Real question is, can digital distribution break the stranglehold Diamond has on comics by attracting enough new readers, before that stranglehold becomes a deathgrip that drags them all down.

I think the technology serves as an additional barrier to entry. Beyond that, do digital comics (ones purchased legally, that is) offer some kind of preview mode allowing you to sample more than just the comic's cover?

I love that I can get read comics on my Ipad. But I'm not sure the technology is going to be able to pull in new readers.

And, of course, the technology does nothing to address the issue that comics, as a medium, are not very friendly toward new readers.

I think it's the best chance that there's ever been. There are millions of people with iPads, far far outweighing the normal comics audience. Capturing just a fragment of those numbers could blow retail away. But I guess it all comes down to advertising, which is something that just never happens.

Really though, I don't necessarily think the death of the current market would be a great thing. Even if DC and Marvel and diamond all went under, there would still be a wealth of talent that love making comics, and lots of people who love reading them. Maybe breaking comics' reliance on superhero companies could be the best thing for it. Kirkman has a neat editorial in the first issue of Thief of Thieves, dreaming about non-cape books becoming commonplace and reading comics being as common as watching movies or TV. But really, that can never be a reality as long as comics are ghettoised telling inconsequential bullshit stories to continuity nerds. Some cape books can be fantastic, but the overwhelming majority are bland and boring and a waste of energy on all fronts.

Yep, Comixology has three page previews for most of its books.

Even though I don't really read digital comics, that's what got me back into reading comics besides the occasional trade and Archie digest from Publix. When the iPad first came out there wasn't much on it and so I went in scanning some of my old One Piece issues to read on the iPad and then I started reading from htmlcomics.com which got me interested in other super hero stories like Morrison's Batman run. After that I realized I'd rather read paper over digital because the iPad is just a little too small to read issues natively.

Finally tracked down Frankenstein 1 & 2 and All Star Western 1. Newbury Comics still had first prints too. I'm really enjoying Frankenstein and will probably pick it up unless Jeff Lemere is leaving that book soon (he's not, right?).

He is but claims the dude who's replacing him was secretly already working with him on it. It's some guy he's collaborated with before on his Sweet Tooth series. Lemire is going to Justice League Dark.

I think at least one person here said they order from CheapGraphicNovels.com. Wondering how long it usually takes and if they send a confirmation when it is shipped. I got my order confirmation a few days ago but nothing since then.

Aw damn. Thanks for telling me, I thought I read something recently about that. And Travel Foreman is off Animal Man soon, that's a bummer too!
Maybe I'll just buy Frankenstein off the shelf for a few issues with the new writer before I subscribe.

Anyone able to tell me how Justice League Dark is a Justice League comic? I picked up two issues and it was just weird. It didn't help I wasn't familiar with a lot of the characters and the art was kind of distracting with all the spell energy art going on.

They liked the concept of having a teamup book with magic characters. They decided that the justice league was a pretty recognizable label to market it under.

Justice League Dark isn't merely a Justice League comic, it's the best Justice League comic.

I've enjoyed a lot of stuff from DC's new 52, but all the artist and writer shuffling they're doing is pissing me off. I'm thinking of dropping the entire line, no point in following any comic when they are going to change an artist/writer every 5-6 issues...

So on the next issue of Wolverine and the X-men, Logan and Quire go to an intergalactic Las Vegas(Lurg the Living Casino!) to win money to keep the school going.

Meanwhile, the X-men have gone inside Kitty Pryde's pregnant body to destroy the army of microscopic alien assassins.

Did anyone here pick up Fantastic Four: Season One ? Marquez's art looked nice.

Any reviews yet ?

Joey Esposito from IGN didn't like it.

I was gonna pick it up but it sounds like a pretty straightfoward adaptation of the origin, which I'm already familiar enough with. What I need is some kind of primer on Hickman's run so I can read current issues without feeling like a dumbshit.

FF has been great recently IMO.
I still like Waid's run on the series during the early 2000s the most though.
Speaking of which; what would you guys say are among the best eras/writers for the FF?

I take it you have to purchase the comics with a credit card?

Also, in the Wolverine in Las Vegas issue ... isn't that Quinton Quire a bad guy?

Well I guess you can buy them the same way you'd buy anything from the app store. So iTunes credit, bank debit card, credit card etc.

And Quentin isn't a bad guy so much as a douchey kid who is constantly pushing the boundaries of discipline.

Lee/Kirby then everyone else.

Byrne and Waid come next I guess, Byrne gets the edge because Waid can't draw.

Walt Simonson had a fantastic but brief run in the early 90s.

God I love Riveria's work. Best thing Marvel has done in the last 3 years is giving us Martin and Riveria goodness

Went to the comic book store on a whim today to pick up Secret Avengers #22 after having read 22.1 last week. I was blown away! This is a fantastic issue, from the art, which is very Winter Soldier-esque, to the plot, which has a covert, real-world aspect mixed with the bombastic omniverse trappings of an Avengers book. This is my first Remender book but I kinda see what all the fuss is about now.

Also I finished up Hush yesterday. Gat damn does Jeph Loeb write a lot. Every fight scene is littered with flow-of-consciousness musings from Batman about the most inane crap ever, which is so out of place when he's in the process of trying to kick someone's ass. "Catwoman. I trust her. Or do I? I must. She knows my secret. But Talia. What of her father? Distractions. He wants me to be distracted. I must clear my mind. It is the only thing that will save my life. Unlike Tommy. Oh Tommy. My childhood." Blah blah blah SHUT UP ALREADY. The book was good, but towards the end I just got so sick of Loeb and his monologues.

Went to get Birds of Prey #3-5 and found a copy of Adventure Time #1.

Just wanted to say that I love comics and I love you all Comic-GAF.

When the hell is JH Williams III coming back to draw Batwoman? It was easier to stomach all the bad writing when it looked like nothing else on the stands today. Now we got five pages dedicated to "Batwoman has an armored suit"

Yeah I know what you mean. His run on Supeman/Batman was interminable, simultaneous monologues from both supes and bats going on and on about their bromance. It's gotten to the point now where even when my favorite writers like Rucka use them I just skip over them. I find that I can't follow the flow of the writing or the action and so both come off weaker. I end up just reading the pages twice, once for each element.

july or august

c'mon, son

In other news, randomly picked up "Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin", and its awesomeness. Eric Canete has some of the most kinetic storytelling I've ever seen.

The impact of the attacks, the focus and shorthand of Iron Man's body before his fist takes off, the way he frames the body positions to exaggerate the FUCK out of the blows, sooo good.
