Bravely Default |OT| For the Americas

I just hit chapter 5; is there a good place to grind up some job points?

North of Florem in the garden (you do a sub-scenario there.) Go save at the trader, and run around (don't wander into the poison flower).

You need a Dark Knight with Black Bane (30% of HP to deal group dark damage) and the Vampire support ability Self-Restore (restore all HP after a battle). Equip your best weapon (preferably with Two-Handed) and max out your P. Atk with equipment. You may need a speed-boosting accessory to outspeed all enemies.

Start fight, brave 3 times and use Black Bane. If you're strong enough you will rip through enemies in one turn. Self-Restore will restore your HP so just set Auto and have fun. If you get 6x Rafflesia and a Growth Egg (500k pg accessory from the Trader that doubles JP) you can hit 999 JP (Rafflesia are also Dark-weak). If you don't have the pg, a Freelancer support ability will give you 1.2x the JP (for that character).

If you don't have the levels, Firada/ga spam works as well on most enemies (except against Rukh who are Wind-weak). You'll need to restore MP though.

The counters to this are first strike; equip the accessories that reduce the odds/increase your odds of first strike.

Thanks! I don't have the vampire class yet so I'll have to go with the second option.

Argh! Cerberus has to be the most annoying random encounter enemy I've ever come across in a JRPG. It doesn't help that my current party setup isn't very magic offensive. I've got Agnes who's been my healer as a Black Mage right now, but even at Job Level 9, she's doing piss poor damage.

But seriously fuck those fucking canines, argh!

Yeah, you pretty much have to identify techniques that take them out in one hit. There's a few options you could plausibly have at the point you're at, but it's really hard to deal with them if you don't have one.

Just remember that counters don't occur with AoE damage of any kind.

AoE? In the position I'm in, I think my most viable option is stocking up on Arctic Winds, it just sucks they're so expensive.

Your best option is actually to turn off the encounters/Auto-Run, it's not worth your time trying to fight them unless you need their Genome ability/entry in the Encyclopedia. You can always fight other enemies if you need the EXP/JP/PG.

Yep, that's what I did. There are better places to grind if needed.

Officially beat the game yesterday. I say "officially" because I lost at the last part of the final fight, read the ending, and then grinded to 99 before trying it again. Clocked in at just under 60 hours with about half the jobs maxed, Norende complete, and most Genome abilities. Did the bonus dungeon too
but couldn't beat the Adventurer since I did not kill them both on the same turn. Comrade summoned him again with even more HP so I gave up.

As the first jRPG I've played in a long time (last one was Golden Sun) it was great. The voice acting was solid, the music was probably the best part of the game, and the dialogue/story was pretty good for the first few chapters. The second half was frustrating (Mrgrgr) and while they did try to change it up somewhat I was still traversing the same areas and fighting the same enemies. Shortening it would've helped.

Looking forward to Bravely Second.

Just got to chapter 6.
I knew something like this was coming, but twice? They could have easily pulled off the twist without forcing us to do all that stuff again.

If you aren't doing all the sidequests it doesn't take very long. None worth doing in Chapter 5, and only one in Chapter 6 though it's longer than most.

Then after that they get awesome.

Which one? Skipping the other sidequests means I'll miss the other
Gerome abilities
, right?

You got a whole two chapters of fun coming up.
Great, despite
the repetitions
I'm liking the twist.

You can't miss genome abilities. You can get a bunch in Chapter 4 if you unlock Vampire that early; you can get all the others in Chapter 5 and onwards; any that you could have learned in Ch. 4 can still be gotten from encounters in the secret dungeon.

Beaten, true ending.

And I thought that repeating the bosses twice was too much :lol
I tried to do every sidequest in the chapters 5-8, until I found out
there's even a second round of boss rematches in chapter 8, filled with dialogues and without a break
. Nope. Sorry.

The final boss theme was the icing on the cake of a beautiful soundtrack. Too bad for the flaws of the second half, the rest of the game was outstanding, I enjoyed the class system a lot. I'm looking forward to Bravely Second, already in love with the Ba'al battle theme.

Just got to Chapter 6. Things are getting interesting.
Cant believe I have to fight all those Dragons again (well not have to, but if I want into Vampire Castle and get the blue chest)

I just had Agnes master Black Mage, but after fighting
De Rosso
in Chapter 5, I can't really see her get any better than a Spiritualist with White Magic, maybe Summon Magic since Tiz is still rocking the Item Lore with Medication.

Game over.

People warn you about how bad post chapter four is but wow was that terrible.

Quite fortunate there was a viable cheese method to beat the final bosses or I wouldn't have bothered.

