China and online censorship in action :(

China’s Twitter-like microblogging site Weibo has issued an ultimatum to its users demanding they verify their accounts with their real names before next Friday, as Beijing further tightens its control of online speech in the lead-up to a key leadership reshuffle.

The ultimatum came after China’s cyberspace regulator issued a new rule last month that effectively bans anonymous online commenting from next month. On October 18, the ruling Communist Party will open its twice-a-decade congress, revealing its new leadership line-up for the next five years.

The 340 million users of Sina Weibo, China’s popular microblogging service, have been given one week to link their accounts to a real name. The crackdown is being conducted in order to comply with new government rules restricting anonymous online conversation.

Eh, ultimately the Chinese are in control of their destiny. It is just bullshit though how the EU and the US have enabled such a shit and totalitarian government all under the guise of economy. This American admin may be changed in 3.5 years. Hong Kong is increasinsly losing what made it special, Taiwan won't be able to resist what independence it has much longer, and Tibet is pretty much colonized as long as there is a peoples republic of china.

The thing is, the Chinese mainlanders on the internet are already an island unto themselves. They can bypass the great firewall sure, but it really is 1.3 billion with their own sites and services versus the rest of the world that shares sites and technology.
