Chipped PS2 died...

So I reluctanly lent my chipped PS2 to my brother and when I got it back it was dead. Now I'm trying to find some proof that it was actually him and not just old age that killed it.

I got it in august 2003, chipped it immediately with a DMS3 chip wich I have constantly updated with the newest bios. I also have a HDD and HD Loader. My friend says chipping will eventually kill off your PS2 no matter what you do. He claims that installing a chip will cause some kinda unbalance in the currency or what not. I didn't really buy it so I decided to come here and ask about it. I mean, wasn't that a problem back in the PS1 days?

Yeah, well I had a chipped PlayStation die on me after about a year, while my other model lasted a lot longer than that. It shouldn't break the machine, but I guess it depends on who does it and how they do it. Opening these things up is playing with fire, but for what you can get out of them -- you've gotta admit, it's worth it.

You got screwed. I've had mine for about the same time as you with a Magic 3.1 clone and it's been fine. As long as the person who installed it knew what they were doing it should be okay. Not all electronics are made equal but the denial implies someone didn't want to admit to dropping it.

Are you just getting DRE's? do non-imports/backups work? My first thing I would do is up the voltage if you get DRE's or the games wont load. My modchip timeouts after a few seconds so it has to load before that, increasing the voltage (two silver screws, fixed this problem)

Any friend that that gives you back a broken anything is not a friend. He needs to replace it or I would tell him to fuck off.

Nice work GAF. What I got was a black screen, then nothing. I could reset and all, but that was it. Well I pressed the reset button 4 times like you said and back on it came. :D :D :D

how about for an ancient Messiah? My Japanese launch PS2 stopped playing US and UK games, but still plays JPN games OK. Any help there? I've since bought a UK PS2, but it'd still be good to be able to play US games again. I have no need to play backups, just the imports.

Sounds like there's something wrong with the chip rather than the PS2.

While we have chip experts in the thread, can someone tell me all the secret reset button presses for different situations for a Magic 3.1 chip? Thanks!

no I have one lol ..

but because I can get games for $3, it just makes me umm .. i dunno uncomfortable ..

but mostly I buy the original copies of the games I'm sure I want..

tat doesnt get me banned right ? lol

Is your chip upgradable at all? The only explanation I got was the PS1 and PS2 boot methods. Sometimes try the PS1 method if a PS2 game won't boot (ie. retail XenoSaga) or use HD loader if a game has some sort of 'switching' (ie. SF:AC, AR Max Evo) I'd assume would result in a double-check that the chip can't intercept.

Check the mod chip wires.

While in standby:

Tap Reset: PS2 Games
Hold Reset until blue drive light comes on: PSX Games & DVDs
Hold Reset for 4sec (until the bootup screen comes on): Disable chip

yeah .. I live in Asia, where copyright DOESNT exist lol ..

thats why no one even knows the GameCube over here .. its all about PlayStation, and now the XB is getting some recognition cuz its hacked aswell, and games sell for $5-10

Awesome, I knew about the PSX games / DVD ones, but I didn't know about the disable chip one. Thanks a bunch!

That is quite the funniest thing I have read in ages. Take him on Judge Judy! :D
