Codejunkes PR and specs on 4GB HDD For PSP!!! (with pics)

4GB HARD DRIVE FOR PSP IS HERE!

OK, OK, we can take the pressure no more! - Amidst a storm of speculation and customer enquiries, here are the full details of Datel's 4GB Hard Drive for PSP.

The 4GB HD uses ultra-reliable Micro-Drive technology to provide PSP owners with massage storage capacity on their portables.

Included in the pack is the proven double capacity X-2 battery which combines with the hard drive to allow the PSP to realise its potential as a true portable multi-media platform.

Datel's hugely popular Max Media Manager software completes the package by providing users with a powerful yet easy to use PC application for managing all media content on their PSP's new hard drive. Especially, this software makes the process of transcoding video content into the PSP's native AVS or MPEG4 a cinch.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Connecting the Hard Drive to your PSP

The HD interfaces with the PSP by means of a flexible Memory Stick™ adapter which is plugged into the Memory Stick™ slot on the PSP (fig 1). Once connected, the body of the HD attaches snugly to the back of the PSP by means of two location posts which slot into corresponding holes on the back of the PSP (fig 2).

When used in conjunction with the X-2 double capacity battery the 4GB HD forms an ergonomic extension to the PSP which follows the neat lines of the handheld, fitting snugly in your palms.

Using the 4GB Hard Drive

Once connected, you use the 4GB HD just as you would a normal Memory Stick™; you can playback video, MP3s, movies and images and save from inside your PSP games. The only difference you'll notice is how much more you can now store!

Ehhh... that looks stupid to me. Sony needs to make a PSP with those new 30GB HDD like the new pods.

I think Sony should lower the price on the PSP base (and maybe remove some of the extras) to $199 and release one with a built-in HD for $269 or something (5-8 gigs would do) and a bigger model down the road with 20+ gigs. It's pretty inevitable, imo.

if a built-in hard disk posed no logistical problems and would broaden the psp's appeal, i somehow doubt that memory stick profits would keep sony from pursuing that route. gaf conspiracy theories are so consistently batty. :lol

that 4gb hd is smaller than i'd expected, but its capcity isn't enough of an improvement over memory sticks for me to bother.

I think "eating well over $100 to keep the system at $250 at retail" would be one such logistical problem.

yeah.. very likely that sony said "Lets make a portable gameconsole so we can sale a lots of our memorycards" :lol

they aren't making money on the psp alone, that's for sure

they'll try to get the most profit they can from memory sticks at least until they can lower the production costs of the psp, then we'll see a built-in HDD

sony doesnt sell that many memory sticks in comparison to sandisk

but Sony gets a nice kickback on the royalties of each unit. Still, I think Sony has to realize that to make a better product and an even more viable alternative to ipod and the countless other audio/video/mobile stuff out there, a built-in HD would be the next logical solution.

what kickback? they are co-creators

if PSP is under $250 with 30 or 60 GB ipod harddrive built in
I'll be first in line to get it.

Can we even get an Ipod for $250 at 30-60 gigs? If the PSP was like that, it truely would be the greatest thing ever!!

are you sure no royalties go back to Sony? Even if they are co-creators, I think they share in the royalty amount whether the unit is made by Sony, ScanDisk or whoever else licenses it out. If Sony sells 100 pieces, for example, and SnanDisk sells 600 pieces, wouldn't the two companies share in an agreed upon royalty amount for the net 500 pieces?

The other reason why Sony will likely be reluctant to make a PSP w/HDD now is the success of those freakin' UMD movies. Sony probably makes a nice dime on each UMD sold.

If they made a HDD PSP, a lot more people would just rip their DVDs to the HDD, especailly with DVD-to-MPEG-4 software gradually getting better.

So its not just sales of Memory Sticks that probably worries them.

The other issue is piracy of course ... the firmware upgrades are OK, but you can already store 2-3 PSP pirated games if you have a 1 GB or so Memory Stick without even having to physically mod the unit. If it had say 5-20 GB of storage ... that situation would probably become a lot crazier.

It's too bad because I really would have no qualms paying $400 for a (preferably) 20GB equipped PSP .... especailly if they redesigned it ala GBA SP with a smaller fold out design.

SCEI doen't profit off of memory sticks, and IF SCEI sees the need to implement an HD, I really doubt highers ups would be against it.

And you're dense if you think memory sticks sales would suddenly halt if sony were to offer an HD model.

oh yeah because Xbox memory cards just fly off the shelves...into the dumpster behind the store because no one buys them.

Sony loves the memory card scam, they have done since the PSX, they arent gonna give up that cash so easily.

mmm..."massage storage capacity". Sounds relaxing.

And a hearty LOL to the direction this thread almost instantly veered off onto

And you got to love the fact that prices are falling so fast due to sales. It's great. Next year you will see $100 2 gb sticks. :D

UK RELEASE DATE 14/10/05
UK AVAILABILITY Limited
PRICE £149.90

Hmm....

Is that $250 in the US? If so then forget it. It looks better than I thought.

Yes, sony loves to cashin on their memorycards.. thats why they included also a SD port on the PS3 then? to support other manufactors memorycards?

I didn't see anything about weight in there. Do we know how much it will weigh? I don't want it feeling all weird >_>

could you appreciate the awesomeness of a PSP equiped with a 20gig+ drive?

:O

give it to me!
