Closed? It's obviously limited in functionality, a decision made to keep the setup absolutely minimal, but what are they closing off? I'm sure they'd love any and every content provider to support it, but it's up to the providers.

Once it gets Plex support, I'll use it as my home theater front end.

Well it requires written approval from Google to release an app that supports it, so yeah it is pretty closed

Nothing closed about it. It works on all relevant platforms, and with the mirroring, its functionality is excellent.

Once the full screen mirroring improves (http://www.droid-life.com/2013/07/2...your-entire-desktop-screen-too-not-just-tabs/), this thing will be absolutely ridiculous.

I tried to play Shadowrun Returns and mirror the screen, but only the title screen worked. Once you're in-game, the TV display becomes all black.
My god, imagine a future version added Bluetooth support for controllers and you could stream games. *drools*

My mid-09 MBP itself runs very well, but man, it does not stream tabs well. Attempting to run video from HBO Go, Hulu, etc is a painfully slow, choppy experience.

Yeah my desktop can't mirror well either. Also, I think the mirroring is limited to 720p. Looking forward to real HBOGo Support

When I tried to redeem the Netflix code from Best Buy, it said "An error occurred during gift redemption - please try again later"

Then I tried it again and it said "The code you entered has already been used." Any tips?

It is a passive dumb terminal (AKA "daft"), you wouldn't want to send bluetooth commands to it for it to relay those commands back to the device it is streaming from.

So for my desktop, do I need to connect to my network via a wireless card to work with the Chromecast? I don't own a laptop- only an iPad Mini, GS3, and windows desktop and want to share local video / chrome tabs.

I was just streaming Twitch a while ago at 720p+ and besides the occasional stutter, is just fine. I can even stream most .mkv/.mp4 through Chrome. 720-1080p. I think the computer only transmit 720p though.

Just tried Hulu, works fine for me. Our 802.11g router is literally right below the Chromecast if it makes any difference and I'm casting from my desktop wirelessly about 20ft away.

EDIT Hulu Quality = HD has micro stutters though :(

Oh, I didn't know that. In that case, yeah, I guess we won't see any official porn or otherwise seedy apps be approved. With this and Glass they've been "curating" a lot more than with Android.

Can anyone recommend a hdmi switcher? Being able to watch things on twitch using chromecast is great but my roku still has it's uses and I want to be able to use both.

Does anyone think this is one giant beta test that we're paying to experience? Cheap price, limited software, and Google curating the apps... Soon I too will be beta testing the best TV device in history, found one from best buy.

For specific apps? Sure.

But it also streams A: Chrome tabs and B: Your whole desktop. Both are finicky atm of course, but it's not that closed

Yup, really does. If they didn't package the 3 months of Netflix, I'd have waited.

Since these things have been sold out, I hold off on the idea of buying one til a second gen version comes out that supports 1080p..

I'm a little confused as to this thing's capabilities. How can I stream MP4/AVI files or whatever off my laptop to my TV, is that even possible? I believe mirroring from my iPhone is also not possible? What about pictures or music from the stock iPhone apps?

This one supports 1080p.

Chrome extension, stream tab as people have done or I guess if you need to use another player full desktop streaming could work. Chrome runs .mp4 anyway so you wouldn't need another player.

Yeah I don't see Apple ever putting this into their own apps or allowing any system access, they don't even allow you to take control of the volume rocker.

Full desktop streaming is in beta right now and being improved correct?

Well my stuff is jailbroken, so I would assume people are working on it? Don't know what you mean by the volume rocker. It seems to work just fine for me. No need to go all Anti-Apple when answering simple questions.

What? That's not true at all. I played Netflix at 1080p and it was perfectly smooth.

Yep.. this was my experience too.

If you're streaming 1080p using the "stream tab" option, it gets a little choppy.. but if you do it from a netflix app or the netflix player on your desktop it works perfectly in my experience.

edit -

Was tempted to get this to Tab Stream HBOGo from my desktop but the lack of 1080p support for Tab Streaming and the reports of stuttering using the Tab function makes me wary on buying one.

Tab streaming is a beta feature right now anyway. I'd be surprised if it doesn't get better. Also, HBO Go support is (probably) coming.. so it should work as well as netflix does once that happens, which is great.

Think so.

