College Football 2013 |Week 1| - Death Throes

How dare you use the calendar year of the season and vertical bars for the thread title, in this the Year of Luigi, OP.

How much longer until CFB starts? I thought we were close, but I'm watching this Serena Williams match on ESPN2 and Chris Fowler is commentating. Football can't be near if Chris Fowler is still tennis commentating.

Sark just said on his radio show that true freshman WR John Ross is the fastest player he's coached since Reggie Bush.

Hhhhhnnnnngggghhhhh

Hey Mack Brown put down the cookie plate and filled out a depth chart.

Wide Receiver (Z)
9 John Harris
8 OR Jaxon Shipley

interesting. Jaxon must still be pretty injured to not be guaranteed a starting WR job considering our WR corps are shaky to begin with. Mike Davis is our only other solid WR. Jaxon was our #2 WR last year so for him not to be given a starting position indicates injury or maybe he came back from summer fat and slow and I haven't been paying my $9.95

Good way to start off college football with a Lewis Grizzard article regarding the UGA/Clemson game in 1984.

I hate to quote the whole thing, but it deserves to be read... So click the link anyway and give the blogger your views.

Great moments in a would be father’s life

To my Son, if I ever have one:

Kid, I am writing this on September 3, 1984. I have just returned from Athens, where I spent Saturday watching the University of Georgia, your old dad’s alma matter, play football against Clemson.

While the events of the day were still fresh on my mind, I wanted to recount them so if you are ever born, you can read this and perhaps be able to share one of the great moments in your father’s life.

Saturday was a wonderful day on the Georgia campus.

We are talking blue, cloudless sky, a gentle breeze and a temperature suggesting summer’s end and autumn’s approach.

I said the blessing before we had lunch. I thanked the Lord for three things: fried chicken, potato salad and for the fact he had allowed me the privilege of being a Bulldog.

“And , Dear Lord,” I prayed, “bless all those not as fortunate as I.”

Imagine my son, 82,000 people, most whom were garbed in red, gathered together gazing down on a lush valley of hedge and grass where soon historic sporting combat would be launched.

Clemson was ranked number 2 in the nation, and Georgia, feared too young to compete with the veterans from beyond the river, could only dream, the smart money said, of emerging three hours hence victorious.

They had us 20-6 at the half, son. A man sitting in front of me said, “I just hope we don’t get embarrassed.”

My boy, I had never seen such a thing as came to pass in the second half. Todd Williams threw one long and high, and Herman Archie caught it in the end zone, and it was now 20-13.

Georgia got the ball again and scored again, and it was now 20-20, and my mouth was dry, and my hands were shaking, and this Clemson fan who had been running his mouth the whole ballgame suddenly shut his fat face.

Son, we got ahead 23-20, and the ground trembled and shook, and many were taken by fainting spells.

Clemson’s kicker, Donald Igwebuike, tied it 23-23 and this sacred place became the center of the universe.

Only seconds were left when Georgia’s kicker, Kevin Butler, stood poised in concentration. The ball rushed toward him, and it was placed upon the tee a heartbeat before his right foot launched it heavenward.

A lifetime later, the officials threw their arms aloft. From 60 yards away, Kevin Butler had been true, and Georgia led and would win 26-23.

I hugged perfect strangers and kissed a fat lady on the mouth. Grown men wept. Lightening flashed. Thunder rolled. Stars fell, and joy swept through, fetched by a hurricane of unleashed emotions.

When Georgia beat Alabama 18-17 in 1965, it was a staggering victory. When we came back against Georgia Tech and won 29-28 in1978, the Chapel bell rang all night. When we beat Florida 26-21 in the last seconds in 1980, we called it a miracle. And when we beat Notre Dame 17-10 in the Sugar Bowl that same year for the national championship, a woman pulled up her skirt and showed the world the Bulldog she had sewn on her underbritches.

But Saturday may have been even better than any of those.

Saturday in Athens was a religious experience.

I give this to you, son. Read it and re-read it, and keep it next to your heart. And when people want to know how you wound up with the name “Kevin” let them read it, and then they will know.

still working on this. Is the deadline before games start on thursday?

The best way to do it is to break your picks into multiple posts. For example, post your picks for just the Thursday games before those games start. Then, make another post for your later picks.

I go by the post time (or the "last edited on" time) for the post to verify. So don't make a post Wednesday with your Thursday picks, then edit it on Friday with your Saturday picks.

Note that you can also do this if you want to change your picks. For instance, let's say you make your picks for every game on Wednesday and you picked A&M to win on Saturday by 10. Then you learn on Thursday that Johnny Manziel sold an autographed picture of him literally fucking a football with a hole cut in it and has been suspended. You can post your updated pick for that game on Friday. I'll just overwrite your previous pick.

A dead (but not really) person posted more than me in the off season thread. Of course there was nothing of note for Florida, outside of a murder or three.

Need to get my cable set up for Football season.

Supposedly our depth chart is giving people more hope than it has in years. I don't see it, but apparently hope is alive.

Also, after dating a non-CFB fan all last season, I'm finally dating a fan again. I know you all care deeply that my Saturdays will be great again.

So that's what JFF has been up to lately.

WE FOUND A NEW IRISH FAN FOR THIS YEAR, BOYS. ONLY 15 MORE TO GO TO REACH OUR QUOTA.

Of course its nowhere near as much fun to fuck with an Irish fan who has tempered his or her expectations, so now I have yet another reason to hate Notre Dame.

