Ugh, another writer who fails to understand the entire basic concept of "money ball".

The Oakland A's used to statistical evaluation to identifying undervalued skills in the scouting/free agency market. They acquired players who exhibited these skills because they felt they could get them cheaper and increase their chances of winning.

Just because Chip does shit like going for it on 4th down (which statistically yes will work out for you more than punting) in college, doesn't mean he would in the NFL or that anything he does in college would work in the NFL. Bill Bellichek is one of the most respected coaches in the NFL, has won multiple Super Bowls and got crucified a few times in the media when he had his offense go for it in what is normally a punting situation after his team failed to convert. Hell, Pete Carroll made a name for himself at USC for being Big Balls Pete and even he has toned it down since returning to the NFL.

I'd love to see Chip Kelly go to the NFL, to see if his run based spread can succeed there where other college coaches (like Steve Spurrier and the fun and gun) have failed. And not just because Oregon keeps destroying my school, I'd love to see someone actually shake up the NFL. That being said, I don't think the author is completely on point with why Chip would or could change the NFL.

Wow some scumy shit going at SC, between this and numbers switching mid game.

LOS ANGELES -- USC fired a student manager for deflating five game balls below regulation levels for the USC-Oregon game last Saturday, the school announced late Wednesday.

The manager, who was not named, admitted to inflating footballs used in the game, according to a report on the school's website. In the report, USC said no coaches, players, staffers or administrators had any knowledge of the manager's actions, which reportedly took place after game officials tested the balls well before kickoff.

Sounds like ol Sal has been unoffically demoted to LBs coach to finish the season. Wonder if Saban will take him back next year.

It was a combination of a lot things, Troy not preparing right, coaches not preparing or getting players prepared correctly, Ginne getting hurt taking one whole dimension of our offense, the whole team getting a huge head.

It was the perfect storm of shit.

We we're running the ball well really early in that game and abandonded, to this day I dont know why.

Still salty about 2006? Florida outplayed Ohio State in every aspect of that game.

We'd love to have him. As a position coach.

I'm disappointed you're removing one of our Manchurian candidates, but at least Dave Hart is still there, destroying you from within.

I agree with a Gata for once. It wasn't just that Troy Smith showed up fat. All of Ohio State looked pretty damn fat in that game. That was mostly because Florida was running circles around them.

How would deflating the footballs give USCw a competitive advantage (which either didn't materialize or was not significant)?
Harder to throw a deflated football. But it has be noticeably deflated to notice. So there is no way to do it without Oregon noticing and wanting a different ball so it is a stupid idea.

Which why he wants to keep Fooley. But boosters are taking over the process apparently.

Edit: oh he was doing it on offense well then he was only slightly doing it for better grip. That makes more sense.

This says its easier to grip a slightly deflated ball.

Quite simply, and as you might think, a slightly deflated football is easier to grip. As a result, a football that's easier to grip is easier to throw, catch and hold. A football that's easier to throw, catch and hold is often a football that ends up getting spiked in the end zone.

Another thing to consider is the fact that college teams use their own football, meaning that in Saturday night's game, Oregon had its own set of footballs on offense and USC its own set. So, theoretically, a team could deflate its own footballs very slightly and not worry about the opposing offense catching on when it had possession.

Leave Dooley alone. Saban said that Tennessee has gotten better every year underneath him. So that's, that.

They were good when I was there. I remember when we went 8-4 one year and it was considered a crap year. But so goes college football football every historically good program goes through a down period every once in a while just have to hope it ends soon.