I have no idea how having stuff jailbroken would help with the apps themselves, if people spin-off versions of Apple's apps, probably just another kind of gallery etc. will end up being the better solution, as for entire "mirroring" I guess it could technically happen I suppose I don't see it being as straightforward.

As for the Apple remark, no need to get defensive, it's just simply the truth that on a regular non-jailbroken access Apple does wall of a lot of functionally, I mention one very simple instance of this. In this case an app cannot use the physical buttons to work as the volume remote or another function, having to opt for the in-app on screen control.

Not entirely sure about it, but I assume people can use the additional freedom that jailbreaking allows to fully utilize the API from the Chromecast. It doesn't have to go through Apple's verification services so it could definitely work pretty nicely.

I'm not being defensive, I just think it was a pointless comment that has no place really. No need to turn another thread into an Apple v Google thing. It was also simply an incorrect statement. You do not have to use the in-app screen control to control volume. I do it all the time on a non-jailbroken device as well.

You can use the physical volume buttons to work as a volume remote, as well as for other functions, in apps such as camera apps, without jailbreaking:

I am not turning the thread into any kind of war, you apparently are interested in that. You change the volume in the remote app because of the restrictions, fact. That was a simple restriction I mention to illustrate that other, bigger restrictions, might make iOS harder to develop some features for. This is not new to this, we've always know the restrictions are there when devs want other features, I mentioned them because it was relevant. I will now not reply any further on this matter in this thread as not to de-rail from the subject.

That link does say apple does not allow it, if it changed I don't know. Still from what I heard devs said this about this when using it on Chromecast, so either they don't know about policy change or there is a different when using it remotely. If I was wrong I stand corrected. It should be also mentioned a quick search will yield various, more recent posts and articles still mentioning the volume control restriction.

OK. Is there a reason why YouTube doesn't remember my last position in a video I previously was watching.

The website remembers no matter the computer I'm logged in on, but the app can't. Wtf

I know this is somewhat off topic, but its annoying. Netflix and Hulu have this feature.

Curious, do you mean when watching the same video at a different time or day? Or are you referring to the switching back and forth from device to device.

Apple didn't allow it in 2010. More recent posts would mention the change and how apps, including apps removed from the App Store due to the previous restriction, are now using the volume button, which they were previously prohibited from doing. As long as they don't use private APIs to implement the function, they seem to be fine. The problem comes from some apps using private APIs for the feature.

Both - stopping the video, going to another one, then coming back and it resumes where I left it (same computer). I can also start a video podcast at the office, close the window. Then when I get home (on a totally different computer) can go to my history and click the video and it will resume where I left it.

This could be more of a Chrome feature, syncing my data. But I find it weird it has yet to be implemented on the Youtube app.

Any idea if the Chrome tab thing that's available on the desktop/laptop will be possible on the mobile version of Chrome?

Okay so Netflix works on Windows 7 but not a Chromebook. Now I tried out Google Play Music and that doesn't work on either Windows 7 or a Chromebook. Should Google Play Music work in Windows 7?

You know there's an unofficial twitch app for roku that's works great, right?

They probably just need to update the google music web player to support it.

Works fine via tab casting..

Damn the tab mirroring works like complete ass on my Macbook Pro. I can't tell if its a problem with the software or my laptop though because Chrome runs like complete ass on it anyway.

Okay. Google Chromecast is amazing. Streams my Netflix and YouTube off my phone/desktop whatever in the best quality without issue. I can continue using my phone or whatever while it is still playing and it or even just put my phone in sleep. No battery life issues because of the way it works. This is awesome.

Tried Google Chrome Tab streaming and it worked great. Tested it on stuff like Twitch.tv and was able to watch streams with no lag or audio sync issues. I also can watch archives without issue. It makes the XB360 Twitch App absolutely pointless. Works great with Hulu as well.

I then tried opening a new tab in Chrome and searching my C:\ and pulled up a .mp4. Worked perfectly. No lag. No audio sync issues.

It auto changes the input device on my TV as well. I can be on HDMI 1 for my 360 the last time I used my TV and soon as I sync to my Chromecast, it will auto switch to HDMI 2 where it is set on. It also only took 3 minutes to setup.

This thing is awesome.

Anybody know if it has to be plugged into an hdmi port on a tv directly?

Could one plug it in a hdmi switch box and get the same results?

I know it needs external power anyway so powering off the tv directly might not be an issue?
