CDPR officially apologises for hiding the console versions and promises quick updates and refund option

The CPU is doing a lot more than just AI and game logic. I mean the amount of streaming compressed assets in and out of memory alone is taxing on the CPU and a challenge the game is struggling with.

Again I am not suggesting that the gameplay or mechanics are too much for old consoles, but you might have a somewhat simplified idea of what "optimization" entails. It isn't just a matter of efficient code.

Right. It could be done. But it might mean more drastic changes to the assets, actually changing things around, removing props, simplifying assets, putting limits on the number of unique characters and vehicles that can be in memory, that kind of thing. Gameplay doesn't have to be sacrificed but the idea that it can just use the same assets wholesale at a lower LOD might be a little naive too.

I think we are in general agreement, then. I do think that in order to get it to run well there could be some significant re-tooling of assets and it may be a challenge.

My complaint is mainly that this wasn't done to begin with, and it certainly could be in a much more impressive and playable state. I don't think CDPR management made the right call here. It is certainly a challenge making a game run well on so many different platforms now, but if you are one of the top studios something like this isn't acceptable when a huge portion of your sales are on consoles where the experience is awful.

I will never buy another CDPR red game... until the next one comes out.

I remember Dead Island came out for PC and they accidentally released the wrong version. The game was such a mess, I just had to wait a few months. After a few months and several patches, I had a good time with it. Did they get crucified for a bad release?

If you are having problems with this game, just wait. I am sure you have plenty of other games to play. Cool off, take a break, play some other games, and come back to it in a few months. I rarely pre-order games for this very reason. I paid full price because I want to support the developers and I know they will continue to support this game. If you have been paying attention, you would have seen a less than perfect launch coming a mile away (or years away). It surprises me how many people are losing their shit over a game, and this one in particular. I guess that is hype for you. Expectations so high, no game could please you.

EDIT: I also blame the gaming community for demanding fucking 60 fps on every single fucking game. If all games were allowed to play at 20 to 30 fps, they would likely look a lot better. RDR2 drops to below 20fps plenty of times and somehow was spared the guillotine.

Dude I had no expectations or hype for the game and I'm still salty about it. Come on, no drivers AI? Police teleporting behind you? That's just bad.

I can send you some power point presentations that look almost photorealistic. Not very fun to play with tho.

CDPR pulled a No Mans Sky with Cyberpunk.

Their ambition was miles ahead of what they could actually pull off in the time they gave themselves. Cyberpunk needed another six months in the oven.
Except the PC version pretty much meets my expectation for the game, maybe exceeds it in some ways. It has rough spots but doesn't feel like a seriously cut down version of what they promised in the way that NMS or a Molyneaux game do. Maybe some were hoping for more but I got what I want I wanted.
Cyberpunk was first announced in May 2012 with a teaser trailer released the next year in January 2013.
PS4 was launched in November 2013.

They had all this time to get this game sorted on PS4 and Xbox One.

They likely had this game developed with PC in mind first and foremost but what the fuck have they then been doing all this time with the console versions and why announce they are developing the game for PS4 and Xbox One If they knew the hardware couldn't handle it.

Its all good to release on PC. Seems like PC have a few problems but not as bad as console versions. Should have just stopped development on console if the game was not going to fulfill their vision.
However I think they became greedy and released on console anyways because of the huge install base so as to not miss out on the the $$$ to be made.

Then they had the audacity to boast about 8 million pre-orders when the game looks and plays like dogshit on anything but base last gen consoles. 'Apologies' and 'Sorry' is not going to fix that shit.
It just makes them look more scummy because they knew what they were putting out.

EDIT: Sony better give me my fucking money back. I'm done with this pile of shit game.

Yeah, you're not wrong about any of this. They have been a mess the whole time. They never actually began development that whole first year, then they threw out a couple years of early development because they fucked up, then they put the game on the shelf, then started over in the middle of 2016, but didn't actually start the console ports until like 2019...

Like this isn't really a game that's been in development for 8 years like people think, this version of the game has been in development for 4 years, and that's in part because CDPR's management is a little dysfunctional and fly by the seat of their pants. They were unable to answer challenges that are ordinary in AAA development, like working on multiple projects at once.

CDPR's approach to this sort of problem has always been to just brute force their way through when things go wrong. Even if it's inefficient, even if it's hard on devs, to just throw enough bodies at the problem and it'll get solved. And that's worked for them so far, but when it came to the console versions of Cyberpunk, it wasn't enough. These are failures of management to plan for these sorts of logistical problems.

