They didn't have to explain themselves honestly, they had no obligation to explain this.
It's a shame CDPR felt the need to explain the themes of the game directly to these people. Imagine actually wanting to spoil the experience of exploring the rich and fascinating themes of the game for yourself. All because you're so ideologically possessed, being incapable or unwilling to open your mind to nuance. That's one of the many pleasures of gaming, at least for me. It's an exploration of a wealth of concepts and human fictions. It can serve both as escapism and deeper exploration of issues in reality; and I don't believe we can truly do the latter in a "safe space." Imagine if our ancestors stayed in their safe spaces. Where would our species even be today? Where would human civilization be?
Cyberpunk as a literary genre has and continues to be a vehicle to explore many of these persisting ideas and human fictions. With many of them becoming ever more relevant with each new generation. Technology, morality, ideologies, philosophies, sexuality, mortality, anthropology, ecology, the list goes on. Getting to have the experience of playing something like Cyberpunk 2077 is something that I value; not simply because of its entertainment value, but also for the opportunity to explore and become an active participant.
Gaming has come a long way as a form of entertainment, arguably even more so as a legitamate medium for storytelling and artistic expression. It's unlike any other media or medium that came before it, yet it's a culmination of so many amazing elements. Although much like films or books, some games will inevitably have endure the wave of controversy that comes with the territory of challenging old ideas with new ideas, or bad idea with good ideas. That's how freedom of expression works, right? Some of these very same people pay so much lip service to virtues of liberty, but are the first to undermine those very same principles.
I'm very much looking forward to playing this game. It could potentially be masterpiece, or maybe it ends up a completely letting down. I don't fucking know, but point is I'm keeping an open mind. If/and when I have any criticisms for CDPR's creative and design decisions, at very least I'll have a legitimate experience to draw from. No bias,, no preconceived notions, and I'll be able to form my very own opinion instead of needing to completely rely on that of others. Assuming they have informed opinions to begin with.
