I just sold my girlfriends iPad on eBay. For £40 less than you get it from Apple. This doesn't include postage. How does this happen?

The Apple effect. I got buyer's remorse on my iPad 2 last year and sold it for a hundie more than retail. Got a great price for me old iPhone 4 too, pretty much paid for the 5!

Yeah, now you'll be able to sell second hand Macbooks and iMacs with the note "Bonus CD Drive included!"

Speaking of those, I realised the other night I've only used my laptop's disc drive about 3 times in the last two years, so I'm going to pull it out and stick another ssd in there for a dual boot system. Win 8 intrigues me.

My gaming PC doesn't even have an optical drive. Woof.

(It does mean that I have to rip stuff for iTunes on the missus' laptop though).

My physical media consumption has pretty much flatlined since subscribing to Spotify and Netflix, and whatever they don't have I can find on other services. I get a Blu-Ray once in a Blu moon!

The interview lasted 2 and a half hours, including 30 minutes for writing a demo press release. Spoke to the directors of marketing and product planning. I should get an email in the next few days and I'm hopeful that I did enough.

Anyone remember this?

"The next few days" lol. I finally got an email today - 27 days later - but hey, I got the job.

Well it's still nice to have options. Also physical CDs are still cheaper and "flawless".

Oh and congrats industrian!

haha, they sure took their sweet time to get back to you. Congrats man!

Call me old fashioned but I can't have a PC or laptop without a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drive. I just love the convenience of watching dvds on my laptop when I'm travelling. Actually, are blu-ray drives cheap now? I could do with one for the media/gaming PC at home.

EDIT: Note to self, never go into the "Pics that make you laugh thread" at work. Shit, I'm going to get fired one of these days.

Congrats on the job!

Thanks. :)

I've no idea when I should be expected to start (due to processing time for my work permit and visa) and there's a good chance that if I start work in January I escape a temporary 20% tax rate and go straight to 5%.

(Foreigners who get a job after July in Taiwan get lumped with a 20% tax rate for 6 months, then it drops to the normal 5% rate.)

If I still lived in the UK then I'd still be buying physical items instead of digital. A 512K connection does that.

But in Asia, lugging around a folder with 200+ discs in it gets kinda old.

I've still to buy digital music though. That's where I draw the line. Buy the CD, rip it to a high quality MP3, put CD on the shelf. I like having a collection.

Congrats on the job!

you guys got a good point actually. I forgot that I got harassed by customs at a non-western airport for carrying 20+ DVDs. I could've carried triple the amount of films on one USB stick and not get quizzed for trying to smuggle porno into the country.

EDIT: well that didn't sound right. To clarify, carrying 20+ normal/hollywood/UK films and then get accused for smuggling porno at customs.

It's strange, I feel media on optical discs are slowly being phased out like VHS even though dvd players are still widely available and blu-rays are still a new format. Although I've gone digital for music, I still buy an album on CD every now and then if it's a great album. I just like owning something I can hold in my hands...I think I'm a hoarder.

You brought back a memory of last year. I was returning to Taiwan from the UK, carrying the aforementioned disc folder with 200+ discs in it. I had to make a transfer in Xiamen, China, and I was asked at least 5 times to see the discs.

I caught on the 3rd time that they might think they're fake, and the idea of having them confiscated was pretty brutal (all my PSX, PS2 & PC games. All my Blu-rays, etc). But I managed to keep them all. On the 5th time I realised that most of the customs guys were young and just curious about what games I had. The last guy saw GTA: SA and said "I played that. Good game!" and sent me on my way.

Something has to be really special if I want the extra quality of a disc, like say Blade Runner on Blu-Ray or a classic album (though Spotify can do 320kps streaming/offline playlists now so it's less important).

Congrats industrian!

I'm half and half right now. I still buy the big films on blu ray and 3D, but mainly watch new films through netflix or download them. Most music is digital but I did buy a cd the other day. The only thing I refuse to go digital on is books and comics.

Congratulations chap!
Congratulations on the job Industrian!
Congrats! That is more than a few days to sweat it out, haha. You got the job though! Great news.
Wheeeey well in Industrian.

