BEIJING – Unlike millions of Muslims around the world, Uighur students returning for summer vacations in northwestern China are banned from fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.

"They are extracting guarantees from parents, promising that their children won't fast on Ramadan," Dilxat Raxit, Sweden-based spokesman for the exile World Uighur Congress (WUC), told Radio Free Asia on Thursday, June 13.

Chinese authorities have reportedly imposed restrictions on Uighur Muslim students returning for summer vacations in the northwestern region of Xinjiang ahead of Ramadan.

Probably a good thing for growing children.

Is there any reason to believe that Muslims as a group suffer in the long term due to a month of fasting? Are they shorter on average? Suffer more from something like low bone density? Any reason to believe this at all and support a ban? You do realize they can just stuff their faces at sundown right?

Fasting for a month generally consists of eating at sun up and sun down. Something some people do by mistake as is. While I don't do it anymore, because I think it's dumb and I've moved on from Islam, it's not like it's some dangerous thing. Or maybe it is and I don't have all the facts, but as far as I know, it's not particularly dangerous or detrimental.

How reliable is this website? I'm not familiar with it. Do we have any other sources?

The odd thing is the article doesn't mention why they're doing this.

Uighurs are a minority in China, but comprise a large portion of one specific area (Xinjiang region). Presumably this is more of the standard forced cultural hegemony they've used in other areas like Tibet.

In terms of enforcing a cultural hegemony I can see the reasoning behind this, but I really do fail to see how they expect to enforce it.

"They have also made groups of 10 households responsible for spying on each other, so that if a single child from one family fasts for Ramadan, or takes part in religious activities, then all 10 families will be fined,” Raxit said.

Crazy.

The pre-Ramadan restrictions come ahead of the fourth anniversary of deadly riots in Xinjiang, which left nearly 200 people dead.

Chinese authorities have convicted about 200 people, mostly Uighurs, over the riots and sentenced 26 of them to death.

Xinjiang has been autonomous since 1955 but continues to be the subject of massive security crackdowns by Chinese authorities.

Rights groups accuse Chinese authorities of religious repression against Uighur Muslims in the name of counter terrorism.

Muslims accuses the government of settling millions of ethnic Han in their territory with the ultimate goal of obliterating its identity and culture.

There has also been riots too.

Not a thing we can do though... All this zulm but lack of action makes me mad.

"The students and the teachers have to report to their schools every Friday, even during the vacation.

"It's like regular lessons," he said, adding that the students would also be eating there.

Activists have also complained that Uighur students are being stripped off their mobile phones ahead of Ramadan.

"After the students get back to their hometowns, those with cell phones and computers must hand them in to the police for searching," said Raxit.

"If they don't hand them over and are reported or caught by the authorities, then they will have to bear the consequences.”

EDIT: Still don't know how they would see if they was fasting or not via stripping them off their phones though....

It's for a month, and it's not like they don't eat at all. Probably harmless, and ignoring the religious side of it, it's probably good for teaching self-control.

Food isn't really the concern, but water. That is the main killer and part of the reason why I abandoned fasting. It seems awfully detrimental, especially during the long and hot days of summer that Ramadhan is entering unlike the early years of my life where fasting was done during the winter.

Can they actually not have any water? Are there no exceptions for if you are becoming dehydrated?

Yeah the no water is harsh.

China is one of those places that simply don't give a fuck. Protest at your peril.

If there is a good chance that not drinking water during the day will cause tangible harm to your body and health, you're not supposed to fast. Becoming dehydrated doesn't necessarily mean you're about ready to collapse and die.

Nope. I remember in high school some Arabs would still have to partake in gym class but they didn't drink any water afterwards.

I'm sure if it's a matter of life and death you can drink though.

You don't actually have to fast if your health is affected. But if you're completely healthy and you become dehydrated, you still cannot drink water from what I've been told. The only time you can touch water is when you do the wudu.

Generally the exceptions are if you are sick, pregnant or feel like you must eat/drink 'or else' then you should eat and not worry about losing brownie points with god.

In Ancient China didn't they kill someone's entire family for capital offenses? Kinda like a lesser version of that.

Damn that sucks. Still I've gone 8 hours without drinking water. If it isn't life or death and has no long term irreparable consequences a ban isnt really warranted from a health stand point.

You have no idea how dumb all of this is to someone who doesn't follow this (or any) religion.

I remember a Jewish girl I was talking to kept on checking her watch and when I asked her "why?", she responded that she had to wait 10 minutes before she could eat/drink.

I mean... wtf.

You can go 3 or 4 days without water, I don't think 15 hours is going to kill or even have mid to long-term effects on anyone except babies and ill people.

All Ramadan requirements are flexible according to your personal circumstances (eg pregnancy, geographic location, etc), but people who internalize rigorous obedience will push their own limits too far.

Meh. It doesn't really impact you at all unless you want to invite some Muslims and Jews over for a dinner party and it happens to be during their religious fasting time.

But yeah it does seem like a pretty arbitrary restriction. Though I think I've found it less dumb ever since I found out that some secular people avoid eating fruit because "sugar is poison."

Like all religions it depends how fundamentalist/orthodox you want to go e.g life rules of reform Jews compared to Haredi. For the 99% who aren't crazy, you're only supposed to participate if you're physically healthy enough and to the lengths the environmental strains permits.

So if you're too dehydrated/need medical attention you're supposed to stop or avoid the observance completely.

I know Muslims are a minority in America but aren't basic tenets of world religions taught in public schools?

The comments.

Oh my godness, those comments.

The source of that article is The Express, a British tabloid pimping their own miracle diet by cherry picking scientific evidence.

"Allah says in the Qur’an that fasting is useful for reducing the desire to engage in sexual activity" this is not in Quran, this is a hadith.

"I still look at pictures of actresses/supermodels " - you should not look at pictures of women even if their neck or hairs or form of body are visible! i suggest using firefox browser with adblock plus addon

Don't ever look at women brah.

As long as one fulfils their daily caloric requirements, not eating for several hours does not destroy the body.

This should provide some context about the unrest in Xinjiang.
I kinda doubt that the article is accurate because that place would have been burning if that was true (there were pretty serious riots there for much lesser things) though I obviously have no first hand knowledge about it.

p.s.
Xinjiang food is the motherfucking bomb, I just think it's worth mentioning.

theres no physical benefit to starving yourself its purely spiritual, just let it go

From that article:
The use of intermittent fasting offers the potential to
improve weight loss and enhance the cardiovascular
health of overweight and obese individuals with type 2
diabetes and reduces cardiovascular risk. This type of
intervention is cost-effective and associated with a low
risk of adverse events.

Yup, no benefit at all, totally.

The World Uighur Congress in Sweden isn't the most credible or unbiased source; there are plenty of news outlets on the ground that I would trust more.
