Boycotting MW2/Activision by buying it used.. anyone?

Permutated hit it right on the fucking head.

I've got a question: Why not just boycott it for six to nine months and buy it new and reduced then? Rather than, you know, putting money into the hands of the shops that end up fucking over everyone rather than just Activision? Just a thought.
Boycotters don't want to wait that long.

ITT: People display the same herd mentality that made Sony arrogant enough to charge 599 dollars for the
PS3.
NO I will not buy DLC and no this is not going to be GOTY its just a bland setpiece driven FPS with a good multiplayer (which I couldn't give a crap about!).

I asked the same question earlier on in the thread, but none of the 'boycotters' replied. So i'm going to take their silence to mean that they would be buying DLC with their 'used' copies.:lol
Why would I buy DLC for a game I don't play online ._. I'm either not playing this game, borrowing this game and playing through single player, or buying it used for around the price I can trade it in for (~$40) and trading it in.

Unified IW.net is kinda first step into that direction.
I look forward to the IW banana riders response to the inevitable subscription fee.

"that's less that 20 cents a match!"

they suddenly made the decision to fragment the official mw2 board into its respective platforms yesterday. can't possibly know why.

I'm feeling like just not buying MW2, got so many good games coming out or already playing anyways. Fuck them, the main reason I got the PC versions was because of the dedicated servers and all the cool mods/maps that kept coming keeping the games going.

Infinity Ward cares deeply about its customers. Research shows that PC gamers are older, thus find it more difficult to navigate the impenetrable waters of dedicated servers. They were constantly falling victim to scam artists and losing their pensions. Infinity Ward stepped up to the plate and built a service just for them! As an added bonus, it's free! for a limited time....

Also, we've heard your complaints PC gamers. Much like the online tube gaming systems that have had you so befuddled, our message boards were dense, confusing and full of children. As such, we've given you your own special area! For free!

(Now please go away, because we hate you. We want you to die. If we could, IW would euthanize PC gaming...good thing those old bastards can't hear our whispers, eh boys! If they complain blame piracy, press saps always fall for that canard)

The issue of no dedicate servers is a major one but my beef is with the lack(none at all) support for user created content. With total conversions and even custom maps adding life to many games in the PC community such as Desert Combat, Counter Strike, Red Orchestra and a shit ton of other titles. I feel that is a much bigger slap in the face for the PC community. You'd think a studio with members once from that community would be very understanding.

no dedicated servers, this is news to me. EPIC FAIL

I have been having an on going argument with a friend of mine who wanted me to buy the game. I have been saying that cod4 was unbalanced piece of shit and that the pc version was terrible

guess i will have the last laugh on this one

I think this latest bad move on the part of IW/Activision/Kotick is related to the following philosophy:

Kotick said, “You have studio heads who five years ago didn’t know the difference between a balance sheet and a bed sheet who are now arguing allocations in our CFO’s office pretty regularly. We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making videogames.” Kotick did this by creating an employee incentive program that “really rewards profit and nothing else.” He continued his dictatorial rant saying he wanted to instill “skepticism, pessimism, and fear” in his company as motivation for making games in the midst of a recession. “We are very good at keeping people focused on the deep depression.”

These words of fun sucking and fear mongering are what shareholders love to hear, but for us gamers, it’s unsettling to hear fear, pessimism and skepticism as motivators for producing games. For Kotick, making videogames isn’t about having fun. It’s about adding to his $15 million earnings.

Boycotting games because the mega corporation behind them are greedy assholes is so dumb. Newsflash: all games are backed by a greedy business that cares about nothing more than taking your money. The worst offenders are Sony and MS, yet I don't see any of you returning your 360s/PS3s. Activision is just doing whatever it takes to stay competitive in this increasingly crowded market.

Now, if you're boycotting MW2 because it's just another me too FPS, in a sub-genre that was played out way back when Counter-Strike: Source came out, then feel free. That's why I've never had any interest in these games in the first place. I'll rent it for the single player campaign and that's about it.

This latest piece of PR about the lack of dedicated servers is the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for many of us. Unfortunately, in regards to many of us, we are very much in the minority when it comes to knowing about any of this.
Wow, I just finished reading 1984 as well.

I'm not getting this in the short term, but only because I refuse to be held to ransom on the high UK RRP. I'll pick it up at some point though, without a doubt. IW have yet to let me down.

I love IW, but no one in their right mind would pay subscription fees for COD. It would destroy the franchise.

No game is good enough to pay subscription fees for, in my opinion.

Mandatory DLC? I've not read about this.

I'm part of the ignorant unwashed console masses when it comes to COD though. I was glad that COD4's DLC was so terrible that most of the user base that did download it deleted it from their HDDs, effectively removing the maps it from the play lists.

