Burying people is weird these days, we should have mandatory cremation!

Cremation itself is a religious ritual. Not sure if you have heard of this place called India.

Why not just cannibalize the corpse if religion is the only thing forcing you to show respect to the dead?

I mean if atheism is so rational then clearly you should harvest the organs and meat from the deceased. Eat them and gain their strength. After all they are just another animal like you, right? Do animals bury their dead? Cremation is a waste of energy. How irrational.

I wonder if there are any ecological benefits to burying people.
Regardless, OP why do you want to add more mandates to the world? Seems a stupid thing to suddenly force on people. What’s next for you, require all people donate their unneeded kidneys?

Yes, but semantically cremation gets the point across rather than 'burn dead bodies'. But in order to quell your concerns, use 'incineration' instead then, take the ceremony out of the equation.

More thinking of the wase of space and energy of dedicating fields to cemetries, putting dead bodies underground - just seems medieval. More efficient to just burn dead bodies I would have thought.

seriously tho, i used to want to be buried but fuck that shit. burn me.

Why cremation? Strip us of our meat and feed us to the pigs/cows/dogs that we eat/take care of.
my cats will probably devour me before i can be burned.

How about we live and let live instead of trying to constantly force one monophilosophical way of life for 7.8 billion individuals?

People are different, some have religious reasons, others have traditional reasons, and others agree. But in no way should we force anyone to go against their beliefs even if we don’t agree or believe in them. It’s the basis of civility.

I wanted to bury my mom, even bought a plot for her, but my sister fought me over her grave so I had her cremated and she was given some of the ashes to do what she wants. It was one of the worst experiences I went through. Personally though I believe that the God that created the world could stitch together all my atoms no matter how scattered they are through the universe.

How you living and let living when you're dead?

The dead are buried in trenches. Babies are placed in coffins, which are stacked in groups of 100, measuring five coffins deep and usually in twenty rows. Adults are placed in larger pine boxes placed according to size, and are stacked in sections of 150, measuring three coffins deep in two rows. There are seven sizes of coffins, which range from 1 to 7 feet (0.30 to 2.13 m) long. Each box is labeled with an identification number, the person's age, ethnicity, and the place where the body was found, if applicable. Inmates from the nearby Rikers Island jail are paid $0.50 per hour to bury bodies on Hart Island.

this place is crazy.
i don't want people digging me up and messing with me, just burn me.

you can also become a tree

I've already had it done up to donate all viable organs, then donate the rest of my body to one of those body farms where forensics students can learn about decomposition first hand.

My 'funeral' will consist of a big-ass catered BBQ spread with an open bar.

Used to work in the industry several years ago.

You can look up "shroud burial" if you're concerned about the environmental impact. There's no outer burial container or coffin going into the ground in that scenario and the body decomposes very quickly.

It was a popular choice in the Austin area because that's the kind of thing that appeals to a certain crowd.

As someone that has seen hundreds of cemeteries in Texas, we're in absolutely no danger of running out of space to bury people. Traditional burials are 3-4x as expensive as a straight cremation package so that alone sways the market toward cremation. In fact, cemeteries are having difficulty remaining profitable in many instances because there isn't as much money in cremation and not every cemetery has incinerators.

And I think in many places in Europe they actually do bury people on top of each other as the body below decomposes.

My dad is in his 70s and said he wants to be cremated. I was pretty surprised to hear that, everyone in my family has been buried.

I love this. Except burning bodies is a waste of resources and energy. We should be using the dead to feed livestock and fertilize fields, right OP? Why burn them when they could be put to good use? I’m sure we could even use them to feed people. Ever heard of Soylent Green?

I'd like to be buried in a pine box when I die, but I won't really care either way. The funeral is for the living survivors, not the dead, so they can do whatever they're more comfortable with.

Why not use the bodies as furniture? After preparing the body, shape it into desired position before rigor mortis and then spray it down with lacquer.

When I die, I just want to be buried naked in my grave. No casket, just toss me in.

The way I see it, I've been eating nature my whole life. I'd like to return the favor.

Or do me one of those tree-bag things where I'm buried with a sapling. That would be cool, too.

Why would you kill an industry for no good reason? A funeral home has a right to buy property, an individual has the right to pay the funeral home to respectfully store their dead loved ones in a ritual that honors their life and provides a place to visit.

More to the point, what is with people voluntarily ceding more and more apsects of their life to the government?

"Mandatory" lol.

Anyway, I was leaning toward being picked up by a corpse farm, but a few years back they changed the requirements and I'm no longer close enough to the only one in the state to qualify. Kinda bummed about that. Hope one opens up in my area by the time this body is ready to go there.

Considering how beneficial funeral rituals are to the grieving, it would be stupid for the government to mandate anything concerning this process without a very good reason. There are few times as difficult in a person's life as saying good bye to a loved one that has passed. Let people grieve in the way that is most beneficial to them.

I think it's weird unless you have an ooooold family cemetery that almost certainly will never be moved/fucked up. Not many do.

Otherwise I totally am for having a shrine with your ancestors ashes placed on it. I'm doing this with my dad's (and eventually mom's) ashes.

People use to just use a grave until the next family member died then their remains were moved to someplace like the catacombs if I remember my history right. We could start having family graves....just stacking you on top since 1700.

I've told my wife if I die in the hospital just slowly back out the room like you didn't know me and whatever you do don't claim the body, I ain't in there. And if I die at home just call the Science care donation hotline and they will pick up the body. burial and creamation is stupidly expensive, Use the money to celebrate life not to honor my death

Question to people who have had close friends and family pass away and buried.
Do you regularly visit their headstones to mourn?

Is there a reason we still bury people? Maybe some religious ones?

Seems easier if we just burn everyone? You can still bury the ashes if you reallllllly want.
It's a sensitive topic, plus it's also a big industry with big lobbying power.

I wouldn't want to live in a country that FORCES cremation, akin to China.

Question for you. Why would it matter to you at all what people do with their dead loved ones? Of all the whiny, know-what-is-best-for-others bullshit the Karens of the world could be bitching about, have we really gotten to the point where what people do with their dead family member is something you need to complain about?
