Looking, hopefully, for a home gym system that employs free weights as opposed to resistance, but I'll take either or.

I want to focus mainly on chest and arm workout, butterflies are a must.

Not willing to spend over $300 for it. Help me, GAF!

300 bucks won't get you anything worthwhile. Join a gym instead.

I just finished building my home gym, I spent about 4000 all together. The problem with the cheap stuff is that it doesn't last or work properly. I got 600 lbs of steel plates, an olympic bar, a chin/dip station rated for 500 pounds (so I can do weighted chins), very thick rubber mats (to save my floor) and a Schwin treadmill. It's good stuff and I think the expenditure is worth not having to deal with annoying soccer moms and teenagers at the gym.

Wal-Mart has a Gold's Gym XR5 or something like that... Olympic sized barbell, lat tower, adjustable bench, leg things, etc for about $110. It's a Wal-Mart bench though, so that's taking a chance. Also try stores like The Sports Authority, Dick's Sporting Goods, or any sort of chain sports store like that. They usually have a few good benches for under $300. Stay away from fitness-only places that sell nothing but benches and treadmills, they have higher prices just to stay in business since they naturally sell very few things, and you're getting the same quality as you would somewhere else. Larger chain stores can afford to take a little bit of a loss and make up for it somewhere else.

I agree with joining a gym, I find I never use any of the equipment I have at home. Contrary to what the informercials say I find it easier to set aside time to actually get my butt to the gym, if I have equipment at home I basically end up saying, "I can do it anytime, so I'll just not do it now." Whereas a trip to the gym gets worked into my schedule and I always go.

Other plusses of going to my university's gym include timing when I'll be in the locker room so as to coincide with the start and end of the male swim team practices. :lol :D

Nothing replaces a gym. At home you're more prone to doing the same exercises meaning you'll plateau much longer. At a gym you get a lot more variety in your training.

I have a hectic schedule. Can't afford to go to the gym. I need something at home. I was thinking about getting a bench press unit, but I don't know of any good sites that have them. C'mon guys, you can do better than this. Help a booger out!

Real easy, just start out with some free weights and a simple work bench. There are plenty of ways to get fit without spending an assload of cash.

Personally, if you're going to be lifting by yourself, i'd reccomend dumbells before a becn designed for barbells. It's very possible to overestimate your strength when benching and get yourself into a position where you have to much weight to get it back on the rack. I've done it, and I know others who have as well.
