Can we talk about the apparent iCloud break-in?

What a crazy day.

I feel guilty, but I always seek out pictures when shit like this hits. Even when I feel bad I simply can't stop myself. It's like some flaw in my programming I guess.

All I'll say is that Jennifer Lawrence is fine as fuck. Hope Solo also. Good gawd.
You're not the only one. Having the urge to look at nudes or something disgusting is normal.

It's really troubling that Apple (and probably Google and MS) have their phones set up in this fashion. Cloud sharing should be opt-in rather than opt-out. I hope they get the shit sued out of them for this.

Again, if this is from iCloud, I doubt that it was about "cloud sharing". Someone probably downloaded their entire phone backups. And the truth of the matter is, the vast majority of people who are going to use phone backups are going to upload them to the cloud (iCloud specifically), because that's by far the most convenient place to have them.

Really doesn't change my original point. Cloud saving should be opt-in.

It is opt-in.

You have to first opt-in to iCloud (and accept the Terms of Service). After that you have to manually enable the various services like Photo Stream and backups.

In all those cases you'll be reimbursed by the bank or the credit card company, or even sony.
Not the same thing.

Did Phil Fish get "reimbursed" for having all of his personal information shared with the entire internet?

You're right, I don't. But I'm not looking at the pictures, so I don't have to pretend I know anything solid, to justify my actions. I can tell you though, that a lot of women would find this absolutely devastating. Enough pictures were released, of enough people, that it's likely a few of them feel that same devastation.

If you feel comfortable consuming these photos, knowing that, then go ahead I guess. But pretending this doesn't matter at all? Ugh, that's just making it worse. It's dehumanizing them, on top of everything else. It's pretending they don't have feelings at all, so people can look at these pictures without guilt.

You said you don't know and, then, you carry speaking out for them about how they feel.

That's also completely different. Phil Fish wasn't targeted because of how good his ass or dick look. This would be similar if all these celebrities had their social security numbers and passwords leaked, or if important contracts and earnings were also leaked. What happened to Phil Fish was to shame and put a dent into a indie game figure, it was political.

The Fappening amounts to attractive people having their sexual privacy thrown out, because they're attractive and the internet is exploitative. Both events aren't morally right, but they aren't the same.

As big a star as she is, why would she do that on tape? Crazy what a guy they like can make any girl do (and vice versa)
This is the obvious takeaway here. Not that she's empowered and is allowed to fuck however she wants on tape as much as she wants because she's a grown adult.

Seriously.

Ffs, these are adults. If they want to fuck and take pictures, they should be free to without worrying about some creepy assholes violating their privacy.

^pretty sure people are getting banned for that. Better hurry with that edit button!

Didn't say they were the same. Try again.

The price of fame. People don't give a fuck about regular folk naked or watching them fuck outside of tube sites. Famous people don't play by the same rules as the average Joe. This isn't about what's fair and what's not. It's just how it is.

Why make a comparison like that to begin with?

Don't know why you're throwing snark at me, I'm not arguing that stuff being online means its fair game for everybody, or that privacy isn't reserved just for non celebrities. You generalized the issue as "how can somebody get reimbursed when their private information is aired out", it isn't that simple.

It's still kind of up in the air whether or not this was actually a leak from iCloud. There's a bunch of InfoSec people on Twitter trying to get to the bottom of it.

I' m the only one who think the this is more a case of social engineering than a real security break ?

We just don't have enough data to know one way or the other.

That said, having dealt with Apple over the years at various jobs from a partner/customer/vendor perspective, they suck at the internet way more than most would expect. They put a pretty face on their services, but their back-ends are a mess. They outsource a ton of their infrastructure for their cloud services. Their APIs are a mess, inconsistent, poorly documented and riddled with 3rd party software that their support knows nothing about. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if someone figured out an obscure exploit to grab others' photos.

Edit: Just to clarify, because I realize that reads as particularly harsh, everyone 'sucks at the internet' to some degree, even Google. Also, I can pretty much guarantee security people at quite a few other companies besides Apple are losing sleep tonight over this.

Jennifer Lawrence's tasteful nudes exemplify her unique joie de vivre that the American public fell in love with in the first place. She'll be fine.

Don't online bank, buy anything online, subscribe to PS+ or XBL, sign up for financial aid, or give out any sort of information online either. Somebody could steal it.

I had to call my bank and transunion because my information was stolen last year so they literally were checking and freezing various accounts and actions in my name.

I was aware that it could happen and I sort of knew how to deal with it. You should be aware that this could happen.

For non-iOS users

During initial phone setup, you're prompted on whether or not you want to Enable iCloud. This creates two folders in your library; one with local storage and the other named Photostream which is a copy of the local storage content but placed online.

The trouble is people rarely notice this second folder and instead browse their local storage. When they delete things, they are deleting it from that specific folder. The copy of the files still remain in Photostream.

Not really just an iOS thing either. There are apps for iOS and Android that will sync photos to some type of cloud storage. Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc all have this and I believe the default option is to turn it on when you first fire up all of those apps.

Thus hack is probably not photo stream but people managing to get at the full icloud backups.
