People are often entranced by gimmicks.
I know, Apple is making a killing because of that.

Rub, I love ya, but you're wrong. They will double the pixels on the iPad, and call it a Retina Display. The PPI is irrelevant. If they increase the screen on the iPhone, they'll still call it a Retina Display.
Absolutely. But much like the Smart Cover, I think it needs some extra magic inside each device, so it has to be developed together with the iPad itself, for full integration. Then they could sell as an option for $100 or even $200 if it really delivered a Cintiq-like experience. There's still no reason to pack it in with the device, though. It's exactly like syncing with a keyboard: not a niche use case necessarily, but outside the bounds of the bog standard use case. Give it a snappy name and sell it for $100.
Both LCfiner and RubxQub are making a lot of sense in here. I'm slightly Team Rub, but only because I hope he or she is right.
It is on indeed.
You're right, but they can easily change their word to mean something else.Retina isn't a made up standard, though...it's just a made up Apple word for that standard.
It's ridiculous to expect a 'retina experience' from 3D games on iPad 3. We don't even have a 'retina experience' on the highest-end gaming PCs running on 30" monitors.
It'll look fine. As fine as a sub-720p console game (i.e. most of them) on an enormous TV.
Gran Turismo and Uncharted aren't going to come to the iPad--they're first party games.
What are the big budget games planned for the Vita by 3rd parties? Ridge Racer? The PSP version has already been ported to the App Store and sells for $12.
The Lego games (Lego Star Wars, Lego Harry Potter) are also games that were ported over and sold ($5) for a fraction of the original price. They are extra income in a larger potential market. In the first month of sales, there will probably be many more iPad 3s than Vitas. If the porting costs are low, I think the third parties are going to jump on it, especially if Vita sales are lackluster. I think what may be more likely in the future is porting iOS games to Vita, like with Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, and the library of Gameloft games.
OK, I'm a big Apple fan, and wouldn't mind a higher-res screen, but can someone answer me this:
If I have an iPad 2 (I actually have an original one), what's the case for upgrading if all I do is web, email, Netflix?
There has to be something more to it than than just a higher res screen and a faster chip.
All of that will look way better due to retina, especial movies and text. And since you have the original the speed increase will blow away what your iPad 1 does by a extremely sizeable amount.
It will also likely have far better cameras and Siri.
When the keynote lights dim and the Schiller speaks...you shall see my prophecies fulfilled!
...oh and, you're definitely wrong here.
You're placing too much stock into some arbitrary number, and when the iPad is unveiled at a lower ppi than the 4, while still being labeled a retina display, you will have to rethink your stance.
I use a stylus on my Nexus, it's amazing.
That must be difficult while rolling your wheelchair out of the retirement home.
wait, Rub... We've been talking about iPhones all this time, right?
you don't think they'll announce an ipad with anything other than 2X the current resolution right? i mean, we've seen 2X assets from Apple for a future hidpi iPad.
Luckily the armrests act a stand for the gargantuan device, it's like having a mobile Surface.

Also, I'm with RubDub, "retina" is the moniker applied to pixel distinguishing over certain distance not a specific number.
Simple text is THE reason why retina display matters to me. It's not going to make much difference for movies or comic book scans being upscaled 2x.
The iPhone's aspect ratio is 3:2.What if they copied the Nexus's virtual keys and made the actual screen a little longer...into the the widescreen realm. You can have a 16:9 4.3 inch screen with ~720P resolution, therefore it would have just about 345 ppi.
You still have the OS and apps run at 4:3 but there's a bar on the side where you have a home and Siri button. That bar can disappear if a certain app/video supports wide screen.
This would be pretty logical but I think that's too far outside of the iPhone product design for Apple to even consider it.
Apple would never make it 16:9. That'd be crazy. The primary way to hold a iPad is vertically, thats unwieldily in 16:9. It'd make the iPad basically unusable unless they completely change the UI.What if they copied the Nexus's virtual keys and made the actual screen a little longer...into the the widescreen realm. I agree that web page text will still look better, but it won't look BETTER. I can't tell a guy to spend extra money on something that he probably won't even notice any real benefit from.
So it's very likely we're less than 2 weeks away from iPad 3 press invites going out. I am excited like a god damn school girl. Hoping we get some meaty leaks in the next few weeks.
Will iPad 3 be the dawn of "sub-hd" games on iOS? Will the A6 (quad or dual core) be able to power games like Infinity Blade 2 (but better) at 2048 x 1536?

I'm pretty sure I'll buy an iPad 3 (even though I bought an iPad 2 in December, but I'll upgrade to 4G and 64GB) if it has Retina, 4G and an A6 processor. But I want something more for upgrading from the iPad 2. Siri would be funny as i dont have an iphone 4S but it's not necessary. I can't think of other features. I don't read books as I just bought a Kindle Touch, but Retina would be good for my games, mail, calendar, websites etc. Oh yea, bring on a FaceTime HD cam and at least a 5mp back camera. But I want something "new", something "different".
Well, there is not really much "new" hardware innovations really left that are needed. I mean what more can you ask for when we are likely getting:
Improved Processor, Improved GPU, massively improved screen resolution, improved cameras, 4G, & Siri? Honestly what is left?

What I basically want from my iPad 3 (having bought an iPad 2 in Dec):
- Dual Core A6 Processor
- Improved GPU
- FaceTime HD camera / 5mp back camera
- Same form factor, same design
- Same thinnes and weight
- 4G LTE
- Siri
- Retina Display
- 64GB
- 1GB of RAM
- Better battery (to accommodate the Retina)
- New apps tailored toward iPad 3
I don't really care if Apple achieves those goals through a particular processor or GPU loadout, and I certainly don't care to the point that I'm looking for a specific quantity of RAM. I don't care if the battery is bigger or if they make power consumption more efficient or whatever. *shrugs* I guess I'm the ideal target for an iPad since I care a lot more about the results I get than the inputs it took Apple to get those results![]()
What I want from an iPad 3:
- Does more stuff
- Is better at the stuff it does
- Looks better while it's doing the stuff it does
- Around the same battery life as the current model or better
- Has the same form factor or a better one

I wonder if there will be a new Smart Cover.
You might be the ideal target but you're not exactly the average consumer that Apple targets either. In addition to the general questions you pose, an average customer will want:What I want from an iPad 3:

If there is a new smartcover you'll buy it.Hopefully the case design is close enough that the existing ones work. My year old leather cover is aging nicely.
If the old one doesn't fit, yes. If the old one does fit, no.If there is a new smartcover you'll buy it.

But what if the new smart cover comes with an Apple branded capacitive pen + holder?!
That doesn't interest me, no.
If it had some new functionality that did interest me, sure. Not sure what that would be though.
new smart cover will decrease crease size by 30%, resulting in smaller lines on screen from microfibre rubbing on it.
We will each buy 2 colors and laud the improvements.
