Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

I have plans to sell my iPad 2 to get a 3, but if they could make an 8 inch tablet with identical specfications to iPad 2, I might just get that purely for the weight saving. The damn things are too heavy, and a weight reduction would be just as appealing as a retina display.

There have been zero leaks of parts for such an iPad meaning if it is indeed coming it won't hit the same day as iPad 3. You'd have a long time to wait watching people with their shiney new iPad 3's.

iPad 2 price slash for a new entry level price
iPad nano with A6 dual core but current iPad 2 resolution mid price or for people who want a smaller / lighter / thinner size
iPad 3 high end retina / quad

Covers entire market and all prospective tablet buyers
If they're gonna call it anything, it won't be 'iPad nano'. Probably iPad Mini or something.

That depends on whether they use a 7" pr 8"...

I guess a smaller screen could have an appeal, but I wonder how much they would be segregating the app market? I don't think the apps would need redesign, especially with the ratio stays.

But you have it right I think; covering all markets. I don't expect a Mini announcement though, that's probably next year.

I don't know, maybe I'm hopelessly naive, but I think there's still value in saying "did you see/get the new iPad?"

Yeah, at the moment it has great pull.

In the longer term though can see then migrating to a line-up to cover all bases, like the MacBook. A smaller version is an easy way of gaining some new appeal, can see that happening next year.

Don't forgert though all recent rumors show Apple is planning on making the MacBook line more simple by merging the Pro and the Air into one single line MacBook line with the same exact form factor.

it's smaller than 9.7". smaller than current. not smaller than the rumored model.

Not the most accurate sentence structure but that has to have been what he meant.
Cheers :)
8" is smaller than 7"?

Indeed, I just woke up in snowy Sweden. Give me a break :)

It would supposedly retain the current resolution so I don't think it would be an issue.

Yeah, forgot about that bit... i'm also still drowsy. :p

For comparisons sake;

ipad-7-inch.jpg

iPad 2 (9.7") : 1024x768 : $399 16GB (+ $299 8GB?)

iPad 3 (9.7") : 2048x1536 : $499 16GB to $699 64GB

(Winter 2012?);

iPad Mini (7" / 8" ?) : 1024x768 : $299 8GB to $499 32GB ?

I'd imagine a Mini release taking place either before the holidays or early 2013, but the former sounds more likely. It would probably also cut into the iPad 2 existing as the baseline, getting rid of it.

When iCloud progresses, I can totally see a cheap $300 model for 8GB existing, to emphasize the capabilities of streaming video/music content from the cloud. 8GB's would basically just be for apps and books at that point.

Maybe. The ones in the Samsung Galaxy S II weren't. They also had low resolution. I love the screen on my iPhone 4S and don't see the benefit of OLED screens.

As a Zune HD owner, I want to get back to OLED screens as soon as possible. Never had an issue with the screen in sunlight, black is black, colors look awesome. Standard LCD really doesn't cut it anymore. I don't want any of that PenTile shit, though.

They do pop. Still why is that important? I'd rather a high resolution display like on the iPhone 4(S) than a low resolution display with colors that pop.

And really, WVGA is not a "low resolution". It's all about the pixel density anyway.

Ah ok. Although it must be said that dropping down to 8" wouldn't make an appreciable difference to the portability of the iPad. Even 7" would be stretching it a bit as the 4:3 aspect ratio makes the iPad much wider than other tablets in that class. A smaller 4:3 iPad would have to be around 6" to fit the supposed use case. I could only regard an 8" as an inferior knockdown model to make more money.

I wouldn't want a 7 or 8 inch device. The iPad as is already pretty eminently carryable (thin enough to fit with a laptop in a laptop case, light enough that the size reduction wouldn't be a big win, has a flat side with or without smart cover so it's easy to carry 'under your wing'). Unless they could get it down to Kindle size/weight, I don't think there'd be a material advantage.

Except, of course, in cost. So if they want to do it to try to tackle the low-end market, that'd make sense, but it wouldn't be for me.

I would imagine this being the idea, it's not very attractive to keep iPad 3 around when iPad 4 is out, or 2 when 3 is out. Something smaller for cheaper would sell more than an old model, I think.

So I sent my iPad 2 away last night to sell back, I felt so naked. Had to try to balance my Chromebook on the arm of my recliner while gaming. It wasn't easy...

They do pop. Still why is that important? I'd rather a high resolution display like on the iPhone 4(S) than a low resolution display with colors that pop.

SAMOLED displays have a larger color gamut than lcds and can dislay past Adobe1998RGB spectrum. Why anyone would think progressing past a color space standardized in 1998 isnt important should be the bigger question.

Just because you were wrong. :P

Not interesting at all as in I'm not interested.

Besides, active testing doesn't mean it's a done deal, or are have you forgotten the iPhone 5 that was in active testing last year?

If a mini happens, I don't think it's going to be this year.

I don't know, I could definitely see them gearing it up in time for the holidays.

Are we expecting a new iPhone in the holidays or summer, as well?

Kinda interesting, increasing the size of one product and decreasing the size of another.

I could definitely see them slashing this whole 3 wifi SKU 16-32-64GB thing in the future and having the retina/4g/whatever iPad that is purely 32GB (or maybe even 64GB) for $499 standard. Then, have the 8" iPad at 16GB for $299 Standard. Slaughter the competition with that right there...Then have those 4G SKU's along with it. Not this year, though.

They are talking about the unveiling date, it'll be a week or so after that most likely going by Apple's past track record.

Seems about right then.

Ugh still can't decide between iPad3 and MacBook Air. I plan to read a lot of research papers/books, so the iPad seems like a much better choice...

It depends on whether you need a proper computer or not. An iPad is a wonderful device, but it does not replace a notebook.

I guess because I'm not, into iOS stuff it's expected, but I'm kind of disappointed with the rumors so far. I was hoping Apple would really push the envelope with this tablet, and if rumors are true, this doesn't seem to be doing it.

So this is small, had real buttons and plays real games?

For a mass market product appeal, this differentiator just wont' be enough. If the ipad3 is out in March and there is a cheaper version, that will hurt the Vita even more.

Not solely because they're directly competing for gaming dollars but the market buzz, mind share and focus will all be on the ipad3 and variants.

They're real, but they're 99% bollocks.

As of the 13th, the App Store has ~100,000 games.

I'd say it's doing alright by your metrics.

From what the rumours sate, it seems like they can't really add much more. Were you expecting a redesign?

What were you expecting?
Nothing expected, but a few things hoped for. Maybe a pressure sensitive screen and a cool intelligent stylus, getting the arty crowd? Maybe some fancy dock that makes it function like a MacBook? Who knows, but a bump in resolution and processing power seems... Well good, but not envelope pushing - something I've very much appreciated from Apple.

Hmmm perhaps I was being fairly accurate then. But I'm afraid the 1% of non-bollocks are not blindingly good either.

I have come across a few gems that embrace touch and tilt in decent ways, and old school point 'n click games work fine too, but there hasn't been a single game aiming for a modern console-like experience that has been anything near good. It's just not possible with touch controls.

AMOLEDs having better battery life wouldn't be the case with iOS. Sure, when all the pixels are off the power draw is minimal, but when white is displayed on the majority of the screen the power draw will exceed that of an LCD.

What is the predominant iOS interface color? White.

I'm hoping they move forward on the software/os side, but I'm not really expecting anything grand.

I doubt we'll see either of those, but I think their'll be something more to the iPad 3 than Retina and 4G.

Perhaps there will be something more, but not on the same scale of an amazing magical screen. That's going to be the selling and focal point either way, I think.
