There is a potential 100 million market for the next Monster Hunter out there. It doesn't make sense to want higher sales in the West but ignoring the two bestselling systems there.

The game is being played by kids and office workers in Japan. Do you want to confirm the norm that The West is far more casual than Japan then?
They transitioned from a handled to another handled, which had the chance to be the most successful console in Japan at this time. They were already in talk with Nintendo due to Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, so the transition wasn't too brutal.
They also didn't had any choice, the 3DS was (and still is) the only console not bombing in Japan.
Now that they've constructed this relationship with Nintendo and the Nintendo audience, I seriously doubt they will start to see somewhere else.

And sticking with Nintendo exclusively does not grow their user base beyond Switch. Expanding in the west realistically means branching out from Nintendo only or any platform exclusively.

Even if a ps4 version does happen, I don't imagine it'll be more than the same treatment from the leading handheld version at that point in time.
The MH Team is separated from Capcom big management, and they almost stay like that since the conception of the game. They have numerous occasion to introduce microtransaction in MH4 and MHX, but they didn't. The MH team is almost independent from Capcom and they wouldn't do anything absurd with the mainline series that is against their idealism on hunting games.

Capcom mentioned the difficulties in having Switch/PS4 multiplats but I don't see how making MH5 exclusive to PS4 makes any sense. In Japan, the franchise is selling numbers Sony hasn't seen since the PS2 or PS1. They would be sacrificing Japan in exchange for the hope that it can sell slightly more copies in the West? It doesn't seem logical at all.

What argument is there in favor of the X1 exactly? Japanese games don't sell on this, nor even are released anymore. It's not the 360.
So you mean that the MonHun team can decide to stay 3ds only if they wanted?
They're not as independent as some like to think.

We need to see how well or bad the Switch will be adopted in Japan as a handheld. MH sold lots of PSP's and 3DS's.
And if Nintendo doesn't fund MH, I don't see a hurdle for it coming to other platforms.

I don't see why ? They can expand the userbase on a Nintendo console, while also feeding their already existing Nintendo fans. It's not like it reached saturation or something.

Turn it into an open world.
Have multiple hubs.
Have a bunch of other players always shown at your hub.
Have a group-finder for larger hunts.
Combine all recipes and monsters from previews games, so newcomers won't feel that they missed something by not playing the old games.
Have 20-40 man hunts for end-game.
Long Story Short... Turn it into an MMO.

In the situation where Switch hits Wii levels of success then it could grow. Assuming sales being on par with PS4's rate then it doesn't really do much to expand into a potential 100million customers that are on XBone and PS4, lets not forget the PC market where niche Japanese games seem to be thriving.
There isn't a single downside to going multi platform, well besides dev costs. But im sure a massive company like Capcom can manage that.

Meh, Capcom giving some excuse to put it on the Switch.
They aren't going to risk the Japanese market by not putting it on a portable, and their US public was also created mostly on Nintendo portables. If they are actually expecting a big growth from that, they are crazy, so the logical alternative is they are lying to investors.

There are downside. If it's not exclusive, Nintendo won't take care of the marketing like they've did for the 3DS games, and they were a big part of the growing success of MH in the West.
Also, Capcom already talked about how difficult it would be to make multiplatform between Switch and PS4. The dev costs would goes up for a version that may not be worth it.

I have no doubt that the game will come on PS4, the real question for me is on the business model : If they spend a lot of money working on new assets, i'm afraid that they try to add lootboxes / whatever.
I think a Destiny-esque MH could work better.

Main series will remain portable, too much success in Japan to change this. Anyway they'll probably can port it on home consoles with an higher resolution, like they did in past with Monster Hunter 3U on Wii U.
Also, Switch will be powerful enough to have good looking MH, so I don't see why don't port it on PS4/X1 too. If they would make it cross play, would be so awesome! Pls Capcom, do it!

Would get a sale from me if it goes console. Can't stand the 3ds build for playing monster hunting games.
I think it's very possible that MH can come to PS4/XB1. The Switch will also probably get something, but will it be the same as the XB1/PS4 versions or it's own game? Also, is Capcom willing to give Monster Hunter an AAA budget to make it more appealing in the west? They've been pretty safe with the franchise.

It's worth pointing out that Toyo Keizai weekly issued like 2 month ago did say mainline MH series staying on 3DS was indeed a moneyhat, well, sort of. It said significant amount of money were offered but never said in what form, so I'm expecting marketing deals, development assistance (there were already rumors about Ninty aiding MH development). It's also worth noting that the article was treating the move in very positive way, stating that showed how aggressive Nintendo was to ensure 3DS's market share.

This assumes that the 'Nintendo Audience' was what was selling Monster Hunter, rather than the Monster Hunter audience selling 3DS. I'm willing to say it was a mix of both. Either way, Monster Hunter mainline games being locked to Nintendo platforms in the future is highly unlikely. Part of the reason MH was solely on 3DS for so long was because of a deal with Nintendo anyway.
This is a company that needed Sony to pay to finish a game of one of their main franchises. A company that completely killed Mega Man after Inafune left.
They're not putting their own money into anything unless they're getting some kind of moneyhat.
It's not about difficulty. It's about money. They're not putting cash into porting or anything unless it leads to guaranteed sales or as I stated already a moneyhat.

There nothing stopping Nintendo from getting sole advertising rights in the West. Its pretty much common practice between MS and Sony now.
Monster Hunter isn't some special piece of technical engineering. Its a game and it can be ported. If they're already having to up-res the game then the game itself is capable to be on multiple platforms. The majority of cost will be in the asset creation. I don't buy Capcoms difficulty excuse for one second. Every other company manages it.
But back to the original point. If multi platform investment does not out weigh potential growth revenue then its pointless. If it does... which it will. They have a capable multi plat version of the game to milk for a generation reducing the initial investment.

That'd really destroy what Monster Hunter is then. It requires players to learn every facet of the game and rewards them at every point.
Yeah, current Capcom seems to be more budget conscious with their console games.
It's a risk really. Put it on PS4 and Switch in Japan and you increase your costs..but might also limit the uptake of what is likely to be the only new handheld(ish) in town ..which in turn could damage the success of the franchise in the long run.
If I was Capcom I'd be pushing a Switch exclusive as early as possible to try to ensure handheld success...and then maybe port it to PS4 later for the west.

Big words from Capcom. A Switch, PS4, XB1 crossover game is what the world needs. They just need to drop the oldass 3ds engine and assets and start fresh. The overall game play is still fun but it needs tweaks. The mh4 model where content kept coming is what they need to do, not the churn out a G versions when they need another game.
The bigger the userbase for a new numbered MH game, the better it will be for the series future.

Seriously! I've always wanted to play an MH game but I am not a handheld person. If they actually put out a game on a console that wasn't from Nintendo I'd be there day one.

Capcom has always been conservative. The Series was not a big seller on consoles. They looked at the cost of making a PS3 Monster Hunter and said fuck that well just make a Wii one.
The Wii was the first time a console Monster Hunter was a success of any measure and even then Handhelds is where they found the sales explode

I don't think "difficulty " has something to do with technology but more of contractual agreemrnt between Capcom and platform holders.
Doesn't this give credit to that rumor saying that a new western-aimed MH for home console is in development?
