College Football Week 13 - Sparty ain't worried 'bout no clock

Florida picked up a few commitments Sunday, the highlight being 4 star QB Franks (previously commited to LSU)

I think LSU learned a valuable lesson with this Miles fuckup.

Hope Les staying doesn't cause Franks to flip back though.

I wonder how badly Bama is going to throttle us in Atlanta.

Go Gata?

Defense should be good for like a half, so if we only get throttled for one half it may not be that bad.

Bruce Feldman reporting that Clay Helton has just been hired as head coach at USC.

Who? I'm assuming a long-time USC assistant...

Seems like an odd hire especially considering USC is probably one of the best available coaching vacancies with absurd amounts of money.

After totally striking out on two consecutive front-page hires, USC is probably better off playing it a bit safer this time around.

Should help stabilize recruiting for the coming class, too.

Wtf is up with USC? They are arguably the top program in the country, but their program is run like it is a mid major. They should be able to get the best available candidate, but they take former staff members and now the interim coach. Lol

USC probably couldn't get a massive name locked down, and decided that if they were going to have to take a gamble on someone who isn't in the NFL or a Meyer/Saban level guy, you might as well go with the one you already have. I'm good with giving Helton a year with his own staff to see how things go. If he had been in place all year, we could very well be a one or two loss team heading into the Pac 12 Championship. UW would have been a win, Stanford round 1 was close as it was, Notre Dame was winnable.

Honestly, if we still had Pendergast instead of Wilcox and Helton as head coach from day one, I'd say that we could have flirted with an undefeated season this year.

True, but Helton had been doing pretty well as interim coach. UGA is most likely going after Kirby Smart, who has never been a head coach. Seems like quite a gamble to me. Will serve McGarity right if we get Smart and go down a Ray Goff rabbit hole while Mark Richt goes to Sakerlina and kicks our ass until McGarity gets fired and we have to get another replacement coach. I'd never hope for that, but it's going to be hard for me not to root for any Mark Richt team in the future. Definitely seemed like someone was cutting up some onions here at work when I was watching that press conference.

They settled for Sark. They settled for the guy they already had. For what is supposed to be the premier job in the country its an absolutely horrible look. Not sure how this stabilizes anything, they look like an afterthought program along the lines of a Minnesota or Illinois. Not USC.

Jim McElwain personally escorting nation's top kicker around Gainesville

Lol. Work it, McElwain. God knows we need it. I think it's really funny that he's committed to Alabama though. Two teams that desperately want kickers.

Hell, Adam Griffith was the top kicker his senior year.
Please don't make me a jinx, he's been on the money lately

I kind of wonder if Richt would replace Hayden on the Playoff Committee. Him and Spurrier together on the commitee, would cause the entire world to demand those proceedings be televised.

Hardin was pretty good coming out of HS; I don't know what the hell happened.

What I want to know is what the hell that kid does during practice? Who is coaching him? It doesn't make sense that someone can be this bad at the position for this long.

I will be very pissed if Pinero decommits from us. And, yes, I knew his name without clicking that link, that's how badly we need a good, young kicker. Though, I will say, you guys need a kicker much more desperately than we do now. Griffith has another year and, dare I say it, has become a strength over the past 8 or so games. Your kicker... just sucks.

I think people overlook institutional stability when traditional powerhouses struggle to hire big coaches. Specifically, the temperament, competency and/or job status of a program's athletic director.

It might be tempting for a big-name coach to accept a job at a place like USC or Michigan, but if you know your boss is a fucking cretin who is likely to be fired soon, you're probably not going to want to work for him or hitch yourself to his wagon.

What I find funny is that they waited this long to hire the guy they've had all along. Believe Haden said it was decided when they beat UCLA.

This is pretty good.

So because you have a person already there that could be good your settling for a Camry?

I hate that analogy that's always made to coaches.

Imagine if we did that to players. Hey the Packers have s huge legacy of winning. Why settle for Rodgers to follow up Farve just cause he is there. Why not go out and get the big flashy free agent for a QB instead?

Swing and a miss.

Chip Kelly is either the most delusional man or hes got the greatest job security in America. Just can't imagine a scenario where hes not fired at all at the end of the year but seems like he isn't worried.

They settled for Kiffin. They settled for Sark. Is the third time really gonna be the charm? Maybe but its fair to be on the pessimistic side.

That or he just wants to stay in the league, and probably rightly figures jumping on the next big college job isn't the right move to make to stay in the NFL.