I think if they just made the call in April to move to next-gen and push the last-gen versions back they would have pulled it off, at least in terms of their reputation. Might have cost some sales in the short term but would have been worth it in the long run.

I think we are in general agreement, then. I do think that in order to get it to run well there could be some significant re-tooling of assets and it may be a challenge.

Yeah, I think they were naive about what it would take to get this game running on last gen. I think upper management made some really bad decisions not understanding the ramifications.

There's a reason Watch Dogs got its infamous downgrade; cross-gen really does require concessions to the lowest common denominator. That doesn't mean you can't make something that looks great on both games, you just can't make it in exactly the same way you would if that wasn't a consideration.

I want to preface this by saying that I love Cyberpunk 2077, but the game should not have been released in the state it was in for Xbox One and PS4. CDPR also shouldn't have tried to hide the version before release either.

Reputation is hard to keep, but so easy to lose. It's much harder to regain too. CDPR had such a good reputation, and yet they may have washed away all that goodwill by either not canceling the Xbox One and PS4 versions entirely, or just by delaying the game until next year or when it was ready. I hate to say that, but CDPR failed here.

I guess I am giving CDPR a pass since they made The Witcher 3, which really blew me away and is likely to be in my top 10 forever. I knew there would be growing pains since they have no first person experience. And so far I have only encountered minor issues that I am certain will be patched out or modded soon.

I had major issues with Skyrim and of course, that was just me. These huge complex open world games are going to have problems. I am surprised we do not see more issues with these open world games.

I'll wait for a heavy discount. Not paying full price after their intentional deceit. Sad thing as I've heard it's pretty good, albeit nothing groundbreaking like the hype suggested.

Honestly, they should've just launched under Early Access kind of model, launch on PC first, fix the bugs and work on making the game run on consoles....but, by that time, selling the game on PS4 probably would've of not have worked as well financially so they just went for that sweet, sweet, hype money.

I mean, look at Hades for example, they could still make this a redemption story like No Man's Sky but those don't come around often.

I'm with everyone who thinks this game needed another delay. We got no one but ourselves to blame when we always get pissed and impatient(I don't literally mean we all do that, just in general) when devs delay shit.

I mean holy shit imagine buying this

I'd agree if that was the Xbox one S, but from everything I'm reading, it's considerably better than the OG/S Xbox version

Apparently not:

I would imagine reviewers would play it on the one x like they did with other games

I was strictly speaking from a performance standpoint point. The One X is a lot more stable and playable than the shitty S/PS4 versions of the game. The game is still a mess with bugs. Also why even post that? Majority of gamers who got this on console has a base Xbox one or ps4, because it performs better on a more powerful console, won't change the score or opinions of majority of gamers.

edit: Not defending CDRed though, they deserve the criticism.

Never thought in the year 2020 CDPR would expose themselves to be an anti-consumer company that grifted millions into buying an unfinished game just so they can ship it before the year ends to make investors happy, only to have both investors and consumers blow up in their faces.

Nah, the open world part doesn't meet expectations at all, on any platform. It's in a state so bad right now they would have done better just removing it and go with hubs like on Witcher 2. Focusing on the good but linear story and the characters.

NPCs rarely look at you, they don't go out of their car even when threatened with a gun, they can't even avoid your car, they just don't move from their car whatever happens. They all have one liners. It's completely immersion breaking. They're just braindead. It's a lot more than rough spots, it kicks me out of the game.

Police teleports one meter from you but they can't follow you in the next street or take their car to chase you.

Basic quests are tons of kill this guy / kill this gang to help the police or because they attacked when you looked at them. Only some side quests are great (the one with the taxis for example), a lot of the encounters are junk.

It's just unfinished, for some reason. I like driving in it, verticality and structures are nice, but that's all what this open world has for it right now. It's just bland and lifeless overall.

The game is carried by its great story and characters, but the open world part is just bad.

One of the most solid assessments I've heard about CP2077 on here thus far.

Worth even playing it on ps5 right now?
PS5 and XSX runs the game well, but thers still alot of bugs in all versions. If you havent bought the game yet, better wait some months for those fixes to come and possible buy the game cheaper by then. Or better wait for the next gen version to arrive to consoles.

Eh i think I'm done with this bullshit. The open world stuff just doesn't work and is a junky pile of shit. Anyone have any luck sending open console copies back to Amazon?

Got it on the release day but it's stil unpacked. Heard about the situation and I'm thinking about sending it back now.

From what I have seen the Pro and X run the game about how you would expect the base consoles too, like PC low settings, 1080p-ish, 30fps. Which is "fine" yes, I wouldn't discourage anyone from playing that way, but I could also see why people would hope for more.

