Keep in mind that a vote for Green or not voting at all is basically a vote for the conservatives.

Conservative supports always go out and vote. Mainly because many are older, or rich and are more inclined to do so.

I know if you are from Toronto it probably won't make much difference, but in some of the smaller places everyone needs to go out and fucking vote.

Get this bullshit over-with. Harper has sent this country into a spiral of bullshit, I don't want to con's in power any more.

I used to vote Green, but their representation here means my vote goes to shit, as we're a very 'liberal' oriented area, so I switched to NDP.. the bigger and more organized version of the green party..

NDP is the way to go, IMO.
My particular district is super conservative so there is no way any other parties have a chance to win. My vote to Green will probably be wasted, but I just can't see myself voting those two power-hungry parties this time. The NDP has no fiscal responsibility as far as I can tell with things like Bob Rae... etc, so I am hesitant to vote for them this time.

I'm split on this.

I missed voting last time by a day or so. So I'm glad I don't have to wait 4 years to vote in an election. And I'm a lefty so Liberal/NDP having another chance at getting in is awesome... but at the same time these elections are expensive an there's better places the $$$ could be spent...

bah humbug with our Electoral System, I hate the Riding System.

Gilles Duceppe is my MP here in my Montreal riding. WTF why even bother leaving the house to vote? As long as he is still here, he wins too easily

I will be watching from the sidelines and I anticipate goofy Conservative attacks ads, I'm pretty sure the Conservatives will dig up old old old quotes Iggy made in the past. Harper doesn't debate about issues, he just attacks the character of the Liberal Leader who ever is its. (Stephane Dion was too much of an easy mark for the Conservative attack ads, + with CTV News stabbing Dion in the back and making him look worse than he already was)

Everyone who votes for the NDP in a Liberal riding is actually helping Harper win.

so set your far-left mentaility aside and just vote Liberal and let the Liberals win a majority so we can get back to normal

as for your Quebecers who vote for the Bloc... you are sticking us into a perpetual Minority forever and minroirty goverments SUCK!!! I hate minority governemnts, they are so short sighted and always in Campaign mode

Liberal Majority FTW

And millions of dollars we could be spending elsewhere. Stupid fucking power hungry piece of shit parties. Why does every politician in this country have the ineptness of George W Bush?

Hell, I actually like my MP. I just hate his leader (Layton).

exactly vote Liberal for majority and get back to normal

Greens?? for what? there are unelectable
NDP?? for what? they just compete against the Liberals
Bloc? for what? for regional self serving pride? they are the reason why we have had 3 consercutive minorities

Liberal is the only way to vote for a natural Canadian

Conservatives are way too fiscally blunderful and full of walking contradictions. Flaherty is one piss poor Finance Minsiter (who used to be Mike Harris' lackey)

Ridiculous. We're just settling in and now the Liberals decide it's time to pull the plug on the minority gov't?

What is this going to cost?

What platforms have the Liberals used to define themselves and Ignatieff to the greater electorate (hint: sweet bugger all)?

Has the NDP discovered a magic formula that makes Jack Layton - or any NDP leader, for that matter - something other than a perennial also-ran?

Harper runs a party of asshats, but the time to perform a palace coup was last winter. Not now. Just like the Iggy in Calgary, the Liberal leader is destined to always come lame down the stretch. What a joke this country is sometimes.

I'm sorry, but that's not the way politics work. There will always be a small base of the population that has made up their mind about something. They are a TINY minority, however. Most people don't know who they're voting for, or whether they're voting at all. Even people who have supported certain parties their entire lives may not go vote during a certain election. GOTV is a huge part of elections. Without GOTV we probably wouldn't break 3% voter turnout.

He wins "easily", because he is a hard worker. Whether or not he's a good politician is up to debate. However, he is good at making sure that people support him, and that supporters go and vote.

You can be the most loved personality in the world, but unless you have volunteers constantly calling registered voters and supporters, MAKING SURE THEY VOTE, none of that support is going to matter.

You're no better than CTV / The Conservatives.

A vote for X is a vote for the enemy!

How bout you let us vote how we want, and let the results speak for themselves?

Bigger cities, this may be true, but in smaller rural areas and what not, individual votes definitely matter.

So no, dont just 'vote for the liberals because if you dont harper wins'; If people voted that way, we'd be a two party country like the US, and there'd be no choices.

Vote how you want, who knows, maybe if people stop thinking like the poster I've quoted, we'd actually get some decent change in this country.

Go out and vote, seriously. In the recent BC provincial election, somebody won the seat over the other candidate by a margin of 2 votes.

When run properly, under the principles of compromise and co-operation, a Minority Government could work very well. The problem is the trio of asshats currently running the show. Harper in particular.

I'll vote NDP because they've held my riding consecutively for like 26 years now, and FPTP doesn't really give me a choice.

yea id have to agree. The thing thats stupid is that either people dont vote, people say oh screw this party because im a rebel, and a lot of people make uneducated guesses. If people took the time to learn about Canadian politics maybe there wouldnt be a minority government and we could stop wasting money on reelections. With each new reelection there just seems to be less emphasis and no one really cares. Majority is the only answer.

