Can it beat Shrek 2's fastest to 300 million and fastest to 400 million though?

Shrek 2 beat spider-man's record for 300 million by 4 days
Shrek 2 bodyslammed titanics record for 400 million by 23 days

Well, going by this chart,, it's certainly on pace to do just that.

Spider-Man 2 is a box office disappointment. You people are not seeing it enough!

IAWTP. But not to go see it again. As I believe there is a hero in all of us. That hero inside tells us to go see the movie one time.

Take a look at the percentages of box office take over budget with marketing and Dodgeball is bitchslapping Spiderman 2!

Hmm, maybe I'll go see Spidey 2 again. Pretty good flick. I'll buy a ticket for Dodgeball and then go into the Spiderman 2 theater. Yes. This is a good plan.

Why do we care about how well Spider-Man is doing? It's not going to top Shrek 2. Lets talk more about Shrek 2. Its success really came out of nowhere. People expected Spider-Man 2 to do better than it's doing. It's a failure. Shrek 2 is the success of the year.

Dreamfixx

I don't know shit about shit
How is Spider-man a failure? Yeah it cost $210 mil to make, but i'm sure it'll hit $300 before summer's end.

It's a failure in the sense that it's not doing as well as expected.

It's a failure? So far it looks like it's on track to beat the original spidy's $403 million mark. I dunno what you were expecting, but it's doing pretty damn awesome so far.

and?
shrek 2's success doesn't mean spidy 2 isn't a success. shrek 2 making money doesn't make the dollar value of spidy 2's gross any less.

And what do you mean exactly by "doing better"? On a day to day basis, Spidy 2's ahead of Shrek 2 right now. Of course, it'll largely depend on how the film holds up in the future, but you are talking like everything has already been settled.

Everything pretty much has been settled. Shrek 2 just passed Spider-Man's domestic gross and Shrek 2 will be at the theaters for a looong time still. Spider-Man 2 will be lucky to pass the original.

That's your opinion.

And again, Shrek 2 being a sucess doesn't make Spider-Man 2 a failure. Nobody expected Titanic to gross 600 million dollars. Does its success make every other film a failure? $400 million dollars in gross is still 400 million dollars. It's not like the value of 400 million dollars decreased to 40 bucks because some other film grossed 450 million dollars.

Compare spiderman 2 to shrek 2 when its been in the theatre for 2 months... right now you are comparing a film thats had 8 days to gross money to a film thats had almost 60

The key to shrek 2 though is that their 2nd weekend was a holiday. Spiderman 2 did good by having its opening weekend on a holiday weekend but no matter what the weekend your getting sales. The holiday though is guranteed big sales. So Shrek 2 opens to a huge opening. Then the weekend after during Memorial day it strikes huge again as does Day After Tomorrow gaining a completely unexpected 86 million. Memorial Day weekend is the perfect weekend being that unlike 4th of July you're not outside having bbq's and shooting fireworks. That in fact weakened spiderman 2's Sunday take but had it gain a huge Monday.

You cant say Spiderman 2 is on pace because no way will this upcoming weekend be as big as Shrek's 2nd or the Monday intake Shrek had. Another benefit of Memorial Day. Actual holiday is on a Monday and there's no traditions to the holiday.

You have to realize other than that 2nd weekend's Monday, Spider-man 1 and Shrek 2 were fairly equal and Spidey even took an advantage on a day to day pace. Overall the difference in the end over Spider-man 1 though should be about that one 25 million Memorial Day Monday when we get Shrek 2's final earnings. As far as Spider-man 2 it has the potential I think to land between Spiderman 1 and less than Shrek, good possibility a little less than Spider-man 1 also. Doubtful it beats Shrek 2's final earnings though

Spiderman 2 really doesn't deserve the box office it's getting. No movie that had me rolling my eyes so much while not dozing off from boredom should ever gross this much.

whose idea was it to create garfield the movie?
damn, i saw the trailer, such a shit movie

from what I hear it wasn't actually that bad, and it's been getting decent word of mouth and is going to easily surpass in ticket sales the other two competitors it had it's weekend debut (Stepford Wives and Chronicles of Riddick)...

I agree, it looked like crap in the trailer, but Ebert gave it a favorable review, and it's surpassed expectations at the box office, so it must not be THAT bad...

Spider-Man 2: 10,034,713 / 202,120,073
Shrek 2: 8,003,467 / 156,522,146

Also consider that Spider-Man 2 is MUCH longer than Shrek 2 and is in slightly fewer theaters, so there are less available showtimes. Spider-Man 2 is doing EXTREMELY well.

Slurpy

*drowns in jizz*
I saw it yesterday..

I dunno. Any scene with Doc Oc in them were fantastic. The action scenes were awesome.

I found most else to be just.. stupid. Movie just seemed very stilted, lines were ridiculous, and just character decisions/actions just seemed lame. Its like theyre missing too many brain cells. Some parts dragged for MUCH too long, and just seemed childish.

I guess the action scenes made up for that somewhat.. but it would have been nice if I didnt have to roll my eyes in a million scenes, and if the rest was actually stimulating. I just couldnt feel any attachment to the characters based on how stupidly they acted.

I'd be surprised if Spider-Man 2 beats Shrek 2. Though I haven't seen Shrek 2, the sheer fact that it's only like an hour and a half (from what people have told me), theaters can have a lot more showings of it than Spider-Man 2, which is over 2 hours.

It is doing well now. It won't be able to keep pace with Shrek 2 in the coming weeks.

But what basis do you have for saying that? So far, Spider-Man 2 hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, and it is being shown in MORE theaters this weekend than last. So far there is nothing to indicate that what you're claiming will come to pass. It's just too early to tell.

Spider-Man 1

For a movie that started in almost 400 fewer theaters than Shrek 2, Spider-Man 1's numbers held up extremely well to Shrek 2's. Shrek 2 as of Thursday has been out for 51 days, with a total of $414,066,842. On Spider-Man 1's 51st day, that movie had made a total of $389,010,631. That's for a movie that is 36 minutes longer than Shrek 2 and played in 548 fewer theaters on its first Friday.

Spider-Man 2, on the other hand, in its 9th day made $9M more than Spider-Man 1 did, and is ADDING theaters this weekend. Spider-Man 2 is on a faster pace than 1 was, is in more theaters, started on a Wednesday instead of a Friday like 1 did, and has less upcoming competition than Spider-Man 1 did. (AOTC opened after Spider-Man 1, for example). Because Spider-Man 2 opened on a holiday weekend in the middle of the summer, rather than during the school year like 1 did, that means more kids going in the middle of the day to see it.

I still think it's far too early to say whether Spider-Man 2 is going to exceed Shrek 2's total or not -- but like I said, there are no current signs that it's going to slow down and there's enough different from Spider-Man 1's release that it's not enough to assume the sequel's going to behave like the first movie did.

Yeah, you're right. It is still way too early. I guess I was just basing this on the fact that Shrek 2 far exceeded anyone's estimates and Spider-Man 2 is meeting or falling short of expectations. I liked both movies though.