So much potential wasted. I hope the sequel can fix the issues next time around.

I find that offensive magic really falls off late-game. It's good in the early parts when you can exploit type weaknesses, but other jobs output way more damage against the final bosses.

The concert music is pretty great. Can't understand the vocalized versions but they're interesting.

well, offensive magic is more than good enough in the main game, so whatever

I don't think you have to fight those dragons again.

You don't have to.

Oh okay, I guess I just assumed that when I walked by those pillars and noticed I could examine then you had to fight them all over again. Good to know.

Question about Vampire Castle though:

I never got to it in Chapter 4, but in Chapter 5, DeRosso hints that Airy is the one to blame for everything and this is supported by the fact that in Chapter 5's Light Pillar, Alternis ALSO says Airy is the one to blame. This just makes me wonder, I know a lot of the dialog in the Side Quest battles is recycled but are there any significant changes in dialog in Chapter 4? Or does he hint at Airy being the cause there as well?

As far as I remember, there isn't much that changes. Memory is cloudy.

endgame spoilers:

I thought the "Airy lies" title thing was supposed to show up once you reached chapter 6, but apparently for me it didn't?

In terms of what? The Vampire skills are the absolute best damage dealers in the game for post-game content. Fireball is incredible.

I finally started playing this game!
I'd appreciate if anyone else who's starting the game would add me:

If I understood correctly, the town construction mini game goes by faster with more friend codes?

I was mostly referring to Arcanist/Black Mage, or maybe that's just my build. Most bosses are immune/highly resistant to poison/sleep so most of the Arcanist skills are useless, and even with Max BM I don't do much damage with Black Magic. Maybe the -ja skills are better.

more endgame stuff:

so I went to Chapter 7 and immediately broke the first crystal, I got a little scene where the party calls out Airy before she transforms

so why the fuck is this scene not in the true ending

That's odd. Most of the (asterisk) bosses are quite susceptible to poison and sleep, with only a few who are immune.

There is also the Status Ailment Amp ability, which improves the chances for sleep/poison/etc to take.

I have no idea of the actual success chances of status ailments spells on bosses, but I would guess maybe 33% without Status Ailment Amp, and 66% with it? I definitely wouldn't call it highly resistant.

Guys, help me beat this game, I'm stuck. I'm at Eternia in chapter 4. My characters suck, they get trashed pretty quickly into battle. Here's the level/class breakdown:

All characters are level 58.

Tiz is a level 12 Pirate
Agnes is a level 10 Salve-Maker
Edea is a level 10 Swordmaster
Ringabel is a level 13 Ranger

I'm willing to grind as much as necessary. Who sucks? What should I be doing different or paying attention to? Help is appreciated. I really want to finish this game.

level 58? that's higher than I was

if I were you I'd opt to tank (Swordmasters are good for this, might want to use Ninja subclass?) through chapter 4, cause the remaining bosses (assuming you've cleared Victor/Victoria) are against single opponents

if you haven't cleared that one, reflect is your friend

Partially true in a way. You get 3 new "workers" every day by wifi + whoever you streetpass and who you are friends with on your 3DS.

But I added you, should show up. If not: 0533-6000-5159, Exequim. I never know which actually gets xferred over.

I'm thinking my classes are to blame. I've been focusing on variety and exploring different ones so I have ended up with a bad build. For example, I have no idea how to use a Salve Maker :lol

Salve Maker is the best healing/support job in the game (IMO). Of course if you don't use it correctly it's not going to do any good.

What other jobs do you have on each character?

And do you have a blessed shield from Norende. It is a Salve Maker's best friend.

I posted my job build above. Pirate, Salve-Maker, Swordmaster and Ranger.

What are sub-jobs and abilities?

Your character isn't only a swordmaster or pirate. You pick a job and a sub-job.

IE: Swordmaster/Ninja
Salve-Maker/Performer
Dark Knight/Monk
Ranger/Thief

Set up abilities too, like +20% physical attack or gain 1BP when you evade physical attacks, etc.

So, I'm going to the final dungeon in the last chapter

My chars are all level 75, not all jobs are mastered, Am I screwed am I not? :(

The party I normally use is something like:

Angnes: Spiritmaster/White Mage(both mastered)
Tiz: Templar/Pirate(both mastered)
Ringabel: Thief/Spellfencer(the last one isn't mastered)
Edea: DarkKnight/Spellfencer(both mastered)

So, any particular fun combination for the last boss? I mean, I really like the game, but I just want to finish already(heck, I'm considering lowering the difficulty to easy) I'm pretty sure that if the boss one shots me I will stop playing for like a month or more. Any builds that you like for the final boss?
