Cartoon Network is getting in with the new … and old. The cable network will launch 13 new animated series — including “How to Train Your Dragon” -- a live action series, and an original movie over the next year. And some of the new programming will feature a lot of familiar characters.

The cabler said it was putting its focus on building global franchises during its annual advertising upfront presentation Wednesday in New York.

As part of the network's partnership with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, a multi-platform block of other original programming based on the DC Comics library of characters will make up “DC Nation,” which will launch in 2012 with "Green Lantern: The Animated Series."

And the '80s classic, “ThunderCats,” is getting reimagined for a new generation of viewers. And so are icons Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in “The Looney Tunes Show,” which premieres May 3. Then there’s the small-screen take on the big-screen hit “How to Train Your Dragon.”

Among the new offerings: “The Problem Solverz,” created by Ben Jones, follows three “crazy young dudes” that run a detective agency dedicated to solving the mysteries of the universe (premieres April 4); From Pete Browngardt (“Chowder”), “Secret Mountain Fort Awesome” premieres this summer and chronicles a “mega-rad” group of underground monsters as they engage in “crazy awesome stuff” like stealing the sun, fighting CGI-sharks, and getting their butts kicked by a velociraptor; and the live-action “Level Up” about three high schoolers who open up the world of an online video game into the real world; the series will launch with a 90-minute original movie in the fall.

And returning for a fourth season are “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and the competition series “Total Drama.”

Always nice to see a new DC series. Though I don't really care too much for the style in Young Justice. Wish they hired the same team that did Justice League.

Level Up = Dot Hack the show?
HTTYD the show likely will not be all that great (See Penguins of Madagascar).

Also, eww, more Total Drama.

They're launching an unrelated "How To Train Your Dragon" live action series? Uh, DreamWorks and Nickelodeon want to talk to you.

No, HTTYD will be cgi. The live action was in reference to Level Up.

I'll take this please.

Nickelodeon let them have that? I'm legitimately surprised since it's Dreamworks/Paramount and Paramount is Nick's sister.

CN worked something out.
They also got the exclusive showing of the mini sequel that came with the DVD.

You owe it to yourself to stick with YJ. It's got everything it needs to eclipse JLU in my opinion. Those Dini days are over, and YJ is showing us that it's ok.

Awesome news regarding the DC Nation promotion. About time.

Nah, AS is where they show 90% of their shit live action shows that cost $5 to make.

I mean, Adventure Time and Regular Show should probably be on Adult Swim, too, but I'd place them on the Venture Bros. side of things. Problem Solverz looks more like the typical 12 oz Mouse mash.

Paramount doesn't own Dreamworks Animation, they just have a distribution deal.

Apparently that sports competition thing CN did did hilariously bad.

Which one? Slam Ball? Or the racing one?
Ugh, I never watched anything live action on CN, except for Tower Prep. It was actually semi decent.

It's nice to see some movement in the right direction for a change.

We need a lot more of this and a lot less kid reality shows starring Andrew W.K.

They have been moving in the right direction for a while.

Shows like adventure time, flapjack, regular show, chowder. Symbionic titan and young justice have all been great. Ben 10 and generator rex seem to be pretty popular (but i dont follow those)

I don't know about that. They're canning Sym-Bionic Titan. Scooby-Doo is awesome, but it's an established franchise. Young Justice has been pretty lame in my opinion. The upcoming stuff with potential is again unoriginal material. I'm not sure it's all that exciting.

Not DC , but here is (cam) test footage shown off at C2E2 for Ultimate Spider-man which has been pushed backed to 2012.

Paul Dini is head writer with the Man of Action group and Bendis also writing episodes.
Vincent Martella is Peter with Simmons as Jonah.

Looks good.
Why was Spectacular Spider-man canceled? :(
It's more of a rhetorical question, really.

:( I thought it was doing well?

I just watched some of the Problem Solverz stuff on youtube... holy shit.

I liked 12 oz. mouse, but that is probably some of the creepiest stuff ever.

It was left off the upfronts and word is Genndy Tartakovsky is now at Sony Pictures Animation. The word is the show died because of a lack of merchandising opportunities.

Those two don't look the least bit interesting to me, so I won't comment.

look as in "i've watched a few episodes" or look as in "i saw the commercials" ?
Commercials. Strike me as kids shows that adults enjoy while high.

Regular show and Adventure Time are great. AT is a tad better. I barely watch CN anymore but is Flapjack and Chowder done too? I'm assuming Chowder is because the creator is evidently working on something else...

I guess robots don't sell anymore.
i think it has to do with how marketable it would be. Ilana's human form would be bought a whole lot by kids... Octus's either. The robots would def sell... but then again what about the villains? who would they use?

regular show's kind of a bridge between standard cn and adult swim. the language alone (like, 'benson's gonna drop his balls!') makes it not a 'for kids' show, and that's without the gore and some of the other stuff that's taken into consideration.

you'd think a 'transforms into giant robot' or 'build it into a robot' thing would be something kids would love. as far as villains go, they could have had modula with some bullshit they made up just for the toy (they did it like crazy for the last two batman movies).

If they care about toys so much, why did they even produce it in the first place? *facepalm* I guess there must have been budget conflicts.

I just marathoned the last three real episodes and have so many problems with its formulas and one-note characters. The junior league is given a mission, screws it up due more to stupidity than inexperience (it was painfully dumb in the previous episode when Kid Flash runs right into the middle of the gunfight for no reason and blew their cover) and eventually saves the day by finally being moderately smart. Superboy is a dick to someone, makes small act of contrition at the end, which is likely forgotten by next episode. Robin disappears in the preludes to battles; tries to create a new word by stripping a real word of its not-a-prefix. Blech. Kid Flash hits on someone, proves completely ineffective in fights. M’gann doesn’t quite understand the limitations of her abilities leading her to partially succeed at things, and trots out her silly catchphrase “hello, M’gann!” at least once. Aqualad… well I don’t know what it is he does. He’s pretty bland.

How much better would this episode have been if the team had been secretly assigned to guard two of the decoy trucks so that they were part of the deception and it still served as sort of a training exercise? Instead we’re left with the Justice League being kinda moronic and making it not only painfully obvious which trucks were important by giving them escorts, but by also making them trackable by open GPS signals? I’d like it if the adult superheroes were actually written as smart so that the stars had something to aspire to, but instead they’re mostly dumbing down the adults to make it easier for the kids to succeed in comparison. See the adults struggling with Amazo for hours while the kids manage things really fast.

I’m not very impressed thus far. It’s really like a dumbed down Justice League for kids.

I lost interest a couple episodes later and haven't watched since, although I'm still recording the show. I liked the two-part pilot, but the series itself hasn't grown from there. It's a lot of the same beats thrown into lesser plots.

Cartoon Network has been forming a closer relationship with Warner Bros proper, and I'd kinda guess that as a consequence there are high expectations and more demands to contribute product that other parts of the company can also use. DC Nation kinda says it all. There will be some original content as part of that, but it'll also serve to directly promote other WB/DC products.

I honestly have no idea where you're coming from but to each there own. This series in the few eps that have aired has shown an amazing understanding and usage of the DCU.

It's easily in the league of JLU already. It's been brilliant and the "dumbed down for kids" has no merit. Plus you think Aqualad, the breakout character everyone else seems to love is bland. That's just odd. His episode was the best of the bunch so far and pulled out all the Aquaman lore like they wrote it and loved it themselves.
