Borderlands 2 - PC Performance Thread

How are people with 680s playing at 1080p getting drops to 30fps while others with lesser cards are getting smoother performance? Sounds like something strange is happening to me.

Yeah, I have every single thing maxed out and on 1080p with my 670 and it's smooth as silk. Don't know what's up with higher cards having a hard time.

I really have to applaud Gearbox and NVIDIA for this one - running really well with 306.23 at 5760x1080 on 4-way SLI GTX 680s with a 3960x @ 4.5 GHz. Everything maxed out and I'm getting around 50-60 FPS (average...peaks at 100+). I am sure further optimizations are to come...but the fact that things are working so well right now (typically I have tons of NV Surround issues at launch) means they actually put some significant effort to polish it up prior to launch.

Very un-PC like of you Gearbox!! :) Very awesome. I could get used to this!
I'd be pissed if a game like Borderlands wouldn't run perfect on 4 680s.

But then again, I've never been to multi-monitor res land so I wouldn't know how things perform there.

Really enjoying BL2, but its kinda weird. Have you ever seen a black and white photo, but an object in it has been given colour? Thats the weird sort of contrast I see in BL2. Physx effects going off in front of a shitty low rez hut or wall.

Has anyone seen a noticeable increase in performance when updating to the new NVIDIA drivers? I'm still using an older version, but I figure I might as well upgrade to the latest.

So, I have an i5, 8GB Ram, Radeon HD6850

I was playing with everything on max, on 1920x1080.

However, I was getting 30 FPS.

I turned off Ambient Occlusion, I got 60 FPS O_o

Big change!

So, anyone else might try that if they are having FPS issues. I dont see much of a difference graphically too.

I turned on the PhysX effects last night, and they were pretty amazing. It made me spring for a 660ti.

I am currently running a 6850 with my computer plugged into my 1080p HDTV for comfy couch. I figured the 660ti was pretty much necessary as now console ports are getting a proper PC treatment.

Hopefully it will tide me over even slightly into next-gen as far as console ports go.

how did you run physx on a 6850? hacked drivers?

Anyone have windows 8 and having trouble getting the game to start?

I've been reading about people having problems getting it to run at all..

I'm going to hold off purchasing this until it works..

I'm starting to wonder if turning of AO and bumping Physx back up to high will offset the teen fps (during hectic fights) and at least keep me above 30. I guess I will have to do some testing later on my 6970.

The IQ is so clean on PC, it's ridiculous. Going from PS3 to PC is like putting glasses on. PS3 is still so good and fun still. It actually seems to have some Physx effects in there as well. But damn if the sub 720p res doesn't hurt it.

Maybe just your processor?

I've been looking into it and that's probably it yeah. Already overclocked my proc a tiny bit and my performance improved. Gonna see if i can overclock it some more now. Spending money on an upgrade right now wasn't exactly in the planning.

It's the PhysX on high.

It isn't. My GPU isn't being battered enough to warrant turning stuff off to gain better performance.

The CPU is possibly part of it if its at stock, but a more likely reason is driver for your 5970. Is there a CAP profile for the 5970 specifically for BL2?

Not performance related but PC, I have weird bug, where if I go into the inventory or shop, the game will sometimes hang for second, then the screen will flicker and it will come back. This only happens in the inventory/shop and it's random. Anyone else see this?

Running and i5 760, a gtx580 and 8gb of ram here. Everything at max and physx high (next-gen stuff here) runs really smoothly but any time I would look at a really wide open area like this one for example (stolen from the pc screenshot thread):

ixtOUT08Fxtlq.jpg

The game chugs every time a complex area is in the vision (I don't have fraps but I'd say it goes around 30fps). It doesn't happen any other time or during the most intense combat scenes. I gradually lowered all options one by one but the problem persisted.
I didn't lower phsyx to low because I'll take the chugs instead of losing pretty particles. Any ideas?
Btw I love the framerate cap so I could see what the console settings would look like lol

Its the same for me. But i had the same issues with Borderlands 1 so i dont have any problem with it.

Physx is likely brutalizing your CPU because it is not optimized to run efficiently on anything other than an Nvidia GPU and I wouldn't imagine that turning off AO would relieve any of the that burden. It'll just decrease the load on your GPU, but if the CPU is the bottleneck in this case, I doubt it will improve things much.