39 or so games to go before the ban is over!
Deron Thompson, one of the walk run-ons awarded a scholarship, is from my area. It is extraordinary achievement given how precious scholarships are atm. He won't see much time though unless there is another rash of injuries in the backfield.

Well, shit. Our projected starting left tackle tore his ACL.

Thankfully we still have Joe Wickline, one of the best OL coaches in the country--he's awesome at molding linemen who can play any of the 5 positions. But obviously it's a blow coming so soon before the opener.

EDIT: Apparently the injury happened earlier than we thought, but Gundy is damn good at keeping info like this on lockdown. That softens the blow a bit though.

Giving out them precious scholarships to white walk on rbs. Somehow this doesnt seem like good management, unless we couldnt get anyone else for it.

@TravHaneyESPN: BREAKING: NCAA officials met Sunday with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel, a source familiar with the investigation told me Monday.
quote:
@TravHaneyESPN: Source said NCAA investigators questioned Manziel on Sunday for nearly 6 hours. It's unclear whether additional questioning is necessary.

Notes:
- RB position is interesting. Tyner got a bit banged up - this could be a liability if Marshall hasn't turned the corner.
- Passing game, if it clicks, should be the best it's ever been by a wide, wide margin...
- Factor Thomas (the leading WR last year) into the WR-core it and it goes from insane to fucking insane.
- OL is like the all-name team of all-time. Who is the Mana Greif guy?
- Talent-wise, Oregon's defense is wayyyyyy better than it's been.
- Linebackers are the biggest question. Big losses the last two years.
- Secondary should be the best around.
- Moldy Nachos is the punter. I don't get it.

To see if anyone ignores this:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/9603661/ncaa-investigators-meet-texas-johnny-manziel-6-hours-source

NCAA investigators spent a large chunk of Sunday with Johnny Manziel, questioning the Texas A&M quarterback about allegations from memorabilia dealers that he accepted payments for autographs, a source familiar with the investigation told ESPN.com on Monday night.

The governing body's officials met with Manziel, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, for nearly six hours on the College Station, Texas, campus, the source said.

ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell dishes on the remarks that Texas A&M's chancellor made regarding the NCAA's investigation of Johnny Manziel's future and more.

It was unclear whether the NCAA was satisfied with the initial meeting with Manziel or if it would require additional time with the redshirt sophomore. Texas A&M's season begins Saturday, at home against Rice.

Attorney Jim Darnell, hired by Manziel's family, did not return calls to ESPN's Brett McMurphy on Monday night, seeking comment.

Earlier this month, ESPN reported that the NCAA was looking into whether Manziel was paid for signing autographs at several locations, including in South Florida around the BCS National Championship game.

Also, ESPN reported that a set of autograph dealers claimed that Manziel accepted payments to sign more than 4,000 items, including footballs and photographs, at an event in Connecticut in late January.

In his first season, Manziel accounted for 5,116 total yards and 47 touchdowns, becoming the first freshman to win a Heisman Trophy. Manziel led the Aggies, in their first year in the SEC, to an 11-2 record that included an upset of eventual national champion Alabama and a Cotton Bowl victory against former Big 12 rival Oklahoma.

When ESPN.com visited Texas A&M's preseason camp from Aug. 17-19, sources close to the program indicated that the school's administration had discussed whether to sit Manziel in the face of the ongoing investigation. In the days after that visit, however, the university's higher-ups strongly defended and backed the Aggies' star player.

Chancellor John Sharp, in an interview last week with a local TV station, called into question the original reporting by ESPN and maintained Manziel's innocence. An ESPN spokesman issued a statement Thursday, saying: "We stand by our reporting."

A school source told ESPN.com on Saturday night that things "seemed to be OK" regarding Manziel's playing status and that it was "business as usual, or as close as possible," going into the team's first game week.

On Monday, Manziel was listed as the starter on Texas A&M's game notes and athletic director Eric Hyman, in a statement, put an informal gag order on those close to the program regarding Manziel.

"The focus of our coaches and student-athletes is solely on preparing for Rice this Saturday," Hyman said in the statement, "and in the best interests of Texas A&M and the 100-plus student-athletes on the team, I have instructed Coach Sumlin, his staff and our student-athletes to refrain from commenting on or answering questions regarding the status of our starting quarterback, Johnny Manziel."

I have no doubt that ESPN would have/has done better investigation into JFF than the NCAA can do. They should just outsource the investigation.

He also has us losing to Bama, but still!

There is only one OSU in this thread.

Ohio State: The MCU, tOSU
Oregon State: Beaver State, The School That Wasn't There
Oklahoma State: OSU, God's Chosen School

That cut deep. Seriously, thinking about that game is more painful than thinking about almost every Bedlam loss over the years. :( At least I can take solace that we still should have gotten a shot at LSU, but ESPN wanted a rematch of the Field Goal-Only Game of the Century.

Well, I suppose the upside to getting fired yesterday is that I have plenty of time to watch all of the Thursday games. :/

Let's see...what did I miss this offseason? What happened to bluemax? I thought we were going to be in OT for the regular season? What's with the deal with OSU copying everything from Tech? Is that one Notre Dame fan still around?

All these posts for conference affiliation make me a little nostalgic.

The best thing about the modern era we live in is internet radio. I can wake up every morning and instead of enduring the craptastic local radio here in Albuquerque, stream my favorite station in Salt Lake and hear all about BYU and Utah football.

I swear, until basketball season starts you might not even know UNM had a college sports team. College football here is just a black hole. The exception was when Mike Locksley was punching assistant coaches, harassing women in his office and getting into fights with student reporters at local sports bars. Good times.