I think a lot of us kinda knew it would run like ass on last gen consoles, but were hoping for the best. I'm hoping by the time I finally manage to get a PS5, the game would be stable by then.

QFT. Just walking around after getting out of my apartment and I noticed that everyone is pissed off at me and telling me to go fuck myself? All the pedestrians are assholes. Delete them.

I'm just walking around peacefully and the police starts screaming and shooting at me. Why? I want to leave and burn everything. Bye.

Same.

I got killed in his building by some cops for no reason. The game has so many issues, I can't even fucking tell if it was part of the game or a bug.... They were like "he attacked me" and I was fucking 100 yards away lol

I think some people think the graphics on the base consoles being a bit blurrier or worse than PC, is all that's wrong with cyberpunk, but it's not.....Inexistent AI and interactivity, low tier physics, bugs and crashes, bad side missions....just to name a few.

Game is a travesty on consoles. They've burnt through a good bit of their goodwill with this deception, IMO.
Hopefully they make good with this bullshit, I used to respect this dev

Sent email to that address, to get refund on physical copy of the game. Store doesnt do refunds, so maybe cdpr will refund it, but i doubt it.

PC metacritic reviews dropping to the 80s because of jank.
Console version playing at 15-23 FPS.
CDPR telling their fans and essentially their investors/shareholders that people shouldn't buy the game till February.
I'll be honestly surprised if stock doesn't tank in the coming weeks.

It took the Wither 3 two, three years before the price started dropping from the full $60 here in the US. I highly doubt that Cyberpunk 2077 will drop it's price in 2-3 months, and more likely not in 12-18 months time, especially since CDPR has a lot of months ahead of them fixing all of there bugs, glitches and crashes.

Has there ever been any big studios that had come out a couple days after launch, apologize and admit to a shitty product, and offer refunds all in one swoop?

CDPR's CEO said that "The game runs surprisingly well on the current gens" a few months back, and I took him at his word and bought the game. He outrightly lied to us all. We weren't expecting Cyberpunk 2077 to run badly, when the company told us that it ran well.

Not sure, has any major publisher ever hid reviews of a version of a game to scam customers? So....they have quite a bit to apologize for as this shit is borderline fraud, they are literally scamming consumers and misleading them greatly.

Come on, it doesn't run badly. You just have to turn off all the NPCs. Lots of games have that option - it's like the new ragdoll physics.

Whatever eventually happens with the PS4/Xbox One/PRO/Xbox One X versions...there is one thing they better ensure is 100% and that is the Next Gen versions. Since they don't exist outside of the game running in BC mode, CDPR cannot afford another cluster fuck and they need to do whatever it takes to ensure the Next Gen versions release in great shape and taking advantage of the hardware. The game is very demanding even on high end PC's....so I don't expect 4k, 60fps and full on Ultra Ray Tracing...but I would be happy with variable resolution where the bottom is 1440p, 60fps (solid) and Ray Tracing on Medium/high compared to PC.

I don't even think that is because its demanding, I think its simply because of CDPR's unoptimization. This isn't the first open world game to ever get made and the fact that it lacks so many features found in other titles very much questions what is even happening in the title to even argue its demanding?

I think the issue is more so the developer and not the actual game being demanding as it has way too many problems for me to believe a 3090 rtx just isn't powerful enough or something. I mean...how much power do we need for lips to move in a video game? For cops to not spawn behind you randomly? For NPC's to get out of the T pose? If those issues exist, I don't think we can say its issue not being 4k or hitting some frame is based on being demanding as far as we know, that is simply just another bug, glitch or issue with the title.

The fact that PS4 and XONE versions run a bit better after that patch doesn't mean they magically made the hardware different, it means they actually fucking fixed a software issue, so for all we know...that is what you are dealing with on PC, not that its just demanding or something.

Lots of people liked No Mans Sky when it was released as well. That doesn't change the fact that it was rushed out the door to meet a deadline that had already been pushed back.

Go take a look at all the clips posted on the Cyberpunk reddit. Unwrap that pretty paper and the game is clearly unfinished. The police literally spawning on top of you isn't a design feature, its an unfinished mechanic.

That is what is so bad about this, the fact that even without bugs, the design is just horrid right now. When are they going to "patch" the NPC's to act human? I saw a dude eating air in this game lol

The NPC's are a scripted and lifeless mess. Its pretty obvious CDPR cut whatever corner they could just to get the game in a presentable state.

That's just bad game design. The boring desert section should be the tutorial/intro. The main game should start in the city.

I'm still just going around chatting and meeting people. Enough already. I have no clue what this game is about. What's my purpose.