This. Yes, sometimes in the hectic battles i'll get FPS drops of 5/6 at most, but just running around open environments with nothing much going on nukes my frame-rate.

Hey Gents- I just downloaded the 12.8 drivers + 12.8 Cap 3. Am I supposed to be seeing and choosing borderlands 2 application settings in the Catalyst Control Centre? Because I don't see anything. Or am I already good to go?

This games runs great on my system! Really happy with the performance :)

Gtx 570
Amd Phenom II 965 @ 3,4 (quad)
4 gb 1333 ram

Mostly high settings, no AO, Phyzxzzxz on Low, getting 50-60fps all the time.

Only thing that bothers me is that every time I alt+tab and then open the game again the fps drops to around 20 fps for like 20 seconds and then hits 50-60 again.
But other than that, well done Gearbox! :)

How bizarre. I'm running a GTX580, 8gb of ram, and an i5 3570k at 4.0GHz without any issues. Not a single drop to be found no matter what's happening on screen.

I love fluids. However viscous goop jello I could do without ;|

LOL yeah, I don't know who at Gearbox thought having a stream of shiny liquid poop come shooting out of a weapon locker into your face every time you open one was a good idea. Complete with farting noises. It's not funny, it's just... gross. I step the fuck out of the way of those before opening them now.

I have it at 1080 with everything on high and it runs very smooth on a 460GTX and looks wonderful. Physx is on low and I would rather not see how pretty it looks as I really can't afford an upgrade right now lol

i5 2500k @4.2ghz, 1080p, everything at max including PhysX and it runs flawlessly. I played up until you complete the shield quest by using the elevator so I'm still very early on but I've had some hectic battles and haven't seen any FPS drops at all (via Fraps). Running the latest 306.23 drivers by the way.

You don't need a 660ti to run this game well. I have everything on or max, PhysX medium, 1680x1050, no Vsync, runs great so far on an E8400 and HD4870 512mb.

Maybe things will slow down a bit later, if so I may turn off AO, but so far no problems.

Good to go. And, on AMD, make sure to lower physx low/medium.

Has anyone documented what the differences are with the different settings of physx?

IIRC the medium/high settings have the same "features" (debris, volumetric smoke, fluids and cloth simulation), only the quality of those effects differ between the settings.

No, just set it to high, restart BL2 and it will work. You'll get about 15 fps, but you can see the FX, and they are pretty amazing.

Pretty sure the CPU can take over physx if you aren't running an nvidia card.

Ah, just wondering. I thought PhysX was still exclusive to Nvidia. I remember reading about hacked drivers to run it on an AMD card. One of the reasons I switched to a 560ti when I upgraded from my 4870.

I'm running physx on low on my 560ti, just in case.

Has anyone documented what the differences are with the different settings of physx?

My brother and I are running the game on similar set up, he has a gtx 670, I have a 7970. Playing them side by side only thing we have seen so far different are the flags and tarpes. On the 7970 they don't move much, on the 670 they flap around a lot and look nicer.

We are not that far into the game (still in stater area), so that's all we have seen.

Core i7 950, 6GB RAM, Asus HD7970 O/C to 1125/1575MHz, getting 80-120fps (Samsung S27A950D monitor)in most area's at 1920x1080 with max settings except PhysX on Low.

The game looks awesome

For those saying they're getting no frame rate drops, are you playing 4 player games? People seem to be trying to make comparisons based off hardware and graphics settings, but you also need to factor in the differences that player count makes. Game runs silky smooth for me when I play alone, but I definitely get drops when playing 4 player games.

Whats the difference in terms of quality and performance between physx high and medium? And has anyone tested GTX 560 already?

Ps. Sux to be from EU sometimes ;\

EARLY VPN UNLOCK
If your outside US and want to play on 18th you can use a VPN to spoof your IP address and unlock the game. It pretty simple and the risk is minimal if you just want to unlock and play.

1. download free vpn app called SPOTFLUX, install and run (most other vpn tools will work as well)
2. launch steam and click on borderlands 2
3. should go through some checks and if successful unlock the game
4. turn off vpn, optionally go into offline mode in steam and play

.

Game keeps crashing after about an hour with an error message along the lines of "video memory full".
Anyone know what settings I should lower? I have pretty much everything at max except no AA and Physx at medium. Game runs really well exxcept that issue. I have an i5 and a GTX 560 Ti 2GB.

I have the same setup, I'll try that.