I'd think IW could do worse by forcing players to download DLC in order to play certain play lists. If you've ever played HALO 3 online, you'll know what I'm talking about -- almost all play lists now require up to 3 DLC packages. Otherwise, enjoy playing Social Skirmish
(IIRC) and that's it.

I'm not a huge Call of Duty fan, but I do respect Infinity Ward for their success and feel that they've earned it. I mean, the studio really got their start with the SiN Mission Pack "Wages of Sin" back in the late 90s. They struck gold with Medal of Honor Allied Assault in 2002 (which basically laid the foundation for the "scripted war shooter" genre). It's always nice to see a small group like this rise up and achieve great success.

So, in that sense, I don't feel bad supporting these guys. It's just a shame they are tied to Activision, which is the company most capable of bringing the game industry to another crash.

Had there been fewer delays this holiday, I would gladly have skipped out on MW2, but with the release list as it is and the use of the Best Buy deal that I took advantage of (B1G1 50% off), I'm going for it.

If Actinfison's treatment of another platform's userbase makes you want to show solidarity by not giving them your $60 that's your prerogative. I can understand that. Personally I'm not a big fan of what Activision is trying to do here (and elsewhere) either, no one should be, but until it affects me as a consumer the only action I'll take is to frown upon the shenanigans.

So that's why I'm not buying the 360 version new for a different reason. Getting the UK version at its new pricepoint is willingly screwing yourself over. The same goes for the PC crowd if you're still intending to purchase the game.

"It's worth 20% more."
You know what, maybe it is. But it's also worth 20% less, and I'd rather keep paying that. Why anyone would want to pay more for nothing is beyond me. And I hope no one's naive or nonchalant enough to think "it's just $10". If this strategy works to Activision's benefit they'll continue employing it wherever feasible. As will other publishers I'm sure.

Why does seemingly everyone equate buying used to buying used from Gamestop? It's so bizarre.

Sorry, if you buy the product knowing what you're getting, you have no right to be pissed and/or complain. Your buying it knowing full well what you're getting means you're ok with it.

Well I guess I should say a purchase tells the developer/publisher that you're ok with it. Your money to them tells them you have no problem with it. They have your money.

MWN 2 will probably be an awesome game. However, this also pisses me off. It feels like a console port to the PC, and I hate console shooters. In my mindset, it would be like playing a console shooter with keyboard and mouse. Luckily there are many games to catch up with, and there are many shooters like MWN 2 already out there. I can wait until the game actually becomes what I expect out of a PC shooter. Or not buy the game at all.

This is exactly what they're hoping for from PC gamers. That "they'll probably buy it anyway" mentality.

Well yeah. I don't have the need to buy it on PS3. I rather have it on the PC. Buy it to play it? Sure. I guess.

Activision hasn't had a single thing worthy of purchasing in years for me. The GH, TH and CoD series is all they really offer. Their recent MUA was horrid and Prototype was a letdown, so this is nothing new of them not getting my money.

I'm still pushing for Brutal Legend sales too so Tim can rub it in Act. face! :D

Apathy is even more futile. And I'll still be playing the game gosh darn it. Just that I'll acquire it from some internet person instead of some internet store.

Perhaps I misread it. I thought you were saying that you would have bought the PC version, but you are a man of principle. If you had a 360 you would have opted for that version, but you don't have a 360. So I thought your were saying you were SOL, even though the PS3 option exists.

I owned COD4 for PC and 360. It already felt like a console port if you ask me. I understand the outrage, but IW didn't seem huge on the PC even then. They released the map pack late, they dragged their feet on releasing the tools, interface. I'm going console this time.

The game felt too fast and too lethal on PC. With 32 man matches, every server being hardcore, the precision of mouse aim...it was basically quake or unreal. Perhaps they are doing this to conserve the experience of a console game ported to PC. An option would have been better for all parties involved.

This is a very good point. FPS games designed for a console first, PC second are never as good as games designed with PC in mind first.

Hey guys.. so after Kotick's remarks, and the recent no dedicated servers for PC debacle, I have decided to say fuck you to IW/Activision by buying used. This will be a hard thing to do for me personally, because a lot of my XBL friends are going to bitchslap my ass for not buying it day one. If I can get it day one used, then hell yeah I will. Doesn't really matter if it costs me close to a new copy.

I know especially Eric WK is going to bitch to me about this but whatever.. Borderlands will do fine till I can get this second hand. I was hoping some more people would do the same and support the cause :).

Let it be known that I have nothing against the IW devs in particular, I mean they work hard on this game but yeah.. the publisher doesn't give a fuck about it's customers, and apparently neither does IW about the PC customers ( where the company has it's roots ).
