Boycotting MW2/Activision by buying it used.. anyone?

Hey guys.. so after Kotick's remarks, and the recent no dedicated servers for PC debacle, I have decided to say fuck you to IW/Activision by buying used. This will be a hard thing to do for me personally, because a lot of my XBL friends are going to bitchslap my ass for not buying it day one. If I can get it day one used, then hell yeah I will. Doesn't really matter if it costs me close to a new copy.

I know especially Eric WK is going to bitch to me about this but whatever.. Borderlands will do fine till I can get this second hand. I was hoping some more people would do the same and support the cause :).

Let it be known that I have nothing against the IW devs in particular, I mean they work hard on this game but yeah.. the publisher doesn't give a fuck about it's customers, and apparently neither does IW about the PC customers ( where the company has it's roots ).

Boycotting MW2 in any way should be death as penalty.

There's really no point in boycotting something this huge. Activision's still gonna sell 15 million+ copies, you're not hurting them much at all.

Yeah. I won't be buying it upon release. Definitely WAY after -- much like how I did with the first one. (Got it $9.00 - new from some guy.)

Besides, I have too much stuff to play already.

It's the principle of the matter.
I'll be picking it up used for the SP as planned

But I don't want to give Activision my money. So that's what's making a difference.

Plus that is pretty much the same mentality if someone says hey why are you a vegan it doesn't make a difference lol

Who gives a shit about the company behind a great game? Activision are jerks, but IW and the Modern Warfare IP are too good to be boycotted.

I'll be buying it used in any case. I admire Infinity Ward's work, don't get me wrong, but it just isn't the sort of game that gets me in an "omg day one" mood. They're super fun games that never really have anything all that remarkable about them, although COD4 is the best of its kind.

I know I'll get a decent couple of hours of fun out of it in the end. 'Big dumb shooters' have their place on my shelf.

You will go buy it as soon as you log on and see all your friends playing it and having fun without you. :lol

I'm just not buying it. No dedicated honestly make it worthless to me now. I'll buy Borderlands and rent MW2 for the single player.

I'm not much of a PC guy... Could you explain what that "no dedicated servers "means?

If you've played Team Fortress 2 on the PC or have heard of it, there is a large community base around "dedicated" or "hosted" servers that are owned by us the gamers or organizations that want to help promote community within the game.

They run custom maps, skins and other things that make the game a bit more personalized and fun. I've met a ton of great gamers through gaming on the same dedicated server while playing TF2.

IW is ditching this idea and making the match making just between the players and will share the hosting ala Halo 3. Shame.

These things are as useful as internet petitions but not having dedicated servers in any form is the most stupid thing I have heard lately in the world of videogames

Why is that a sigh? It's a real and very legitimate complaint. Something that threw me over the edge of buying this used instead of new even though I don't play pc anymore.

People keep saying these lines, but, I think, people boycotting it know this as well. That is all they can do and they might just do that. It may or may not be successful but it has to start somewhere.

Well... Yeah. Honestly though, considering how giant a pile of dickbags Activision are, I would love to make a pointless moral gesture that makes me feel better without doing anything useful (no sarcasm). Unfortunately the last and only Activision game I bought was VtM: Bloodlines, so I really can't not-do anything more than I'm already not doing.

That's more like it, all this buying it used nonsense is a fudge, as they'll get you in the end. Whether that's with some DLC some map packs or new game modes. :lol

I expect many of the 'boycotters' will fold once the advertising for the game kicks off properly.

I feel the same way, but won't be buying it at all. My interest wasn't high to begin with, and all I really care about is the SP campaign, but the recent PC-related news are reason enough for me to decide I won't play a second of the game.

I had my issues with CoD4 anyway, didn't dig the story one bit. The shooting was fun though, at least the way I did it (rush through the campaign).

Every pc shooter has dedicated servers. And console games SHOULD have them but they don't. They pretty much eliminate any lag and there is no host advantage. To not have it in a pc shooter kills the community because there is no server browsing, no way to play custom maps, forced pay DLC, host advantage, lagfests.

Dedicated servers give a better experience overall. They can have bigger player counts, less lag, can use mods, ban hackers more effectively, run 24/7 with no one being forced to stay in them, and also build up there own communities. You'll start running into a lot of people you get to know in the same servers.

They are also a big factor in Clans who use them a lot too.

It also gives you the option to pick what server you want to join with the number of players you want, the right map or the lowest ping. Where as matchmaking can dump you in a server half way a cross the world or put you in a game doing the same map for the 10th time in a row.

It's a program you run on your own machine, which is usually a rented server running Linux. All it does is serve the game. You can adjust game settings to your liking and stuff. People then play on your server by your rules.

What you gain is complete control over game modes, your own network properties, a place to gather for your clan / friends / admirers.

It's what sets multiplayer gaming on PC leaps and bounds apart from multiplayer gaming on console, especially in the shooter genre.

I'll be buying it used only because I'm not buying it Day 1, and GS is always trying to get you to buy used even if they have one used copy left. Normally I'd come up with an excuse like "it's a present, so it needs to be new", but I won't object to this. :lol

So you buy it used. You take the used copy off the shelf. The next person that comes in and was gonna buy used, can't. He's now forced to buy new. Activision still gets the sale. Buy or don't buy. But buying used isn't a boycott.

I'm also going to buy it used because I both was underwhelmed by the first (only played the first two missions and got bored but am going to try again next month) and am not a big fan of online multiplaying so makes no difference to me when I play.
Also even though I know this game is going to be a blockbuster ;as a consumer and future Games Developer I'd like to feel like I'm doing my part to give Kotick and Activision a slight chinese burn lol.

Edit: A an Englishman this is also a finger to Activision's raised RRP of both this and M:UA2!

Why not? I want to play the game. There is nothing wrong with the game, I just don't want to support the publisher.

Not at all, I'll buy it second hand from people on a forum I frequent, or Marktplaats. I'm not buying it in a store.

Nonsence. A lack of used copies pushes up the trade in value of the game, incentivising the trade in.
Plus if you're only getting it for the singleplayer then it's easy enough to just send it back once you're done.

I would boycott mw2 but BF:BC2 isn't out until next year, so I need something to play.

Borderlands, Tekken 6, Brutal Legend, Forza 3, L4D2, The Ballad of Gay Tony...

Those all come out around the same time, there should be at least something in there..

If I end up boycotting MW2 for 360 it's because I'm too fucking broke to get it on release day :lol Buy my shit in the trade thread, help a brotha out.

If you boycott, you must not play this game in any form at all, end of story. It makes me laugh when people were saying they were going to boycott Shadow Complex by donating money to a charity to offset their purchase of the game. There is no half way around it.

I will buy/rent it after all the Xmas backlog. It might be take age to finish before I can buy/start on MW2.

At least I know there won't be dead online much after day one.

It's the environmentalist way of boycotting. Consider it "bigot offsets." Al Gore would be proud.
