The parenthesis is the truth. We raise our environmental and labor standards and then just buy cheap crap from other countries that violate any respectable environmental and labor standards. (tbh, the world is pretty much a globalised village, by buying stuff you also more or less condone the whole production and distribution process/countries involved with it) .
China has finally started to improve their standards though. They executed people involved in that tainted milk disaster. They've cut down on creating massively polluting factories. And they are downright leaders in green energy (wind, solar, EVs, etc.) A bit more leaning on them and they should reform further.
If this ship breaks open, there could be a massive world-wide back-lash against China.
