Random question over vague curiosity. How's everyone work-wise for Christmas? Decent break or workload building up before time off?

I'm down to work the 24th-28th, 12 hour shifts... Fortunately i managed to blag an holiday in for the 25th, but most are having to work it!

And congrats f0rk!

Working Christmas Eve. Only have Christmas Day and Boxing Day off. I have five days of holiday spare to use as I please, though, so will likely take time off of my own choosing.

Will have plenty fun on Christmas Eve though. Will bring alcohol and boombox and just lazily do paperwork in a near-empty office.

14th Dec to 10th Jan but will be working from home from the 3rd Jan. Had a few extra holidays that I was forced to take before the new year so I thought I'd take them before xmas.

Question to England gaf, Is it me or are all your towns/villages as religion-centric as Christchurch? kicking it there today and the place is covered with crosses and Bible quotes as well as St. George flags. Maybe its just here (large senior citizen residents) but I don't see that a lot in Scotland towns and villages. Cameron's Britain?

I figure my Christmas Day shift will be quiet as fuck. Afterall it's not as if they'll be demanding massive results on my 2nd day. Hell, one of the most weird feelings I get in a new job is not knowing what time is acceptable to go home on your first few days - considering that you're assigned no work at all outside of learning company procedures.

That and young Taiwanese people care more about Christmas than I do. I expect it to be a big meet and greet. I better buy some shortbread so I don't end up going full-Scrooge.

You need to travel to Korea. It'll blow your mind.

Got the job!!!!! They made me sweat it out but really happy, big weight off my shoulders.

Congratulations, chap. Drinks/dinner/cocaine party on you in the near future?

We usually have a huge workload leading up to Christmas because the IT departments of a lot of our customers like to get all kinds of kit in to install over the Christmas break, while there aren't any users to get in the way of server upgrades etc so we're shipping out kit left right and centre at the minute.

Got a half-day on Xmas eve then I'm off until January 3rd - planning to rewatch The Hobbit (this time in 3DHFR), play some games and relax to the max.

Then it's gonna be fucking crazy again through January, when all those IT departments' users try to log on and use their systems again and the IT guys realize they've fucked critical things up & need more kit/replacement kit on-site IMMEDIATELY!!!

Fun fun :)

Funny you mention that, I was looking at roundtrip tickets to Asia today. Job screwed me over for a payrise and bonus this year so I was re-calculating on how much I can save up for going to Japan next Sept.

By Korea you mean Worst Korea right? I thought Buddhism was bigger than Christianity there. That's surprising. Would be interesting to see what it's like in North Korea though. you think its easy to get a tourist visa?
I bet you can get a good laugh out of it.

It's you, I think. Then again, though I live in a village, I don't travel to other villages very often. Suppose it's not very surprising from a place called "Christchurch".

You're not hopeless or alone by any means. I'm trying myself to get back on the education horse after a break working full time. Dropped out in the middle of my general uni courses about a year ago (22 now).

Silver lining is if I at least finish my undergrad there is a position I can go for at a reputable company so that's my goal at the moment. Gonna restart with three courses next semester and see how it goes.
I just need to keep my eye on the prize this time. I got my first paycheck and thought "who needs school!" I mean, how fucking stupid could I be.
Being 21 is hardly setting your future in stone. Our resident sheep just completely changed his future and opened a bead shop, and he's much farther along the chain of life than you. There is no "life is over" age other than that which you make.

Go forth, my son, and be the Salvadora you wish to be.
Thanks for the advice, Suairyu. There was a moment at work when I turned around and noticed that I was surrounded by people about 20 or 30 years older than me doing the same dead end job. It was then I really realized that I needed to get doing something worthwhile with my life or that could be my fate.

Suppose you guys are right. Still a lovely little place and I just got back from seeing Silver Linings Playbook with a friend so it was an alright day :) Dat English accent never gets old.

The Hobbit was excellent, chaps.

Best LOTR film.

48fps is a gamechanger for 3D. Fantastic. Takes two or three minutes for the eyes to adjust though.

I feel like the fat guy from Fresh Meat at the moment: people expect me to be interested in The Hobbit but I'm really fucking not. Maybe it's because I actually read the book for this one. Maybe it's the 3 films thing which still looks really cynical regardless of whether they pull it off.

Maybe I'm just not in the mood for fantasy, or at least fantasy that doesn't involve Peter Dinklage.

Wos appertainin' Gaf?

So I had a lovely birthday weekend, rounded off by making more Xmas tree cupcakes for work, which are going down a treat. Also very surprised to get a gift from everyone, a Galactic Empire bath robe! Nice to know everyone is aware of what I like :)

So, busy week for me in work. Was off yesterday, work xmas lunch tomorrow so that'll be a half day, then a half day on Friday. Doesn't leave a lot of time to get stuff done.

