EDIT: Hah, fixed the header date. Shows you how much attention I'm paying... :p

Look, here's the thing... :|

As I had been making them, the Comic Book Day! threads took up a considerable amount of my free time. Diamond posts their release list on Monday morning or afternoon, usually when I'm at work; on my lunch break or after work I sort the list, moving graphic novels, manga, toys etc. to their respective sections; I weed out all of the reprints, trash and starter books, trying to figure out what comics people would find interesting; I track down cover artwork through previews, solicitations, and company sites and compile them into images; I try to narrow the week's big comics down to three for the header, copy and paste everything together and run with it -- hopefully before Wednesday morning comes. It's safe to say that pretty much all of my free time on Mondays and Tuesdays are devoted to making the thread.

I can't do it anymore. It's simply too much time, time I could spend doing other things -- like ACTUALLY reading those comics and graphic novels for a change instead of simply skimming them, or playing all those shrinkwrapped games in my backlog, or finishing my carpentry projects (or even STARTING some of them), or working on my pathetic art projects, or... you get the idea. It's also too much money; to be perfectly honest, since taking over the weekly CBD threads I more than once found myself buying books that in hindsight I wouldn't/shouldn't have otherwise. I suppose that I could take a more minimalist approach and cut back, but this *gestures at this week's thread* isn't doing the comics we love justice either. I have thought at length recently about the oft-mentioned prospect of taking these threads monthly; however, the thought of ME spearheading that effort is something that I frankly loathe (plus I don't see how that would involve me doing less work here...).

So as of this week, I am stepping down. At the very least, I need a lengthy break. Maybe the CBD threads need a break from my leadership, too; maybe that's part of the reason that participation has been dwindling. Maybe I'm part of the reason... a fresh perspective, and all that. I'll still be here, posting what I'll be buying and talking about the books I love, but I won't get behind the wheel and steer anymore. The only advice that I can offer my replacement, whomever that ends up being, is this: don't feel the need to copy my thread format -- break away, and do things differently.

tl;dr version: I'm burnt out and want to reclaim my weeknights. Somebody else take over making these threads please.

On with the thread.

EDIT: In case anyone was wondering I came to this decision (and wrote the above) shortly after making last week's CBD thread, and before learning of DC's major September relaunch announcement. And if anything my negative, pessimistic reaction to that news in this GAFer's opinion only reinforces the need for me to step down.

Also, if all that seems dramatic and attention-seeking, understand this. I've been making this thread steadily for the last year-and-a-half, and sharing that responsibility with others for years beyond that. This is not a decision I came to easily, and it just didn't seem right me simply saying "I quit" without trying to explain why.

Thanks Spike.

Now, would it be possible for Comics threads to go monthly or does weekly still work better?

take a bow, spike - you've done really great work here, and it's been appreciated.

X-Factor, Moon Knight, Hellboy & B.P.R.D. for me. Fear Itself has been pretty boring so far, but then i was totally prepared for an event-less summer is prolly the thing.

Monthly would work great if the OP linked to the new internal weekly post inside?

I agree with monthly.

Is it at all possible that certain people can take on each individual section? So somebody can organize Marvel, somebody else can organize DC, etc...

*salutes* Thanks for all the hard work, Spike.

Fuzzy

I would bang a hot farmer!
To tell you the truth the only images I cared about in the OP were the merchandise since I would see the covers any way.

Thanks Spike! Go do fun things!

With that said I move for a single OT dedicated to weekly comic books. That way a conversation can last and be bumped within the same thread. A monthly thread isn't as good because you can't carry over conversations about a book that only ships once a month. I also don't think we really need the weekly title list. There are plenty of resources for that online, and I'm sure most of us have our own pull lists already anyway.

/2 cents

This week is gonna be Flashpoint centric for me. I was planning on catching up on my unread pile, but then stupid target had to go and sell me infamous a week early. We'll see how this goes.

Spike, it almost seems like an impossible task for anyone to take the reins. You've done an amazing job week in and week out and I always look forward to your threads. Cheers.

I like Satchwar's idea of having people chip in and come together to make the thread if it keeps the weekly format.

Thanks for everything, Spike. This thread, and the rest of comics-gaf, is in large part the only reason I bother posting anymore. I definitely haven't been posting in the weekly threads as much in the last couple months, but that's mostly because my backlog is ruining my life.

Anyway, thanks again, pal.

boy do i hope uncanny x-force gets better this week

Spike, all you have to do is copy and paste the weekly lists from diamond or whatever, we can then actually engage in, you know, comic book conversation. thanks for making the threads. maybe we can bring nomoment back from... wherever he is and have him take the mantle of the comic thread in an exciting and brand new #1 thread in September.

Thanks for your hard work Spike. Even though I'm a junior I have been posting in this thread ever since you took the mantle. In fact this is pretty much the only thread i post in.

This week I have flashpoint, secret six and moon knight.

Does anyone have any recommendations for which flashpoint minis I pick up?

Thanks for all your work. Maybe we should just have one thread to discuss weekly comics like the Manga people do. Glad to see that DC news didn't make you quit comics as a whole.

Three cheers, Spike. Thanks so much for all your hard work.

Celebrate by taking the three and a half minutes to read Flashpoint #2. Yeesh. We sure Flash lost his powers? Because that shit went by puhretty fast.

