Something I read from Schlabach, about BYU/Utah:

Oddly enough, Stephenson's missed field goal occurred at 11:58 p.m. MDT. If Stephenson's attempt had been good, the Cougars might not have been able to finish the game because BYU rules prohibit its teams from playing on Sundays.

So Close to historical lulz. What would have happened? BYU refuse to kick? I imagine the refs would call delay of games non stop till Monday, leaving BYU at their own 0.00000001 yard line.

Or they play, and all of BYU's players get kicked out of school for violation of Mormon Laws of Lawly Law-Laws.

we shall see. you army guys are all the same.

We are so overrated at #6. The K-State game will be a better indicator but I still think this is gonna be a 3-4 loss year. Texas looks good again, then its Notre Dame, Okie Lite, @WVU, @TCU, and Texas Tech has quietly owned our ass this decade. No way we win all those. 2 losses at best, 4 at worst I think.

Oh, he was just talking about the two interceptions in a row? Kiffin is right. Those decisions were mind-blowingly bad. It was like freshman Barkley again. They were terrible throws into double-coverage.

I don't see how that's throwing him under the bus. He didn't blame him for the loss.

He seemed to put all of the blame on Barkley, to me. Of course the decision making was horrible and Barkley looked like anything but a Heisman candidate on Saturday, but it's pretty low of a coach to throw their QB under the bus like that after a tough loss. As someone else said, it was Spurrier-like.

Devil dog is a nickname of a marine, Pawwwwwwlll.

That's the best part. It's like he's some sort of audio-animatronic on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, like there's some sort of piston under there making it constantly wobble.

It's called a cover, not hat. The DI hat (smokey the bear looking hat) is much better at staying in place when DIs spaz out like that.

Is it a clothing item that covers the head? Yes? Then it's a hat. It can be called a cover too, fine, but it's still a hat. (In other words - All covers are hats, but not all hats are covers).

This is why I would never make it in the military, I wouldn't be able to leave it alone.

I had to look this up to make sure you just weren't being fatalist. That's amazing. I really thought he had done better than that. I know y'all didn't really have the talent until this year, but still..

eh, it's really has to do with expectations. FSU wasn't favored in most (all?) of those games vs ranked teams. The only Top 10 team FSU faced was Oklahoma. That's 2 of the 4 losses under Jimbo, the others coming from VT in 2010 and Clemson in 2011.

Still, FSU should've won at least 1 of those games :(

Could he get in trouble for leaving attention like that and getting excited?

He wasn't at attention, just hanging out (stiffly) in the end zone. Marines aren't allowed, in uniform, to put hands in pockets, slouch, etc. We aren't really supposed to fold our arms either, but it's hard to do much in Dress Blues.

So what's this about? He was going to salute, and this Marine stopped him?

No, he was just yelling at him for scoring a touchdown against Ole Miss. Probably yelling for him to get out and not celebrate.

The powers that be in the Marines have a pathological need to refer to everything by it's naval term (if it exists) or by something other than what the Army and Air Force call it. All Marine "hats" are called covers. With the notable exception of the DI hat.

Edit: dammit, I'm being trolled

This is why I would never make it in the military, I wouldn't be able to leave it alone.

Shit, in boot camp they call pens ink sticks, sneakers go-fasters, walls bulkheads, flashlights moonbeams, etc.

We probably would have conceded the game at that point or asked to see if they could suspend the game. I imagine BYU would have just taken the loss.

Note to Utah Students: next time you rush the field at 11:45 or so at night when playing BYU, just don't leave the field.

You guys are about as strict on that rule as Chick-Fil-A. The one that opened last year in Hollywood is open till 3am Monday- Saturday, but On Saturday night at 11:59pm, they close. Considering their prime location near a lot of clubs, I know they lose a ton of potential business from midnight-3am on Sunday

That's a great strategy. In a close game thats approaching midnight, if the whole student body doesn't want to rush the field, maybe the opposing team can sacrifice 1 streaker every 3 minutes. That would be enough to keep the game from progressing.

Want a telltale sign of college football addiction? When you completely zone out on Saturday and forget to check your mail.

Checked my mail today, got the stuff, went back inside.

Then about ten minutes later, heard the mailman close the mailbox. Went outside, more mail.

Realized what I'd done.

It's an amazing gif. Thanks for the breakdown.

I don't think he was pissed off. They did a close up on him after a commercial break and he was still going crazy, so most likely he was just pumped up.

Nah, they just have to stop the clock constantly. Passes to the sidelines, purposeful incompletes on 2nd and short, having a lineman suddenly get hurt, that sort of thing. Anything that keeps the clock from moving.

I've seen the hands on hips and bobble head spaz'ing plenty from those guys. DIs are like that. Especially when others are watching. He was on fire and chewing that Texas guy out. He was pumped up, sure, but he was definitely yelling at the receiver.

Is it a strict 12am definition? Or is it slightly elastic like "sundown" is for Jews?

It's a personal thing when it comes to something like that, really. BYU has rules that go above and beyond the LDS "rules." BYU has set the no games on Sunday rule and it's a hard and fast one. I imagine it's a 12:00am to 11:59pm rule, no exceptions.

For people who observe the Sabbath according to the church, it's more of a spirit of the law situation. Some people begin observing the Sabbath on Saturday evening and go on through until Monday morning. Others kind of relax things a bit after getting home from church. I'm sure the church would say that pretty much all of Sunday is the Lord's day, however.

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.

Whether it's proper or not, I will say that the vast majority of people begin observing the Sabbath whenever they roll out of bed Sunday morning. Like, dudes hanging out on a Saturday night won't check their watches and go, "guys, it's midnight, let us share a scripture each in turn and retire to our separate beds."

Most people will treat Saturday night just like Friday night and when they wake up on Sunday, it's time to change gears and tone it down.

Well said.

Question for CFB GAF: Is FSU Florida's "little brother"?

Meaning what?

From 2003 to 2010 we were certainly inferior to them. But since the 80s, overall, FSU and UF are quite equal. FSU has had slightly more consistent performances in the off years, but more of them, and most of that can be attributed to being in the ACC. If we were in the SEC, our Bowl streak would almost certainly not still be intact.

Miami couldn't even be said to be the "little brother" of either of the other Florida schools even though they are at a very low point right now.

FSU doesn't have quite as long a history of success as UF, but we have been relevant nationally since the 80s, and were arguably the best team of the 90s as a whole.