Luckily I managed to get Xmas eve off, but I'm back in on 27th. So driving to Cornwall Saturday, driving to Wales (via phisheep's) on Sunday, then driving back to London Wednesday. Fun times.

Entertaining young ladies hmmm? phisheep you rum bugger you.

I won an easy £20 from someone who bet the same thing.

It's relatively easy to go on an government-assisted tour of the North and I was tempted to do so. But I do not want to financially endorse this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_North_Korea

I always imagine Best Korea as being a little like the camps from The Men Behind the Sun, (which makes Threads look like A Christmas Carol, mainly cos it's a true story).

Hey BritGAF I need help, I want to order a Braun shaver off Amazon UK but they don't ship them to mainland Europe. What I was planning on doing was to pay you the money through paypal, you order the item, item comes to your house, I pay the shipping costs and you send it to me.

Those shavers are €250 here. :(

I'd be willing to do this if you like, though it won't get here until after xmas probably.
How would you want me to ship it, and what country are you in? I can ship with TNT for not too much money, or just Royal Mail it.

Oh yeah, fuck that noise. Would feel awkward staying at a decent hotel knowing that the rest of the population in the country were staying in shitholes and being deprived from the necessities.

From what I've heard, those who live in big cities like Pyongyang have a lifestyle equivalent to a typical city in the west, but they're called "show cities" for a reason. In the hotels in Pyongyang you can easily get Heineken, Budweiser, etc.

I really want to visit Pyongyang just to experience what can only be considered an "anomalous" world city. A capital city with minimal western influence combined with a Stalinist personality cult straight outta 1947.

But I refuse to endorse the status quo with my money.

Picked up the wrong phone last night in the casino, got no Sim card or anything so can't contact who it belongs to to see if they've got mine. Time to take it back and hope they're as honourable :(

Checking it out right now. I love a juicy leak, Popping E i don't give an F i'm a G.. pretty good so far but the track change direction every 10 seconds. The beats are crazy too, Makes me wish my corsa had a subwoofer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX6RnXebHmw

SO FUCKING GOOD.

The hobbit was pretty fucking good, Didn't feel like a journey like the other lotr films did. It just felt like a montage of epic looking scenes. I would have gave it a 10/10 had it been a musical.

8/10

To the contrary, I would argue that The Hobbit felt much more like an adventure than the LOTR films; and it certainly felt more magical and awesome (as in full of awe, not skateboard speak). It was closest to Fellowship in tone, which was always my favourite LOTR film anyway.

I always loved the scenes closest to mordor the best. Big platoons of orcs running below with frodo hilling on the side the mountain.

I think The Hobbit film gives a better sense of character to Middle Earth - with the Goblin King, the dwarfs, the eagles, Radagast, the trolls - and soon,
Bjorn, the elves, the spiders, the river-folk and Smaug
- all make for a far more interesting world and adventure than Lord of the Rings, which I see as more of a character piece of the members of the fellowship alongside some light politics and action (fantastic though it may be)

Also, in The Hobbit, you get to see Middle Earth as an actual functioning place - everyone isn't hugely panicking because of the upcoming end of days like in LoTR. You're travelling through a more cheerful, idiosyncratic world before the darkness takes hold.

I also think they had a lot to cram into 3 films with The Lord of the Rings, whereas The Hobbit is quite a neat little story, so they seem to be taking the opportunity to expand on certain lore and flash back to give the world and the store more context. I was so skeptical when I heard The Hobbit would be 3 films, but if they're all of the quality of this one, I'll be incredibly happy. I'd rate this film as a better one than Fellowship was, so it's looking good :)

New Burrito bar in West Quay Southampton.

They sell Blue Moon, Brooklyn Lager, Sierra Nevada, Goose Island, Sam Adams and few other great beers.

I'm never eating anywhere else again.

Yeah I'd agree with this, but I thought
characters like Radagast were completely
unnecessary and have my fingers crossed they don't have anything like him in the future films.

Naw, I loved him. He was so English, so very much of the Hobbit's character. Maybe we could have done without Sebastian, but I think overall the addition wasn't a harmful one. Will be cool seeing more of him as the story of the Necromancer develops in the sequels.

Radagast is the anti-Saruman. He shows the innocent, quirky, batshit-crazy goodness of Middle Earth - which Saruman completely doesn't understand, unlike Gandalf. I agree that the hedgehog saving moment was a bit cartoony, but I liked it as it was. Any more ridiculous and it would have turned me off, but as it stands, I'm more than happy with it.