Thanks. :)

Now I just have to wait another few days for them to prepare a contract and have the CEO authorise everything. But after 27 days I've developed a bit of patience. :p

bitch I'm taking calls.
Blade Runner was infinitely disappointing to me. But I'm pretty sure I saw the "wrong" version and I had just finished reading the amazing book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" that it was based on so perhaps it was also a case of impossible expectations.

Weston-super-Mare.

Just off the seafront - head inland from the pier and we are second road on the right (actually the first road is a crappy little road so you might miss it - just take a right at Barclay's bank and we are about 50 yards down).

Right, my plan is this. Drive down to my brother's in Cornwall very early morning Saturday 22nd December. I'll probably get to the M5 junction of the M4 about 7am, so a bit too early to pop in then.

On Sunday drive back up to my Mum's in Wales. Will be hoping to get to Weston-super-Mare about 2-3pm, perfect time for a cuppa? Is there anywhere to park by your shop?

I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep for my Specialist Study in Higher English back in 2001. Near-constantly writing the title of the book helped a lot in getting to the minimum 2500 word limit. ;)

But yeah, it's a great book. I'd like to see a more faithful adaption eventually (with the Mercer subplot intact) but Blade Runner is good enough for now. And yeah, unless you're watching the Director's Cut or Final Cut then you're not getting the best version.

I bought the 25th Anniversary Briefcase-Edition of the Blade Runner Blu-ray back in 2007. One of my favourite movies ever. Awesome soundtrack too.

Get the Director's cut Blu-ray. It's brilliant.

I read the book after watching the film, and I gotta say I actually preferred the film.

Always meant to read more Philip K. Dick to see how they compare to the films. Oh, and I only found out the other day that the K stands for Kindred, and he has the same birthday as me.

Nice cheek on your essay haha. And yeah I'll check out the Final Cut eventually. The soundtrack is lovely and I listened to it all the way through a re-read of the book. I firmly believe Vangelis Memories of Green perfectly captures the essence of what Philip K Dick was writing about.

DO IT. A Scanner Darkly is great. I actually do hold the film adaptation for that one on the same footing as well too.

Plenty. There's three multistoreys within about 100 yards, but on-street parking should be fine on Sundays - not right outside the shop (that's disabled spaces) but on the street.

If using Satnav, do NOT use the shop's postcode (no satnavs seem to understand the complicated driving restrictions round here, and I keep losing delivery drivers!) Use BS23 1ST instead, which is the other end of the road and you'll (a) stay legal and (b) end up by a nice Japanese restaurant.

Directions: M5 J22 is easiest coming North, follow signs to Weston and you'll come out on the seafront. Follow the road along. Just after the Grand Atlantic Hotel (big spiky Victorian thing) you come onto a little one-way system - stick in the middle lane and take a right into the town (past big Premier Inn on the corner). This is Carlton Street, there's a multistory on the right if you want it. Otherwise take a left past all the demolition works then left onto Oxford Street, straight over the traffic lights and next right. That is St James Street, there's parking all down the left-hand side, and also on the next street on your left. They've just put meters in, but they don't apply on Sundays.

We're up at the Marks & Spencers end, directly opposite the White Lion.

(EDIT: Don't use Google Earth either - whole area's been remodelled since then and half the roads have been pedestrianised).

I don't have a satnav so I'll be writing your directions down!

From an interview with American actress Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life) in GQ magazine:

Jessica Chastain said:
I was working in Thailand and I’d be walking down the street and people – British people – would stop the car and scream, ‘ginger!’ at me

A while back, I asked for some Uni advice...

Well I finally got my first offer (from Exeter - AAA)

In the end, I applied for History at,

Durham
Bristol
Exeter
Leeds
Birmingham

Thanks for the help Brit-GAF! Tis' appreciated :)

My personal bias that is based on very little is Leeds is the nicest city and Durham is the best uni.

You're right about Durham (I'd say L1NETT's post is in descending order actually), but I can't say I've been to half of those cities so can't judge the Leeds part.

Exeter's good for History though, so well done, L1NETT!

The apostrophe goes on the other side of "'tis"! I'm not sure you're university material.