Well it's a joke. I mean, they could have gotten almost anybody they went after in the country, yet they go for the interim coach that they already had. It's underwhelming to say the least.

Talked to a coworker who's a USC alum and he's pissed. Said Helton is the last guy he wanted.

It's obvious that there is a dearth of proven, wildly successful head coaches, especially when you want one to take on the Saban and Urbz's of the world.

Are coaches like Richt and Miles living off of fertile recruiting grounds, masking their coaching flaws? Are coaches like David Shaw and Oregon Guy living off programs built by their predecessors? Can anyone figure out the Dabo? Won't someone remember that one time Brian Kelly killed a kid with a scissor lift?

Wut.

WUT.

Every Trojan was swearing up and down they weren't settling for the interim.

It's only "settling" cause its not flashy and people perceive him to not be the guy.

I'm not saying he will or won't. I hate the idea of this being settling though. If he is good in a few years nobody will say USC "settled" for their coach.

It's an institutional higher of a guy who's been decent helming the ship over this cluster fuck of a season by an AD that is on a short leash.

I just hate passing judgement on the guy either way. People would have said Chip going to the Eagles was the Ferrari like hire. I doubt people would say the same thing now.

Just let it play out in the field. Coaching hires being good or shit tier tend to tread to much to being like preseason polls before anyone's even stepped on the turf.

Nah, I just find it funny because when this exact situation happened post Kiffin (popular with the players interim coach has some decent success), Orgeron should have gotten the job but didn't.

Brian Kelly should be the most hated coach in college sports for that shit.

I find it infuriating how it seems to have been largely forgotten.

Anyway, yeah we need a kicker.

And an offensive line. And a QB. And to not lose Collins.

Sarkesian, Kiffin, now Helton.. All former coordinators at USC. People are just saying you're USC, dream bigger. Helton may be great, but USC should be able to get their pick of coaches with some record of success.

This is basically how I feel. Plus it feels a lot better for me personally when you consider that Helton appears to be an incredibly good guy and a great mentor for those kids.

If we could have lured a John Harbaugh, a Nick Saban, a Sean Payton, etc away and ended up turning them down for Helton? Then it's a clear mistake. If the choice was between Helton and an up-and-coming former assistant/mid major HC? I can't personally say it was a mistake to go for Helton.

Imho, Haden's a dead man walking, alot of people want to go to USC, but not under Haden.

Yeah, Haden has to go before any real coaching selection can be made.

Can you imagine if UGA had gotten rid of Richt last year? Can you imagine if Florida hired Richt instead of McElwain?

I can imagine such a thing.

Pat Haden is literally the worst. How was he allowed to do this?

"Congrats you beat an injury depleted rival, here's the best job in college football!"

Another 4 years of irrelevancy for USC.

Draxal why aren't you more excited about Pat Hobbs?

You need to be gushing about him instead of talking about other ADs. He is the best AD hire I can think of in a long time by ANY SCHOOL! I'm not sure I can trust you as a Rutgers fan anymore. You must be one of those nebulous CFB bandwagon types.

I'm actually pretty excited right now, I thought we would have sat still and done nothing.

I'm wondering how long sirpopopopopopop can keep up this schtick. It is impressive.

The Floodites don't like the hire, so I don't even know what angle he's going on now.

With all these SEC coaches on the hotseat for 8-10 win seasons, I don't blame a coach for settling at a mid major where 8-10 win seasons = job security.

Dammit, was looking forward to watching his stock fall dramatically while he gets destroyed from expectations (and losing). Would have been some nice payback. The Trevor Knight of Coaches.

He's a young guy with potentially a long career ahead of him. If he took the job at Georgia and failed, he may be done as a coach. I think its smart to build up income at a mid major before taking the high risk high reward job at a major program

Could also be that the Smart thing is a done deal as Schlabach and others are implying.

Main holdup in discussions with Smart in the past is that he wanted complete autonomy in making decisions related to the football program. The AD has had a big say in those in the past.

Helton is just keeping the seat warm until Haden is fired shortly. Then they'll have the new AD hire a coach, which I suppose could be Helton if he delivers on the field in the meantime.

Job security is slightly less important when you can quickly get another very similarly paid job in your field.

Moving would suck, but having 8-10 wins in the SEC gets you another high paying job very quickly.

Hell, failing gets you another high paying job very quickly, just look at Muschamp.