Do the goddamn Judy Braindance mission, you need to do the heist, then you'll start to have an idea.

Anthem didn't release in such bad shape in terms of bugs, but it was really lacking in content.

Did you play Anthem at launch? It was nowhere near what they promised, it was a huge graphical downgrade, the AI is the worst in any game ever, enemies LITERALLY just stand and place and wait to die. The dialogue options are the most useless ever in a video game, all the characters are the worst written bullshit ever and you don't know you've had your time wasted for sure until you see how awful the fucking endgame is, in games of its type the endgame is what you shoot for, the campaign is just practice, but it had no endgame! Still doesn't! Everything they promised to give us a year from release never came! How many promises could they break? And yes it was an absolute bugfest and technical nightmare, do not give me this shit unless you wasted 60 dollars on that shitfest like I did day 1.

this mindset is honestly so fucking ridiculously dumb.

"well other people did it so can we, right?"

fuck right off. Stop trying to normalise this practice

I didn't normalize it, the industry did. I'm not saying it's okay, I'm saying it's retarded you guys are acting like you've never been through this before. I'm also speaking from a PC perspective, I've been PC gaming since 2011 (well, technically since the '90s but 2011 is when I began being able to get brand new games) and nearly every major AAA release releases as bad or worse than Cyberpunk 2077 while not being as entertaining or fun for me to play, so the level of entitled butthurt in these threads kinda pisses me off, where were you fucks 10 years ago?

It's no less finished than any of their other games were. And you can take that either way, because all of their games got pretty substantial post-launch revisions, with Witcher 1 and 2 both getting "Enhanced Editions" after enough batches rolled out.

The police mechanics are silly but also utterly unimportant to the game. It's not something I even care if they fix. People seem a little hung up on all the ways this isn't GTA, but meanwhile it's a really good RPG.
Is this the first time they haven't led with PC first and released ports later? Genuinely curious if they had the B squad teams work on the console ports.
Witcher 3 was their first time launching in console and PC at once. Those ports were also not-great at launch, buggy with some rough performance at spots. But not bad enough to get serious blowback, and the did improve them a lot.

I'm sure they told themselves that's what was happening this time as well.

Witcher III on consoles still can't maintain 30 FPS, but it won GOTG. I'm not sure what standards these people live by but it isn't the ones they're applying to this game.

In my pc playthrough I had this happen as well, and now its like part of my save..So whenever I go to a certain area of the map and I have no wanted level...I've done nothing..I just step outside my car and cops shoot like 500 bullets at once(It literally sounds like one huge cannon shot and I see bullets whizzing everywhere :messenger_tears_of_joy: ) and then I fall and die..even when I don't get hit I fall and die lol...So I don't even go to that part of the map and now I can't complete like 3 side missions that revolve around that area. I run it on a 3090 and I love the graphics(for the most part...these are some of the ugliest NPCs since GTA 3 smh)...and I like the main story/writing for the characters. But the criticism surrounding the performance, even on the most powerful machines...its all valid

Do big games come out and they need tons of patches and work? Yes
But is this worse than what I've experienced in my time as a PC Gamer(Since 98..)? Its bad..I'm not gonna call it the worst(The Alpha test for "The Matrix Online" is still the most hilarious thing i ever took part in)...I mean I participated in Alphas for games over the years that didn't have as many glitches/crashes as this one.

They made a move and put the game out after all the negative press they got for the whole Crunch thing..gamers being mad about the repeat delays and such...I have faith that they'll patch the shit out of it and over time the game will be what we were all hoping for. But this very much so feels like an extremely early work in progress we were invited to.

I have played probably 30 hours of Anthem on X1X and I enjoy it. I also enjoy Cyberpunk. I don't think Anthem is as buggy. But yeah, CDPR will probably give excellent support.

Witcher 3 was their first time launching in console and PC at once. Those ports were also not-great at launch, buggy with some rough performance at spots. But not bad enough to get serious blowback, and the did improve them a lot.

I'm sure they told themselves that's what was happening this time as well.

Uh huh....

Witcher III on consoles still can't maintain 30 FPS, but it won GOTG. I'm not sure what standards these people live by but it isn't the ones they're applying to this game.
I can't make excuses for the console versions of Cyberpunk, particularly the crashing. But on PC the game is not half baked, it is just like every other open world game at launch.

I mean shit Miles Morales crashed three times on me and had people turning into web-slinging dumpsters and people didn't really get that salty about it. I think the stink of negativity on the game from the ports is just rubbing off on the PC game, which is actually a damn amazing game.
