People don't know what they want until they go back and try to justify it after the fact. What Paramount really needs to understand is where their marketing campaign fucked up (read: everywhere). and hopefully Suicide Squad's performance despite garbage reviews highlights that fact.

I'm truly baffled as to why they all but completely suspended marketing for five months - there was next to nothing in between the first trailer in December and the second in May. That surely didn't help.

I honestly forgot Star Trek until this week and thought it was me not paying attention, seems like there were nearly no promotion at all ?

Here's the real truth, the mainstream don't want old school Trek. They want Abrams pseudo Star Wars Trek. By making a film which felt like old Trek, they fucked over the audience who saw the last two.

And they only have themselves to blame. Franchise went from fast, characters on the run, flamboyant villain to "I... am... Cccccounting... on... eeeeet."

Like maybe the mainstream doesn't want to see an extended TOS episode stretched to feature length?

I'm pretty sure with a budget of 185M they aren't going to pour that much more for marketing. Star Trek's don't even make that much WW to do that.

That's my guess?

Star Trek cannot break 500M WW. This is the third try in 7 years and it just can't do it. If a 4th film is released the budget needs to drop more inline with BO results. DOM numbers are dropping which does not help the bottom line.

I don't think they knew how to market the movie. It's a feature length TOS episode with a larger budget, but they seemed to go in pretty hard on the "From the Director of Fast and Furious" angle.

Star Trek cannot break 500M WW.

With almost no competition in China, it actually might have a chance. We'll see next month when it comes out there.

I really enjoyed Star Trek. It is what Into Darkness should of been. I started to get misty eyed at the end there.

I really REALLY hope Star Trek Discovery is good. I dont want the franchise to go into the box for another 10+ years.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Beyond and had a lot of fun with it.

Aside from my nitpick of that one weird shot backwards from in front of the neck of the ship when they were leaving the starbase. ;) Which was even more strange since the shot of the Enterprise going into the starbase was fantastic.

Yeah. We need the upcoming series to be good and get this franchise back on the long TV format too where it's even more at home.
