Jeez ... on CNN.com ... apparently a high fever and it's worsening. What does the Vatican do if he dies in position?

Hardly "Breaking" news this guy has been at deaths door for years now. I'm pretty sure they control him like a Puppet.

As in, he is still in the position of Pope.
I see. But didn't every previous Pope die as Pope. I think the Cardinal's vote on which one of them will move up after death. I'm not Catholic though so I could be completely wrong.

The popes tend to die on the job, so to speak.

Anyway, when a pope dies another one popes up.(Best read in a Glaswegian accent)

This begs for Photoshop:

And it wouldn't be a Pope thread without:

After the Pope passes, a conclave is held at the Vatican in which the College of Cardinals elects one of their own (usually) to become the new Pope, by a 2/3 majority. Popes can resign if they so choose, but most serve until death.

I'm pretty sure that Popes can resign if they want. But I don't think most of them want to.

Spike beat me to it. :(

FYI...

He has now been given last rites by the church

Oh shit, this could be it. I though it would at least be another few weeks, this is rather quick.

Far too many deaths this week....

If he dies today/tomorrow, I guess many people will assume the news to be a tasteless April Fool's joke...

He's already been given his last rights by the Church. I'd imagine the Church has already been getting a list of possible replacements ready.

Don't know how this breaking news... The Pope has looked like he was about to drop dead any second for the last 5 years. I swear he is really a robot or something. That is the only thing that can explain him still being alive.

Edit: This thread reminded me of the Mr. Show popemobile skit. I laughed.

Well he wouldn't be the first person to exist after death. I mean Ted Turner's just a hologram.

Seriously though, anyone have any links to more on what this Pope has done?

No disprect intended... but are there any Catholics on this forum who acknowledge the Pope as something/someone... special?

I've never really understood that part of the Catholic religion...

He's the head of the Catholic church. The highest office one can attain within the Church. It's no different than a President or King, basically.

What don't you understand about his position? He's meant to represent the apostle Peter's position.

The status and authority of the Pope in the Catholic Church was dogmatically defined by the First Vatican Council in its Dogmatic Constitution of the Church of Christ (July 18, 1870). The first chapter of this document is entitled "On the institution of the apostolic primacy in blessed Peter", and states that (s.1) "according to the Gospel evidence, a primacy of jurisdiction over the whole church of God was immediately and directly promised to the blessed apostle Peter and conferred on him by Christ the lord" and that (s.6) "if anyone says that blessed Peter the apostle was not appointed by Christ the lord as prince of all the apostles and visible head of the whole church militant; or that it was a primacy of honour only and not one of true and proper jurisdiction that he directly and immediately received from our lord Jesus Christ Himself: let him be anathema."

And he's most likely going to be replaced with a more conservative Pope.

Peachy.

The guy is 84... I can't say I won't miss seeing his photos as Pope but at 84 no one needs to be sad about it :)

plays "POPE" py PRINCE on iTunes in his honor :)

Aside from being head of the Catholic Church, what has he done though? I mean, for lack of a better question, is this a good guy?

Well, he's the person that heads the church and approves changes to their methodologies. Due to this, his influence is immense throughout the world, and thus world leaders are very mindful of his position on a multitude of issues.

As for whether he's a good guy or not, well, his intention, as well as the intention of the catholic church is to do good. How that translates to your point of view might vary, as some people might see him do things they don't consider good (church condemning abortion/contraception/homosexuality.)

Among other things, he's been very progressive in terms of establishing interfaith dialogue/acceptance, has softened the church's official stance on evolution, and has used his station to coax governments into giving many millions of dollars in humanitarian aid over the years.

The biggest blemish on his record is, imo, the child abuse scandal which has really come to light in the previous half decade or so (though it's been going on for decades, apparently). It's a shame he wasn't more aggressive in dealing with the situation.
