Bungie Weekly Update: 06/29/07

frank tends to exaggerate in these updates though... ;)
Wait, are you saying it doesn't "steal light from this universe, and passes it into another one, where it is no doubt gorged upon by 5th dimensional megabeings"?

I took that literally. :p

Well, it may be something that hasn't been revealed to us yet but is in game (a model of something perhaps), otherwise why would he say (unless its just meant to be a surprise when seen in person): "I wish I could say more, but I would get stabbed, or throttled, no doubt."

I have a question... Does Jason Jones exist? I never see interviews with him... never seen a Bungie update mention him... yet he is like the lead designer of Halo and my personal god.

wtf

got lost on the second page..

man there's a lot of halo avatars in here.
Blame MS or Bungie for releasing some awesome marketing concept art.

squicken is a troll though, there's something about him that makes me feel uncomfortable.

yeah, frank had mentioned him a week or two back actually (here?). something to the extent of, 'yes, hes still here, in fact hes right around the corner now. he still avoids any sort of attention from media'.

Yeah, he's always disliked media attention. I saw footage of a Bungie fan convention at E3 many years back where he had to be all but physically hauled on stage for a Q&A with fans. He seems like the kind of guy that just takes pride in the work, not the attention. I was pretty excited to see he was doing commentary on the cinematics on the Legendary set.

Well I always enjoyed listening to him in the Halo documentaries. I can understand him not liking the media attention ect. Alot of brilliant guys don't like publicity... for example my avatar (Aphex/Richard James) hates interviews and any sort of media attention. But I still love him.

:)

Have you ever seen God?

Great update as usual :)

In reference to that ign article, I had just thought about whether equipment would be usable in campaign last night, now i know :D

I hope the ai won't get all confused by bubble shields like ghaleon said though.

Media-Attention usually equals sunlight and taking time away from working.

Bungie employees don't get much of either.

If our Avatar's combined together to make something huge, what would it be?

IGN: Did the three gadgets in the beta turn out as you'd hoped? Did people use them in unexpected ways or was it on par with Bungie's private beta testing?

O'Connor: People used them just as we'd hoped, and we think that the introduction of more of them in the final game will be easily accepted and adopted by players as a result. Some of them are cool, some of them are plain nasty. Using equipment in Campaign is really interesting though. You're not the only one who can deploy equipmentÂ…

How did I miss that?!?!?

So basically:
- more equipment than what we saw in the beta
- will be available for use in campaign
- Covenant/Flood can also use equipment

AWESOME

Those immediately came to mind. Would be neat to approach a group of Brutes and watch 'em all toss those things down.

Ohhhh. Nice one.

I'm still hoping to see Jacka phalanxl formations though (from E3 2003 demo).

Halo2 had some brief equipment ideas: the grunts that plop down the little turrets in a few of the levels. Always canned and in the same place though...its gonna be awesome to see this expanded on in Halo 3. And you know there is gonna be run grunt that deploys the gravlift as you drive your warthog, cuz the result is just too funny.

The legendary difficulty adjustments has me excited. Halo 1 legendary was hard but fair. Halo 2 legendary was work in certain levels. Hopefully they realize silent insta-kill snipes from specks onscreen as you enter an area the first time, or they get magically spawned in certain areas you are already in = ass. Spawning you with a needler and 4 grunts and 2 Brutes that respawn in waves = just plain mean (you know the level). Hitting an Elite in the front with a sword and getting no reaction and no kill, and then the elite meleeing you back with his gun while you have full shield and insta-killing you = unfair. Jet Pack Elites that already have the key advantage of flight and often come in pairs, and yet ALSO wield dual plasma guns that take out a shield in T minus 0.3 seconds = overkill. Etc etc

Those old legendary Halo2 segments often required you having a certain weaponry on you before you reach them, or else you can forget it. Please no issues like these Bungie!

I hadn't even thought about those. :D

Others deploying equipment in Campaign is consistent with how Bungie has introduced new features so far. In Halo 2, you could board vehicles and dual-wield, but so could enemies. We've seen a Brute Chieftain carrying what looks like a plasma turret in the Et Tu, Brute? vidoc, so I'm assuming enemies can carry turrets just as we can. And of course, equipment.

EGM really needs to push up their publishing schedule. :(

I wonder if Bungie is going to implement silencers into Halo 3? they have been used many times in the Halo novels and Bungie has already made a model of the SMG, for Halo 2, with a silencer on.

I'm not sure how well it would work with Halo's gameplay style or how the general fan base of Halo would accept them, but I think they might work in a mission where it was best to remain hidden.
Jungle level anyone?

I think they could be useful in Campaign but useless in MultiPlayer given the fact that when you kill someone with your Stealth Silencer their teammates will see a huge X where their body lay.

For the record, they didn't release it. IGN and friends uploaded it from the Zune to piss off the people who bought the Halo 3 Zune.

I thought that might have been the case, I was just giving IGN the benefit of the doubt.

With the AI doing interesting things in Halo 3, I'm extremely interested in the new Brutes, their tactics, how they handle combat individually and the physical manifestation of the "Brute Pack" concept. I've talked about this with Ghaleon before, but it's going to be interesting to see how they introduce equipment into combat. Will it be completely scripted, will there be some AI integrated into it, telling the enemies to make good judgment when using them in combat. It opens up a whole new approach to what you should expect from an enemy in a video game.

In Halo 1 and 2, if you have an elevated position, they can shoot at you, toss nades up and maybe even try to flank you, but what if one of them has the portable gravity lift. Now you've got that to deal with as well...

Can't wait to see what the effect of the powerdrainer is on the flood. Would it be anything special or not?
(also the machine gun)

I wondered about this too. I really didn't like some of the encounters in Halo 2 where the enemies just run out in the open (Outskirts). That level felt too scripted. I'm hoping that enemies use what they have in a smart way.

That's what I thought. I got confused because they talk about it in the Halo 3 Gamepro.
I wonder what - if any - use that will have in campaign. Do enemies have radar to jam? Or will it just be a piece of equipment that appears in multiplayer only? And if so, will it be the only one?

Those are really interesting questions. I mean, the bubble shield, the portable grav lift, and the energy drainer are clearly easy to implement in a campaign scenario. A radar jammer really isn't.

Power drainer takes down shields right? Well, do flood have shields? I want to see how they react.

In Halo 2 the Flood did use energy shields as well as vehicles, so it could be used against them in more traditional ways. And of course, it blows up at the end. Not sure it will impact them in other ways.

Buttonbasher said:

Not sure exactly, they did seem to imply that Elites turned Flood had shields due to a little shield flare effect when you killed them in Halo 2 (not 1). Whether or not thats indicative of anything, I dunno. IIRC no other Covenant other than Elites have energy shields.

But more to the point... I would think (much like the tank on Metropolis for example) that Bungie probably wants the player to be able to lay down the ass-kickery on the AI rather than otherwise or to a far lesser degree by perhaps only letting friendlies use them or limiting equipment to multiplayer, but leave it to Bungie to totally prove me wrong. :D

as ghaleon mentioned, it explodes at the end, but it also sucks people into it. i'd imagine it would quickly remove all flood spores from an area in a quickness at the least :P

That shiny object sort of sounds like one of the forerunner-crystal thingys described in the novels.
It could also just be the packaging of the limited/legendary editions or something like that.

Frank said it would be unveiled at some convention later this year - maybe not E3, but later - so I don't think it's the LE packaging since we've seen that already. It's got me stumped. But then, most of Frank's teases do. :(

I'm betting that it is some form of merchandise. Maybe the Full Size Weapon Replicas that are mentioned here and coming in the future.
