Speaking of which, didn't see this posted from yesterday:

One of the things I enjoy about these college football venues is the size of them. I cannot fathom how a uni can afford such things.

Here is my old uni's grandstand:

sport_03.jpg

it's small but beautiful, over 100years old. the oval is awesome as well.

You have to bear in mind that we don't really do intercollegiate sport in australia, and no way would tv cover it.

There are about 20,000 students at the uni of Adelaide.

.

Most of the Huge stadiums are 80-90 years old. They usually started off "smaller" 50-60k, but then through expansions and rennovations over 80 years they have grown to the 90-100k size stadiums now.

edit: on another point, what sport do they play there? That ground is not level at all lol.

chicko: Pretty much one of the reasons Jesse Williams came to the US to play collegiate football. He was on the Australian National Team of American Football prior to the move. He played Junior College Football in Arizona, then transferred to Alabama.

Holy crap.

I feel this compelling need to lie down and hand him a football.

Also, I like what American Football is called there, "gridiron."

No, that's nowhere near accurate. I'm surprised all the UT fans haven't jumped all over this already. In the last quarterly report ND is #10 and FSU is #21. In the last annual report ND was #11 and FSU was #22.

Get back in your place 'Nole.

Ah, article I was looking at was only referring to one retailer's sales. That makes more sense.

The Seminoles and Fighting Irish are so hot right now that, according to leading retailer Fanatics.com, consumers nationwide are buying their apparel and other officially-licensed merchandise more than they are any other college in the country.

Last Sunday, the day after the Irish and Seminoles nabbed big wins over ranked Michigan and Clemson teams, respectively, they led all college teams in NCAA merchandise sales

You gotta have the bandwagon rolling steady for a while to make an impact on the other standings.

Looks like some aggressive hand to face play from the OSU player as well. But eye gouging crosses a line, unless there is somebody on top of you and nobody can see it.

To be fair, even without the bandwagon factor, FSU is still a pretty big cash cow in terms of brand. We have had the highest TV ratings of all the non-BCS bowls two years in a row (vs ND last year, and WVU the year before). FSU always does very well in TV ratings, probably because we rose to major prominence in the 90s, when it started to get really easy to watch a lot of CFB on TV. The downside is that our fans do NOT travel well outside the state, preferring to watch the games on TV instead. I think we even probably send more fans to away games in Miami (8 hours away) than we do to Atlanta (5 hours away).

Technically, gridiron is the correct term for our football. Association (SOCCER is a mashup of the word) Football is what most refer to as football around the world. But the term football doesn't have anything to do with kicking it with your foot. The term arose as it was used to indicate that the sport was played on foot, not on horseback.

I have a good idea, ChiTown. You should make a thread for the soccer fans telling them that we have more claim to the term of football than them. Soccer should be renamed to aggressive diving. :p

It's dirty, but this shit happens all the time in the pile.

I played against a team and every time you were in the pile they would drive knuckles into into your ribs and just drill you until you got separated. They drew a couple of flags when we'd stand up and retaliate. The day after the game, I had quarter sized bruises all over my torso.

There used to be a high school that sharpened the edges of the metal buckles on their gear.

I'm watchin 30 for 30 on SMU right now, are players these days still wearing those cut off shirts with their belly showing at training? Makes them look like the Spice Girls in the 90s.

Georgia just lost Michael Bennett, one of our top receivers for the season. Torn ACL in practice yesterday. We have lots of options this year for Murray and Mitchell is back on offense, but still a big loss. Kid was having a huge year.

Florida teams are tucking the bottom of the jersey into their pads. Used to be just spring game, now it is happening during regular season with a few.

That is state of, not just team of.

I think it was Jeff that posted them already.

But are they actually black or grey? I thought they were grey. Not that it makes it a team color either way.

I guess BYU is the next school on the "all black uniforms though black isn't even one of our colors" bandwagon.

Looks like Yahoo is sponsoring a team. Didn't realize they were still around.

Hmm, ACC shortening their in conference schedule from 9 to 8 to accomodate the Irish.

*sigh* I want to make a joke about the BYU uni's.

I should've quit while I was ahead..kinda.

Caffeine-free versions of stuff like Coke would be fine, I would think. Sprite and 7-Up don't have caffeine either.

Semi-related: I am so disappointed that our game against BYU is in DC instead of Morgantown. The culture clash would be so awesome to watch.

Strong was on Rome today and Rome straight us asked him if he would take a call from Arkansas. Strong shot it down about as hard as someone could, basically said "a lot of people think the grass is greener but I'm not cut that way, why would I want to go somewhere when I'm building a program with all the guys I'm recruiting?"

Hell yeah.

What's wrong with caffeine?

And again about 30 for 30 about SMU, weren't there people speculating about Penn State getting the death penalty? Because from that documentary it sounds like that's a name for a repeat violators rule, which probably wouldn't have been applicable for Penn State?

I really don't know shit about College football...

Has 30 for 30 started up again? I'm going to have to watch one soon.

Wait till January until you say hell yeah. A lot of coaches said they wouldn't cut bait and leave until they did.

What's wrong with caffeine?

BYU is a Mormon school, and Mormons aren't supposed to drink caffeine.

A) The NCAA is very wary of giving anyone the death penalty. They used it as a negotiating tool to get Penn State to agree to their current punishment.
B) SMU was busted for major violations 3 times in the 80s. I think they had like, 2 maybe 3 total years of eligibility during the entire decade.

What do you expect him to say? yeah im going first chance I can get? Coaches arent dummies.

Death penalty can be used even for first time offenders if the violation is egregious enough.

But the NCAA has a new rule structure in place and I don't know if it includes the death penalty moving forward at all.
