Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey - July 2026

That blacksmith is a master craftsman, the armor is gorgeous and historically accurate for all the period armor he creates.

It's a shame he wasn't finally included in the production, but they're no Greeks on the cast either, so I'm not shocked. My family is Greek so yes I'm a little salty about the casting choices lol

Well, I'll be damned, I'm Greek and this is the 1st time I'm hearing of this absolutely fine gent (unfortunately).
In case anyone's interested:

Apparently, he's well-studied, self-taught, follows specific schematics/designs from historical documents/books/frescos (and armors that have survived to this day) and he just adds his..."interpretation" only to armors which we don't have all the data available (i.e, "filling in the blanks").
I have to wonder though, how does the guy make a living ? Sure, maybe a commission here and there from museums etc but i don't know if that's enough in today's world, although, he must absolutely love his craft so...

I'm proud of people like Dimitris that keep our beautiful culture (and history) alive, 'cause this country man...it's a shame what has become of it - what once was the birthplace of philosophy, mathematics, science, art, architecture, literature, geometry and medicine...nowadays it's yet another Westernized shithole with unhappy people whenever you look, zero industrial prowess and with a cultural bar so low that it's actually depressive.

PS : Guy is built like a brick wall, that's the model that people should aspire to, naturally building your body through hard work unlike the usual gym narcissists with their bullshit "do you even lift bro" memes and having their gym selfies as avatars online with their ego being more fragile than a fucking corn flake ;)

Ah, yes, he's responsible for that armor I posted earlier in the thread. Very impressive work.

The one on the left looks like the armor from King Arthur starring Clive Owen

I watched the whole video it was really cool. Poor guy must be having fits if he's keeping up with the film. Somebody give Nolan this guys WhatsApp pronto!

I always thought you were Italian. That user name seems Italian to me granted I don't speak Italian it could be Igbo for all I know.

Yeah, that movie was aiming to portray Britain right as the Romans pulled out, so Arthur was wearing Roman armor. Roman armor is of course an evolution of Greek armor (plus other influences).

Terry English designed it. We talked about him a while back as the armorer for Excalibur.

Doesn't Greece have a legendary lavish social security system?

Maybe this guy lives in the dole and that let's him pursue a true artistic calling. That's always the selling point for a basic income, so maybe he's the poster child for how good it can be.

Maybe he makes other more utilitarian things in his shop to supplement what he makes from armor

How does any artist make a living? I'm sure he has supplemental income. Maybe his family is rich, who knows.

I find this ironic and sad. This is him speaking to The Collector published in December 2024:

"I see people online commenting below movie trailers about the accuracy of the depicted clothing and armor. The Internet has familiarized the audience with more true-to-life depictions. A while ago, one illustrator asked me to use an image of my Mycenean armor to create a more accurate depiction of Brad Pitt's Achilles from the movie Troy (2004). The image went viral, and even Eric Bana, who played Hector in the movie, replied that that's how armors should be in the next films."

I guess that's not happening!

All the money in the world is good. Kingdom of Heaven is good. But I will say early in his career was better than current.

Man I tried Kingdom of Heaven because of you guys and all the raving about it here and I just...wasn't feeling it at all. I couldn't even finish and it was the director's cut.

One of those rare viewing experiences where I was actively disappointed in myself for not liking it while watching :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I watched it the other day, the DC, and I thought it was good still.

Here is the oldest known depiction of a scene from the Trojan War, from the Mykonos Vase, circa 675 BC.

It's of the Trojan Horse, and it depicts the hidden soldiers in the horse and surrounded by Greek soldiers on the outside.

They had interesting head armor and round shields and spears.

Here's Achilles standing with Athena to his left, circa 500BC:

There are lots of details on that armor, and there are many more examples of this art. It would have looked incredible brought to life.

Looking at pictures and criticism, seems the choice in non historical accurate armor and setpieces is a style due to an adaptation which is darker and grimmer in tome.
