Black Lives Matter UK said: "Whilst at London City Airport a small elite is able to fly, in 2016 alone 3,176 migrants are known to have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean.

"Black people are the first to die, not the first to fly, in this racist climate crisis.

"We note, however, that the UK is willing to charter special flights to remove black people from the country based on their immigration status."

Black Lives Matter added: "This action was taken in order to highlight the UK's environmental impact on the lives of black people locally and globally.

"As the largest per capita contributor to global temperature change, and yet among the least vulnerable to its deadly effects, the UK leads in ensuring that our climate crisis is a racist crisis."

So this is a environmental protest and not about black lives? I feel like black lives matters is becoming like the occupy movement. No real goal and members will each go do their own thing rather than focusing on one goal.

Is there a link to a more official statement from this group?
Because the choice quotes in the article make it seem like they don't have much direction and its association to BLM is loose at best

Silly to block a runway though. If a plane spotted them last minute it could have been a tragedy. Their road block of Heathrow(?) was much safer

CLIMATE RACIST CRISIS IS A [illegible] (crisis?)

No, wait... that weirdly placed red line...

Maybe it's CLIMATE RACIST CRISIS IS NOT A [illegible]
Or CLIMATE CRISIS IS NOT A RACIST [illegible]

The statement combined with the picture reads as a bunch of UK activists appropriating the name because it's in the news and can get them attention.

As in it ain't black folk fucking up the environment generally but they suffer for it.

Cheers. I sorta understand it better now. As someone said though, it seems pretty risky to be on the runway compared to roadblocks, no?

Edit: That video by UKBlm seems...well the facts seem kinda suspect, I think. Average wage of a LCA passenger is 90k+ per year? Doesn't seem that...likely, I think. As someone said I'm not sure how the UK can be largest per capita contributor to Global Temperature Change, but I admit it's not like I'm particularly educated on the matter.

I actually can't see a black person in that lie down picture lol, so that's possible

But ther seems to be statements that match their intention on the official BLM UK twitter so maybe not.

??
Largest per capita? According to who? There are like 20 countries in front of the UK.

does that say Climate Crisis is a Racist Crisis?
Rich people/people in rich countries can probably ride out climate change unless it literally kills the current ecological system (which it might) but even minor climate events like storms and droughts can fuck poor people hard.

There's a pretty significant racial component dividing rich and poor, so yeah that sounds legit, honestly.

Why are the protesters white? Fuck white people are now appropriating the movement?

To be fair at least at some BLM demonstrations in the UK i've seen a lot of people who aren't black showing solidarity and protesting along with them, so I'm not sure its appropriating but...you never know :/

My student union at Uni notifies us of a bunch of protests, sometimes for things like tuition fees, jobs, refugee crisis or the tampon tax etc but also for BLM stuff so I don't think it's appropriation...completely? Or at least sometimes its not.

Oh yeah, I didn't question it in a "Wtf are they on about way" it's just I'd never seen that before so part of me was wondering "Wait, how?". Makes sense though, I think.

Jesus Christ, these guys. City airport isn't even that much more expensive, it just exists to service... Duh duh duuuhhh, the City, so most of its destinations are other financial hubs (Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Geneva, NY etc - actually there's a cool thing about their flights to NY but it's a bit off topic) and are business users. So yeah, their salaries probably are higher, but they aren't paying for them anyway.

Is BLM UK some racist organisation that tries to make fun of the BLM movement and black people?

They're not doing BLM any favours so far. Most Brits first exposure to them was that Heathrow protest which messed up a lot of people's holidays.

British people love their holidays. Fucking with them is NOT the way to get people onside.

Now, I can already hear certain posters typing out their "Well those people were never receptive to BLM's message anyway" response - well maybe so. You only get one chance to make a first impression though.

Some black people are trying to go on holiday to get the fuck out of this country. Fuck man, give people a break. Do it somewhere reasonable, outside government buildings and such, not an airport or streets near them.

The irony is that every party wringing hands now about immigration has shown very little concern for climate change, which in the long run will probably make today's immigration crisis look like some petty stuff in comparison.

Exactly, it's not an exclusive airport for City workers only.

If they're worried about climate change and it's effect on black people they should figure out a way to slow down Africa's population growth. Because with temperatures rises being inevitable, there's no way that continent can sustain 6 billion people and that's what it's projected to reach till 2010

Yeah, but to be fair someone did point out that non disruptive protests don't work much. Doesn't mean there isn't a method to do it well though, especially as/if BLM moves beyond America.

None of those people in the photo are black. Neither do they seem to be actually promoting immediate black causes or racial representation

You can't just slap BLM as your group's name for whatever cause you happen to be promoting, UK. What the hell, this doesn't do the actual BLM any favors.

If your making a stand against climate change, call your group something related to climate change

Man, tell that to the victims of continual flooding year after year.
