Personally, I think of it in terms of a CCG. Which items/effects do I need? How do they impact turn to turn gameplay? Then I try to go from there.
I could theory craft a lot of different things too, but since I don't have the vast majority of better units, it is just too far out there to worry about. So really it comes down to gem collection and seeing if the machine spirit likes me on any given day.
