Not to mention, didn't it end up that people generally liked Color Splash?

What next Metroid?
Is the team still at Nintendo? Is there a realistic chance at reassembling them in active roles?I always wished Sakamoto's team re-did Metroid 2 right after Zero Mission. I would like to see the team develop Dread or a true 2D Metroid game in the future.
"At Nintendo we are always trying to think of ways to bring new experiences to our fans. As we have had great success with Metroid, Super Metroid, Fusion and other 2D games, as well as the 3D prime series, we imagine the next Metroid to be something unique. We are continuing to come up with new ideas."
Seriously though, why do people think there will be a new Metroid any time soon? It's been clear for a while that no one at Nintendo has a clue about what they should be doing with the franchise. Both Sakamoto and Tanabe's most recent contributions were massive bombs hated by almost the entire fandom. They only seem interested in Metroid as a vehicle for their bad and dumb C-rate science fiction stories now, not as a setting for tightly designed labyrinth-based action adventures. Metroid's only hope is taking it away from them and giving it to someone who actually wants to make a Metroid game, but is there any indication such a person exists in Nintendo, and even if there is, what's Nintendo's motivation to do it when the previous games have bombed so badly?
Holy hell, that would be amazing.2D Metroid.

Just playing through this one (finally) and it's stunning, literally great...
Metroid fans are weird. It skips a single gen (you know, like it did between Super and Metroid Prime) and people think it's dead.
Wasn't that the case with Star Fox though? Hell Punchout came back after skipping 2 gens somehow!
Isn't the Retro of today and the Metroid-era Retro totally different companies? I know there were plenty of employees and higher-ups that left.
Easily.
I really like AM2R for what it was, it's a great indie/homebrew achievement. But it pales next to the SNES and GBA Metroids. It pales next to Nintendo's many recent 2D games. Here's why:
Some of the bosses are so-so, a little uninspired and unmemorable.
The enemy and background art can be really inconsistent and uncohesive with other parts of the stage.
The difficulty/balance feels off at certain parts of the game's progress.
The map design is subpar compared to the official games. There are meandering, zig-zaggy areas. You have to go through these annoying, tedious tunnels a bunch of times and get slowed down for no reason. Some parts of the map just feel sloppy, unnecessarily huge and empty.
This would be a decent 7/10 Metroid and probably near the bottom of everyone's favorite Metroid game list if it was an official Nintendo game.
Take it to Sakamoto
Federation Force was his pet project, he wanted to make it.
I kind of agree with this, but it is a fan game and you have to be a little more forgiving. By Nintendo standards yes, it's not as good as Fusion of ZM, but the fact that it's as close as it is is impressive, and a 7/10 sidescrolling Metroid is still better than anything Nintendo has done with the series in the past decade.
Super Metroid was way too easy after Metroid and Return of Samus and that took away a lot of my enjoyment when I first played it all those years ago.

Yeah exactly, I enjoyed it but the conceit that it was somehow a high bar for the company that made Super Metroid, Fusion and Zero Mission to pass is just silly. Even Federation Force, while a worse idea for a game and pretty bland, was a vastly more ambitious and higher quality production.Oh, I am. It was one of my favorite games last year. I understand it's going to be a little rough in places because it wasn't done by a large professional team with the 6 figure budget of the GBA titles.
Eh? the latest release was a spin-off but has the Prime name. And Zero Mission was released 'post Prime'.They can but I don't think they will. Their post-Prime output is 0-2 right now.

Really they have one misstep in Other M, and a completely inoffensive multiplayer spin-off that's only a big deal because it was released at a time when there was no recent mainline game. I found Federation Force to be better than Triforce Heroes or Hyrule Warriors Legends, but you don't hear anyone saying Zelda is dead, only because other recent main Zelda games are a thing.

Yes, because it will be a legal product for sale.
As impressive as fan remakes can be, they're still back alley bootlegs of better games.
Just dig a little.Where is a good ol samaritan supposed to download AM2R? Cause officially Nintendo got all anal about it. Just torrent searching? Or do some websites host it not giving a damn?
