Starfield Shattered Space |OT| Is that the Great Serpent or are you just happy to see me?

Finished!

Took me 19 hours, haven’t done all side quests but most I think.

I liked it a lot, felt like a return to classic Bethesda. The hand crafted structure was great. Really liked the dam research area, the design is on point. And loved the end area, looked amazing with all the plants and flowers combined with high tech surfaces. Superb! 👌

But this planet, in general, wasn’t really my thing. Tried to look for some other biomes with more nature but it’s all kinda stoney. Was fairly good for the car though, I drove to all the outside areas.

I started with a level 28 wakizashi space samurai, made it easy in some ways but really challenging in other ways. Regular zealots was just chop chop dead. Phantoms were more challenging since they teleport, still okay. Vortex horror fights were lenghty ordeals of circling and slashing and jumping away in panic. Near the end I swapped to regular fire power, can’t remember the name of the gun now but the laser sight is a square of dots and it randomly fling out explosive shots. Found it is some loot chest. Very very verrry good gun! Would’ve probably been easy peasy to play through the whole expansion with that.

Missed opportunity…
…to not have a big ass Vortex Horror boss fight. I thought they would do that. There were the smaller white ones and the bigger dark ones, would’ve been perfect to have an overgrown specimen at the end, merged together with Anasko or something like that.

I kinda want to replay to see if some choices truly matter, I never went back to reload so lots of failed persuation attempts.

Like…
Can you convince the brothers not to fight? I failed the persuation and it ended with tranquilizer in the drinks, did it on both so no injuries, yet.

And…
What happens if you unleash the Sepent’s Crusade? Will it pull phantoms into the base game?

Anyhow, this was truly great for me. I’ve been fine with MC 85 for the base game. I’ll go with 9/10 on Shattered Space. Bit higher because I enjoy the hand crafted locations. It’s still not Skyrim in space but it’s something else and I like it a ton. And I want more of this! Hoping for more expansions with isolated worlds. They should keep a small team for expansions, I want a Hello Games ”our journey continues” strategy for Starfield.

How is exploration in this?

Can you explore and find quests and cool locations in this?
I’ve heard about side quests that I never stumbled upon so they don’t hand it all out on a silver platter. But I found no Mantis-like exploration loot quest. There were much more locked doors and chests though, often in areas outside of the main path.

I would sum it up that it’s like a faction in the base game but much bigger and more spectacular with some unique things.

Cool.

I have my plate full, for now.

Will get to this in a bit.

Finished the main quest and some of the side stuff. Enjoyed it a lot. It’s a bit of a bummer that the hand crafted world tanks the performance on XSX.

The trash compactor in the space station is a cheeky bit of trolling. I was busy Fus Ro Dahing the wonderful zero G trash and then the compactor started... Very easy to handle but pretty funny.
The people on that planet remind me of old Fallout talking heads, or classic RPG character portraits in general.

I thought Lost and Found was a nice little side quest. Zero action. Just picking up items in a room, but they managed to make that common part of the game take on a new meaning.

Finished up the Crimson Fleet faction question line (my final of the 4). Really enjoyed that one and was level 36 by the end of it (was 31 when I picked the game back up last week and played through the Ryujin quest line and then this one).

Fired up the DLC, got through the starting bit and to the city, did The Duel side quest after some intro stuff there. Liking the expansion so far, looking forward to playing more and getting beyond the city.

Finished up the DLC last night, including all the sidequests I’d found/started.

It was solid overall IMO. Pretty much just a 5th faction quest line, which is fine by me as those were my favorite part of the base game. I’d say this one is probably the third best for me—behind Crimson Fleet and UC Vanguard, but better than Freestar Rangers and Ryujin Industries.

Definitely not going to change anyone’s opinion on the game as it’s more of the same and the “handcrafted” planet more or less feels as boring as areas in the main game. More stuff to find than on random planets, but similar to other locations visited during quest lines—just bigger.

That’s fine by me. I enjoyed the game as I just played it like I have other Bethesda RPGs with just doing the faction/guild questlines and main story and mostly just beelining to objective markers for those with little exploring. I’ve never been one to enjoy exploring open worlds much, was glad the game didn’t require a lot of No Man’s Sky style exploration and mining, I engaged minimally with crafting, upgrading, ship customizing, didn’t build a single outpost (other than starting one when required for some quest) etc.

I just want to do the storylines and kill shit, and game was fun enough for me playing that way.

Scientific Method is a pretty enjoyable side quest. Its basically exactly what I wanted. Dull scientific data collection to start is not amazing but I still appreciated that they were trying to make it scientific and incorporate some of the science skills in the dialogue choices. Then the end has a very solid dungeon. The subterranean farm was cool. There's a couple neat nods to interesting farming stuff like the subterranean fungus farming operation, the seaweed farming, or the space station at the beginning had a giant section with a vertical zero-G mechanical farm that was kind of neat.

I've been getting the itch to jump back into this game and I initially stopped playing once Bethesda said they were going to do updates on regular intervals this entire year. Well, the year is almost over at this point, I've been reading good things about all of the minor updates, and the DLC has been out for a month now.

Does anyone know if this big DLC update was the last update for the game? I couldn't see a roadmap anywhere so I'm wondering if I should continue to wait for more smaller stuff like the vehicle update or not.

There's also been rumors of them starting production on their next game so I felt that maybe now would be a good time to check in with this thread to make sure.

I think there is/was a plan for year 2 stuff, might have changed since mind.

They were teasing making your own space station and the 2nd expansion is likely called Starborn
