is it obvious that they're not "spent" when to use them and you can always reclaim them later.

What's the member limit? I saw some posts about being able to increase it.

Just wondering if I should wait for more to open up, or find another guild.

Didn't know there was a member limit, have been trying to snipe a free slot for a few days :(. I'm also playing on EU; how's guild capacity there?

US guild is getting bigger and bigger, that's awesome. Didn't think so many people would be interested in the game since there wasn't much discussion on any of the closed betas.

100 is the cap. The guild is capped at around 70 at the moment til we expand it again.

Having to fight other players for mobs on the Orcs quest is soul crushing... guess I'll do it when I finish my work tomorow during the couple hour before the server population become too high.

I guess I also need to grind lower lvl mob a little, I'm getting underleveled compared to the quest I receive and mobs take quite some time to kill.

On the bright side it mean more time for fishing. ^ ^

Yeah, the quests aren't designed to keep you at a certain level curve. They expect players to level primarily through grinding.

How does PvP work in this game? Are there certain areas where anyone can attack anyone? I've only been in the few early areas and I guess that's a safe area.

I did it a few time ( still solo, never tried to grind in a group ) but it's true that I have been rushing quest for the past 2 days to get more contribution point.

hair saturation setting please

why does everyone's hair have to be a shining beacon to the cosmos

I mean the game's called Black Desert and I'm pretty sure evolution did the rest.

but yeah, I've seen that quite often in game. Thankfully my old wizard gramps doesn't have that problem

I hate this. My hair looks perfect in the character creator but in game it never ever looks right. I was thinking it was because I'm not playing on max settings or something.

Even on max setting my character's hair has a neon glow

Did you adjust the "shine" setting for hair?