Yeah. I don't understand people not voting.

It pisses me off.

I mean. My cousin didn't vote last time because she didn't know who the candidates were and didn't know how to find out, and couldn't care less about it as a whole. What the hell? Just wiki the Canadian Election to get an easy to digest basic bullet point list of where each candidate stands. And how can you not care? Arggg

And then ass hats who don't vote to send a message... how can you send a message when you take away your voice?

If you can vote... please votes. :S

I vote but it's pointless to do so and I know it. Our electoral system is bullshit.

Don't get me wrong, I know just perfectly well how easy it is to become disillusioned with the electoral process when you have fucking nonsense going on like this, but as my friend's dad explained to me, that's where our duty as citizens in a democracy comes into play;
It's an empty and pointless duty that has as much impact for most of us as taking the ballot paper and dropping it into a open fire rather than a ballot box. Our ancient and archaic FPTP electoral system wastes most of the votes we cast and it is absurd.

I disagree with you 100%

in our British Parliementary system, the Bloc reigns strong.
Gilles Duceppe is way too strong in my riding. As a voter, there is nothing I can do about it under our Birtish Parliementary system, he wins easily and no pep-talk will convince me other wise because the numbers speak for themslevs.

I am a strong advocate for proportional representation to boost up particiaption because under our current system, we do not really voice or voice when voting.
We got power house MPs like Duceppe who are king and cannot be dethroned under our system.

So, voting in Canada is not really voting for who you believe in... it is voting for 1st or 2nd place in your riding.

Your candiadter is in 3rd place? okay, vote for the 2nd place guy to dethrone the 1st place guy... our system is broken

He wins easily because he has a lot of support, yes. However, he also knows how to make his supporters VOTE. 1 supporter =/= 1 voter. If he DIDN'T leave his house, and DIDN'T have his volunteers calling supporters every day, and DIDN'T make speeches, and DIDN'T go door to door to gain support, all it would take is a good GOTV to dethrone him.

Everything else you said is true, and I'm not contesting.

Yeah. If you don't like any candidates at least vote for the one you like the most. Or vote for the one most likely to win over the one you like the least... or something.

Just vote. ahhh

Can somebody tell me or redirect me to a place that explains in an unbaised manner what Harper has done as PM since being elected that has got people so upset?

So Iggy wants to step in to save the day when the economy is already on the rebound?

...can't blame him for trying I suppose, it is a good move. Its just I doubt Canada wants another election, and in that situation people tend to vote against the election, meaning another minority win for Harper, and we end up back where we started, having wasted a lot of money and time.

Edit: ^^^post above case in point.

Voting Conservative again and they'll probably win again. Powers will stay the same and we will have just wasted money. Hooray!

Because every vote matters. No matter how "safe (party x) riding" is, nothing in politics is a sure thing. Also, the reason some ridings are "safe" ridings, is because they have a strong base of supporters who have been "doing their duty". For every one of those supporters, there are 20 non-voters.

I can't wait to vote Conservative. The Liberals are getting really scummy with their political tactics, and trying to stop them will feel so good.

The day that he retires, is the day that this riding becomes open. This riding is the most Leftist riding in all of Canada. The NDP is in 2nd place here, Liberals in 3rd, Greens in 4th, Conservatives in 5th

Gilles Duceppe has all the totals of his opponents combined and more. He is way too strong here as long as he continuously runs

question, as an ignorant American didn't your prime minster dissolve parliament so they couldn't cast votes of no confidence on him?

I'm aware that he is phenomenally popular. However, like I said, if he stayed at home and didn't GOTV, he could be dethroned.

I'm sorry, but I cannot do anything but detest those who don't vote. I mean, there's no need for us to wade through facile justification after facile justification for your apathetic laziness, just come to terms on your own that you've failed the basic test for living in a modern society and retreat to your basement suites. Leave the country's affairs to your self-admitted betters, ie the folks who actually give two shits about Canada, and offer yourselves up as donations to the Soylent Green Factory, thereby removing any chance your shoddy progeny will taint future generations.

Anyway, I have a little theory that parties that continually force elections, or are perceived to force elections, will struggle to explain the necessity of their actions to the electorate. But manoman, Harper is a crappy, craptastic PM. If Ignatieff can't dethrone that cardboard cutout, I doubt he'll last long in Canadian politics.

are you satisfied with Jim Flahery? he really is as lame Federally as he was Provincial under Harris.

the Harper government is almost a one-man-show. For all of my years, I never have seen such as muzzled government thant Harper's Conservatives.

And during the entire Global Recession... Harper never ever addressed Canadians about the current state of the economy.

instead Harper went on TV to adress us about how EVIL the coalition threat was last December

Wow

Huh? Conservatives called the last election to try and get a majority. It was the biggest waste of time, and one of the most pathetic elections in this countries history.

The Liberals are calling an election this time because they do not agree with what the Harper government is doing. Which is the fucking point.