Also, the creative gulf among the Flashpoint tie ins is astonishing. From Azzarello and Risso to teams I literally have never heard of until today. DOING A GREEN LANTERN BOOK. Is it September yet?

Fear Itself on the other hand. Whoo boy. Matt Fraction and Stuart Immonen were born for this.

Thanks for doing an amazing job with the weekly comic thread for ages, Spike. Go enjoy a well deserved rest and get back to, you know, actually reading comics!

I've always loved these threads Spike, even if I didn't always post (since I don't buy single issues much anymore).

You've earned your rest.

350662-big_boss_salute_super.jpg

I could see this thread working better as a monthly thing like the What Are You Reading thread.

Loved your work Spike. Glad you aren't done with comics and will still be posting here.

Haven't looked at the releases yet but I know there's a few things I'll pick up. The DC relaunch has me worried about Batman though. Grant Morrison's run has made me a comic Batman fan again. I may quit reading the old Dark Knight for awhile if this relaunch gets rid of Inc (and Damian).

Aw man, I forgot about Green Lantern as well since I'm going the trade route with that series. The reboot just happened with him. The only good thing that can come from that is maybe seeing some more Hal instead of just "Green Lantern". But I kind of figured they were going somewhere with that point from what I've heard on the Internet.

Why not just make a sticky-ed Comic book thread?
If anyone wants I can write up a list of recommended comic book series (others are welcome to contribute their list), we could give it to the OP and he'll put it up in the first post. Of course, should this list be VERY BIG, it could be put into a .txt file and uploaded to Megaupload or such. It'd be pretty helpful for those wanting to get into comic books.

At any rate SONIC 225 FINALLY! Also Chip n' Dale #7 HYPE!

Spike, don't really post on here, or read comics anymore, though I did in the past. But I do want to thank you for these threads as I do always pop in, check out the covers, and you're commentary. It has certainly been a pleasure.

Spike,

Just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work and efforts. Just recently got back into comics after picking up a few tpbs and even though I didn't post in every weekly thread I appreciate all the time and effort.

You rock!

Adventure Comics #527
Flashpoint #2
Flashpoint Batman #1
Superboy #8

Amazing Spidey #663
Herc #4
Uncanny Xforce #11
Xfactor #220
Xmen #12

I'll see about the other Flashpoints look before I'm sure but Batman is a must

Thanks for making the comic threads, Spike. I've lurked in all of them until finally taking the plunge on fcbd.

As for thread ideas, I liked what you did last week: An individual thread for Action Comics and X-Force. It seemed to generate more posts than the weekly threads, although most of them were, "bad art". It's something I've noticed in the past too with Hamburglar's comic threads about a single comic.

Why not have individual threads for the weeks 2-3 big books, like the ones Spike mentions in his thread titles?

Anyway, this week for me it's Flashpoint and Flashpoint Batman. Maybe one more if something catches my eye.

Thanks for doing these threads every week, Spike.

Anyway I am picking up the Flashpoint books, DC Universe, and Batman Beyond this week.

Immonen, I'll definitely give you but Fraction? Only the Asgard scene had any resonance for me. Smash, smash, smash the three and a half minutes away as well.

Aww...sad to see you go, Spike. These threads got me in to reading comics again! But yeah...maybe monthly is the easier call for something like this.

As far as pickups:

Flashpoint, Flashpoint Batman, X-Force, and Static Shock for me.

Is anyone reading the smaller Flashpoint miniseries? Batman is the only one that appeals to me right now, but I'm curious to see if any of the others are worth reading.

Thanks for doing this, Spike. I haven't been reading weekly comics for a while, but I always pop in your threads. I would, however, like to check out Flashpoint. It's a good jumping back in point, right?

50 Girls 50 was so very brilliantly mischievous that I had to pick it up. Two girls in full space suits fighting to stay alive on a hostile alien world while the planet's atmosphere erodes their suits page by page. Sixteen pages in, they're wearing "jungle girl" bikinis and even those are STILL eroding; and by the time they get rescued they're completely naked. It's so prurient and absurd you can't help but laugh.

Also, peeked at Fear Itself #3 on the shelf...
we certainly can't have TWO Captain Americas running around with a movie on the way, now can we?

Excellent work Spike, your OP's will be missed, but I totally understand.

So how awesome has Flashpoint been? I have a feeling I'm going to end up buying most of the tie ins too, which I didn't foresee, but what're you gonna do.

I absolutely love what they're doing in Abin Sur - Green Lantern, a fun new take on
Blackest Night, the White Entity, and Atrocitus crucified to the Red Lantern symbol
. Also really enjoyed the twist on Sur coming to Earth.

Batman was fantastic too, can't wait to see where they're going with this.

If nothing else, the current DCU is going out with a bang.

Penguin

I picked up a handful of Flashpoint tie-ins randomly. Well except for Batman since I'm a whore for the character.

Really dug the Abin Sur story. I like the references to the proper DC timeline, though I hope they don't do what seems like hinting at already.

Batman was good, but that ending.. boy that ending. As I said on Twitter, he Ganondorfed him good.

I have no idea what I was supposed to be reading in Secret Seven....

Speaking of Secret Seven, my gawd was Secret Six awesome or what? I love the book so much.

Thanks, Spike. I always read through your threads and discover new comics that are coming out. It's awesome.

I hope someone else will take over the duty.
