Boo to Blizzard. WoW can't handle big raids.

I'm *really* disappointed right now. Last night there was a huge raid on frostwolf alliance. There was a good 200-300 people gathered at ashenvale to start our march on the barrens.

From the start it was obvious stuff wasn't going to work quite right. First of all the game couldn't display all the people correctly. It couldn't fetch the information about all the players and give it to you fast enough to load them up properly. So you'd be standing in the middle of 200 people but only see 5.... or people would disappear randomly and reappear later.

Also you couldn't do any action without waiting a good minute (couldn't even poison my blades).

So anyways we start the march, you can barely make out people around you cause the servers can't keep up. Finally we get to barrens and crossroads. March into the town.... and *try* to attack. I mean try cause the game wouldn't let you attack because it couldn't process everyone's commands at once. You'd try attack something and you'd get "I'm too far" because the npc that was right infront of you wasn't, cause the server couldn't update you on positions fast enough. So we sat there trying to attack stuff but unable to.

It got lame really quick and the huge raid (after the server crashed cause of it) decided it was impossible to raid. There were A LOT of pissed off people. This kinda problem also worries me since it's more than likely the damn database problems, the same that plague everything else in the game. And database problems aren't an easy fix, and they'll most likely need to be rewritten from the ground up to fix crap like this.

Anyways here's pictures of the raid that could never be. (note there's a lot more people than the pictures show)

I played DAoC from it's release... and even when we had big raids like this it wasn't this bad. I got horrible framerates.... but least I could attack.

I'm pretty sure DAOC was built around the idea that huge raids would happen and WoW really wasn't so that's why WoW broke easier.

Hrm. I wonder what Blizzard's response to this will be.

Blizzard's usually pretty good about this kind of thing.

Knowing them, they'll create "raid servers" to handle this kind of load.

I would think the PvP servers would be considered "raid" servers... as that the intent of raids. And how blizzard put in "Raid Groups". This is not something they did not expect to happen, they just fucked up.

I mean really, the AH can barely stay alive (it goes down all the time cause too many database requests), how did they expect to get 200+ people in one area.

That kinda sucks, but I'm unclear exactly why anyone in WoW would need an army as big as yours. The best Raids I've seen are like 50 people. Hopefully they'll increase the amount of folks who can do this and still play smooth.

You dont need 300 people for a raid. Its your own servers fault for being so stupid. YAY lets break the game. How many of those morons are lvl -30 and have no business doing a raid. Hell you dont even need 300 people to raid the main cities. A group of 60 alliance members almost made it to Varimathis and Sylvanis on our server in the UC.

Break up your raids. 50-80 peopel to the barrens and let the others go somewhere else.

Name any 3rd person 3d game on any system that can handle 200+ people in the same area and have a decent performance. Nothing can.

Not. Ive played the game. Ive been in relic raids. The game chugs and half of the people go link dead during them.

And now with the new character models its even worse. Bad framerate.

Sure you can do battelgrounds fine, but those at most are 70 or so people per side, if even that

Well, big PVP raids (ala Braveheart or such) could be pretty cool, but it's pretty silly to have 200 people to raid a town.

In the closed beta, I swear I never saw more than maybe 50-60 players raid any town. on the beta server (pve) the horde was organizing big raids (killed the ironforge king once) while the most alliance did was attack towns like crossroads or tarren mill. On the pvp beta server, though, the alliance seemed to raid a lot... they went after each capital but only succeeded very early before any of the warcraft 3 heroes had special abilities. The funniest was when they tried to raid thunder bluff - a bunch of warriors, priests and warlocks got at the top of the elevator that leads to the town and used their fear abilities to make literally everyone go flying off to their deaths.

Well, a "raid" in an MMO is usually against an NPC. If you ever played EQ, a quality guild could kill just about anything in the game with 48-60 people tops. If you got close to 100, you were a zerg guild and then there were connection problems. I cant imagine how bad it woulda been with 200-300 people in EQ either.

I know its kind of a thread derail but are there any sites online that record these kinds of things?

Like from any MMO?

I saw the one raid on WoW against that dragon where everyone got killed but id like to see more stuff like that.

huge raids? MMORPG? sounds like you need Lineage2... yes I'm probably the only person on GAF that plays this game but hey, this game was made for PvP and huge-ass raids.

Battlegrounds has me excited. I liked what they mentioned about low level pvp quests for people who arent top tier yet. Thats just neat.

The new patch is actually pretty big, and the holiday addons + HOLIDAY QUESTs are pretty cool :lol

Yeah, the holiday stuff is pretty cool, although I imagine I will get sick of the sonwballs pretty quick. I was attempting to do the the Greench quest earlier today, and for the first time that I can remember the Horde and the Alliance weren't killing each other (PvP server). There were about 20-25 on each side all in groups and no one fought each other. I just wish I would have been there when the truce dissapeared and all hell broke lose, but I had to go eat.

Seeing as how the PVP system isn't even close to being finished, I don't think they have things set up yet. As they finish up the PVP system, I think we'll see less problems with lag. As of now, theres little benefit to do raids, other than to screw with the others. Personally I will stick to PVE until everything with PVP is finalized, I don't really care about waiting.
