Borderlands 2 - PC Performance Thread

Now I am randomly getting severe artifacting with the default BL2 SLI profile. It wasn't doing this yesterday.

If I change it to the SLI profile of another game it's fine. Any idea what the problem would be? My temps look fine.

Anyone have these issues that I have?

- Whenever I open the back button menu (360 controller on PC) and go to my backpack, when I switch to the pane where the unequipped stuff in my backpack is, I can scroll down, but sometimes I go further down and the camera won't scroll down the pane any more for me to see what I'm selecting. If I wait a bit, and then move up/down again, the camera will start following the selection again though. Sometimes it will glitch and only let me select two random unequipped items and nothing else. I can exit the menu and go back in to fix this but I still have to wait for the camera to follow the selection scrolling though.

- Every time I boot my game, it defaults again to 1920x1200 resolution (my monitor's native), but my graphics card is shit and I have to switch it back to 800x600 every time I play (don't laugh, my graphics card is shit I know). How can I fix this?

Bought the game, and I'm pretty pleased with the performance I'm getting on my rather average laptop (i5-2410M, GT 555M). At high* settings, my "baseline" framerate is around 40-50 fps, with 60 fps spikes in some situations and occasional drops to 30-35 fps when there's a lot going on (it never drops below 30 fps though). So that's certainly well above console-level visuals and performance, even though I'm nowhere near a constant 60 fps (which I'm not if I lower the settings either, so, yeah). Now, capping the framerate to 30 fps might make for a more "even" experience in my situation, but when I tried that it just felt really unsmooth (by which I mean that it felt less smooth than a typical 30 fps console game, for whatever reason).

* This particular definition of "high" settings comes with some caveats:
- Ambient occlusion is turned off. Turning it on seems to chop about 5-10 fps off my framerate, and it's just not worth that.
- PhysX is set to low. Again, the impact on framerate (although not quite as disastrous as I was expecting) from turning it up is too significant for it to be worth it.
- I'm running the game at 720p (which is perfectly fine for me at the distance I sit from my TV when playing).

God dammit, i've just seen some stream of X360 version and its like completely another game. I feel sorry for console players now, they dont know what they miss ;p

anyone with 3D vision really should checkout the helix patch

http://helixmod.blogspot.co.uk/

the fix doesn't completely fix everything but does most things and its easily one of the best 3D games out there when you apply it, think trine 2 levels of 3D goodness, just had to disable frostrum and minimise convergence and use the alice profile, can't believe how many times nvidia fuck up the profiles :/

runs well in 3D even with physx on high( if you have the cards of course ) slows down at some points but its always perfectly playable

Thank you!

Game seems pretty optimized, getting a pretty solid 30-40fps on mediumish settings output @ 1080p to an external monitor on a m11x r2 which is really starting to struggle on newer games.

Solid 60 fps on my first gen i5/5850 htpc on full settings as well.

i3 2120
4gb Corsair DDR3
2gb 6670

Running on "high" w/ MSAA x2 and PhysX on low. 720p.

Getting near constant 60fps.

Game is beautiful.

Is anybody else having performance issues with Catalyst 12.8? I have used 12.2 the whole time as anything above that broke VirtualBox but now that this issue is fixed I upgraded to 12.8 and find the general performance being the same but when turning my mouse I now have weird microstuttering :(

My graphics card is a MSI 6850 Cyclone factory OC'ed, all settings are maxed out except FXAA off, AO off and PhysX Medium at 1920x1080.

If I can't get this resolved I might aswell downgrade to 12.2 again :P

I turned the physx to low today to test performance, and you know... I prefer the game without all the extra particles. I love how cool it all looks, but when you're actually playing the game it can be hard to tell what the hell is going on. Makes it much easier to see the damage numbers as well.

I'm willing to bet that the game was mostly finished when Nvidia approached them with a deal. Now that I can see all the regular VFX work (sans physx), it's pretty obvious that the game was originally designed without it. The cloth is great though! Wish it was possible to have it without particles/fluids.

Regardless, it's definitely a cool use of the tech and I applaud Gearbox for making it happen.

Here's hoping for a mod that gives us more customizable physx settings (% particles, toggles for each category).

The other benefit of all this is that my game now runs at 60fps at all times. (i7 870, GTX 670)

Yeah, I would complain about it less if some of the PhysX features could be turned off (or set to disappear faster). I can't play any class with explosives while PhysX is on because that debris accumulates everywhere and makes the environment look stupid. And the "blood" looks like it's made of golf ball sized particles. However the cloth, goop, etc are all OK

Is there a way to skip the launcher for BPM?

Also, what framerate should I set the game at? I'm trying to see if I can get 60, but 60 cap doesn't seem to work.

Getting pretty good performance with my GTX480 and Phenom II 955. All on max it stays between 35-50 outdoors (some areas higher, some lower; worst area so far is the place where you first see the train). Interiors usually 50-60fps. Saying that I do actually have AO off and FXAA off. Might reduce PhysX to medium too. But generally okay. No weird glitches or crashes.

regretting buying the 360 version now that I see it runs ok on older hardware. Anyone as old as me on the CPU side? And if so how is the performance?

Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 3.2 ghz
GTX 460
8GB DDR2

Not strictly a performance question, but has anyone else noticed some weird texture flickering in the outdoors environments? The faces of the rocks/mountains will flicker briefly every now and then when I move through the environments (it seems to happen more frequently the faster I move, so it's most noticeable when driving). It doesn't happen when I stand still (even if I'm moving the camera around), and I haven't seen it happen on any other textures (such as anything on the ground). It also never happens indoors, in Sanctuary, etc. It's just outdoors, on those rocks.

One theory I have is that it happens as a higher LOD version of the texture is loaded, but that doesn't quite explain why it's only on those objects.

EDIT: I just played for another rather long session, during which I didn't see it happen a single time. I also don't remember seeing it happen before the session earlier today which prompted me to post about it. So maybe the game just temporarily glitched out a bit on me during that session.

Dennisssss tell me how to get that image quality on my GTX 680! No one else wants to tell me :-(

The screenshots are downsampled from 2560 x 1600 to 1680 x 1050 so I am kinda cheating there. But otherwise it is important not to have FXAA or any of the other blurry AA implementations turned on.

On a high pixel density monitor there is little aliasing.

I have enabled 4xMSAA and 4xSSGSAA in drivers - which are very old drivers by the way.

The negative LOD bias is set to -1.000

old drivers = easier to turn on those features? It's been very difficult for me to find a solid source of exactly what flags and such to use in NVIDIA Inspector to enable SSGSAA and MSAA in Borderlands 2, and I'm really confused about how to enable downsampling like that on NVIDIA too.

I'm well over recommended on everything but Graphics.

I have a GeForce GTX 460, so how good graphics will I be able to pump out of this beast?

I use old drivers because the new ones I tried would no longer allow me to use SSAA with Mass Effect 3. So I went back.

I should perhaps specify that by downsampling I mean the screenshots themselves later in Photoshop. I am not downsampling in real-time in addition to the already used SSGSAA.

But the IQ I am getting ingame is nearly the same.

Gotcha. So how are you enabling MSAA and SSGSAA in Borderlands 2?

I am using Nvidia Inspector.

I should perhaps also caution that 4xSSGSAA by itself knocks about 30 fps off my framerate......the price of great IQ......

Looking around multiple places I'm not finding a consistent set of flags to use - what are you using?

Anyone know of a way to reduce the thickness of the outlines? I don't want to remove them completely, I think that looks bad, but having them be a bit thinner would be nice. Downsampling from 2560x1440 achieves this look (like you can see in screens Dennis has posted), but the FPS jumps around way too much for me on my 670 with PhysX.

I mean that I can't get 60 fps. Tried all the other fps settings but didn't notice a difference. Seems the best I can get out of my setup is 30.

Yeah I tested the cap thing as well with vsync on. It won't go past 60 frames. Or is that the problem of having vsync being on?

How do I turn off the comic book outlines?

Didn't realise I forgot to post the link for downsampling.

Here it is, the fast way.

Okay so I have been complaining about getting random fps drops when looking at certain directions... can someone explain this to me?

49 fps. I am indoors, but looking toward that area my frames drop way below 60. This is with SLI GTX 580's on max settings. I really don't understand.

I can't say for sure but it might either be a bad coding of the level or thanks to all the fluids the PhysX calculation is off the charts :/ You could do a quick test and set PhysX to off. Also I myself don't own nVidia cards but I heard people saying that dedicating one card to PhysX is better for Borderlands 2 than SLI.

I have a GTX460 1GB and an i5-2500k@4GHz, and I get 40-60 fps at 1680x1050. I have AO turned off, draw distance at high (max is very high) and PhysX at medium; other than that I have everything maxed.

Holy shit. The entire bloodshot base is giving me FPS problems. Looking at certain areas it's locked at 60 fps, then looking at others will give me high 40s. It's really hard to be in combat when that happens. This makes NO sense.

I might have had a similar issue but I can't be certain. My FPS in indoor locations would occasionally drop from 60 to sub 30 when looking in certain directions. What fixed it every time was going into the options, changing view distance one notch down (in my case very high to high), and then the FPS went back to 60. After that I could change the view distance back to cery high with no drops.

Dear [Gearbox], I couldn't help but notice that during my trip through the [Bloodshot bandit base], my framerate was incredibly unwieldy.

4 players destroy Frame-rate even with a 690GTX (though SLI usage is very low). Oh well.

Also earlier someone posted a tool to give you harder enemies (4 player co-op enemies) solo. Anyone have the link?

Dammit GAF, shit is cray.

Borderlands is insanely good looking on PC.

What a port. Gearbox deserves the highest praise.

Wow, that just looks spectacular.

720p + FXAA (+ Steam screenshot compression...) isn't quite as breathtaking, and clearly a lot of detail is lost, but it still doesn't look bad to me:

Quite happy with the framerates I'm getting with the game looking like this on my pretty average laptop.
