Trump comparisons are completely valid. You have a bunch of 1 foot in the grave types longing for the good old days of the British Empire when England kept its foot on the throat of all those pesky brown people.

You have polls showing large numbers of support for leave come from people who did not even finish school etc.,

Leave Campaign is 100% the typical Racist Republican style campaign of the US

All of you americans need to stop pretending you understand British politics. Every american in here is just projecting domestic american politics on to the UK.

Kind of shocked to be honest. Thought it was a certainty the UK would stay in the EU. I wonder what the biggest factor was for pushing people away?

Nationalism touches at the very heart of human tribalism especially for a former superpower that controlled the world. They tapped into that sentiment of Brits feeling demoralized, trampled on by a 'foreign' other.

I'm curious, can you explain why you voted Leave?

I voted to leave because I believe it is inevitable that the UK will leave the EU. The UK should never have joined the EU we are a completely different mindset to our European counterparts. There would have come a crunch point in the future when the UK would have had to commit fully to being in the EU (euro and all that crap) or GTFO.

My reason for voting to leave now rather than later is that I believe leaving now is the UK's best chance to survive outside a United States of Europe. It is going to fucking hurt bad now, there is going to be a lot of pain now. But it will be nothing compared to the pain we would suffer if we stayed in for another 15-20 years and then left.

Plus there is a nice lil bonus that it was a big "fuck you" to Cameron. But that didn't factor into my decision it is just a nice lil perk.

How do we, the USA, feel about this? Does it even effect us in any way?

Well, USA and UK are like best buddies... so it kinda sucks that our best friend is leaving the EU, which means we lose our best way of getting favorable negotiations with the EU, which is a massive economic and geopolitical bloc.

Same. FIgured it'd be kind of close but would be like the Scottish referendum a year or two ago, a lot of bluster but then a fairly safe "Nah let's chill" vote.

Thank you!!! The panic here is ridiculous.

Singapore, Norway Switzerland and many other countries are not in the EU and have some of the best living standards.

Norway and Switzerland adhere to the principles of free movement and other EU regulations to gain access to the EU single market though.

One thing I've been a bit confused about – could Wales or Ireland leave while the rest of Britain remains? Or is it a winner-take-all situation?

I say this as a Remain guy but judging by my family it was simple patriotism. They want their country back.

Shrug, it may not be a logical motivation but is not a racist one either. Just simple love of country.

Our best way to get favorable terms with the EU is by being the United States of America.

Britain didn't do shit for us in terms of getting favorable terms with the EU.

See, there's a slight problem with telling people in perpetual economic insecurity that they'll face perpetual economic insecurity by voting for Brexit.

"Hey. You poor people in your run down working class towns, with your vanishing industries and living hand-to-mouth whilst under the threat of higher rates of job insecurity.
Yes, you.
Don't vote leave because it might cause financial insecurity which could badly damage the price of your stocks and shares."

I simply cant understand how this wasn't an appealing message.
