Even when iPads overtake PC shipments from every other company combined, some people will still be parroting they're 'not real computers'. As if there's a magic ingredient that suddenly makes a computer 'real'. When people are using iPads to replace most of the tasks they used their laptops for, then yes, they're computers. An iPad doesn't need to be a replacement for 100% of the specific things you can do with a desktop OS to be considered a computer. I wouldn't trade my Macbook Air for an iPad in a million years, as I do professional design work and need the full power of many desktop suites, but I'm able to look at the big picture and realize what most people use their computers for, and don't project my requirements on the market at large.

The iPhone wasn't allowed to be counted as a smartphone in certain circles because it lacked copy and paste if I'm remembering that right. People react oddly when Apple does stuff.

Usage patterns don't define functionality of a device. They define....usage patterns of a device.
The same people that will tell you that the ipad isn't a computer but an appliance will tell you that most people don't need a full fledged computer to begin with. Computers have always been "too much computer" for most folks.

Are you agreeing with me? I said ipad is a real computer. Just not one I would want to do anything on. Same with an old Mac II (which is a stupid comparison).
Last I checked computer doesn't equal creation. iPad is a computing platform whether people want to accept it or not, it's geared towards consumption but that doesn't mean that it is any less of a computer. Considering the average consumer does more consumption than creating with a computer, iPad is the ideal tool for many. Hell I love my MBA but I'd be lying if I said that I do a lot of creation on it. What I love about the MBA is the ease at which you can multitask, and tablets are getting better and better at this as time goes on. Jobs said it best, people are getting nervous as tablets slowly supplant traditional pc/macs, it's going to accelerate in the future. Get used to it.

anyways, here's a technical question. If iPad 3 remains a dual-core CPU instead of quad-core, will that ensure a smooth transition in terms of app performance? Would apps need to be totally re-written for a quad-core? Would it break current apps? Just curious if the rumored A5X would make the compatibility process a bit easier.

Broken was a poor choice of words. I just remember reading about a few apps having issues between iPad and iPad 2. Nothing wide spread. I was just curious if apps would have to be re-written for a quad-core. I know nothing about the technical side of things, hence my poor ability to articulate my questions.

What really defines nachos, though? There are people in here that are advocating that chips with only really good ground beef on them qualify as good nachos...when I say that you can hardly even call them nachos unless it's got all that melty cheese, the gooey sour cream, the jalapeños AND the good ground beef on them.

Being a tablet, it is not ideal for all situations and tasks. So it would be odd that somebody who is presumably tech-literate would not be able to substitute a laptop or something until the iPad3 is announced.

Concerning Kindle vs iPad for reading... I bought my Kindle primarily because I like to read giant 1000 page books and I only buy hardcover, so weight is a huge issue. The difference of a half pound Kindle vs a 1.3 lb ipad is large. But I guess it depends how you read. I read a lot in bed holding a book over my head which I would never do with an ipad.
The ipad 3 will be my couch computer, Kindle stays in the bedroom.

Well text should automatically scale up to retina resolution, but art assets won't look tht great on iPad 3. Devs will update their apps over time but it will probably take six months to a year before the majority of apps are retina native. It took about the same amount of time for Devs to do the same for iPhone apps
The laptop form factor is no longer suitable for me. It's not what I want and a poor substitute for an iPad.
I have a desktop, and it's fine for certain games and as a media hub, but that's it. The rest of my use case scenarios are better handled with an iPad.

a retina display iPad 3 will make the Kindle vs iPad argument a little more interesting. I'm certainly looking forward to using the iPad 3 for more e-reading with the higher res display. Much easier on the eyes.
Still though...my wife's Kindle does a great job if you simply want to read books in a variety of settings.

I really didn't like reading on the iPad until someone recommended using sepia instead of white for the background. After that there no issue with my eyes getting tired. iPad 3 resolution should help greatly here. I'm excited to read some of my magazines on that incredible display.

didn't know it took so long, I took the plunge into the iOS world after the retina conversion. This is a major bummer. I just hope that the popular devs already have their updates in the pipeline.
I'm sure that many of the popular apps that has active development will be updated very quickly. Just meant that the majority of apps (including niche apps) will take longer to make the jump. AAA games and other big apps (flipboard, etc) will probably go retina quickly.

The big apps will update quickly. It's the outlier stuff and certain games that take forever or never get updated at all.

That's actually a good point. I switched mine to Sepia a long time ago and just forgot...but it's definitely set that way for the same reason.
An argument against universal retina apps... App sizes are going to be a lot larger than necessary, if, for example, you only have an ipad2. Your app will contain assets for iPhone, iPhone retina, iPad, iPad retina.
Are the assets all separated or organised within the app bundle? Is it possible, say, to have the device only install the assets for that device during installation?

I'm fairly certain that the benefit of universal apps is that there isn't so much duplication of assets as there is just scaling of assets. Like the assets running on the iPad would ideally just be scaled to run on the iPhone...but wouldn't require two different files, you know what I mean?
I doubt that this is true 100% of the time, but admittedly I'm not fully in-the-know on the subject.
For what it's worth I haven't noticed universal apps being insanely larger than regular apps by any stretch. That may change when Retina becomes the standard though...because all new apps would supposedly support up to Retina level graphics.
With all the power in these things, they should probably just go real time vectors w/effects for graphical assets.

Awesome! That's what I will be doing! No really! I own a iPad 2. Don't see a need for an upgrade yet. So unless iPad 4 comes with something mind blowing... I'll be waiting it out till iPad 5.
