bandit, i bought your fake wonder woman book

i liked it

You're welcome! ^_^

Today was a totally girly comic day for me. Glory, Wonder Woman, Gold Digger, Transformers, and oh look - I picked up a book with a Frank Quietly illustration that doesn't suck ass.

It's like I always said - he can draw anything that isn't an icon or recognizable character. Please keep oatmeal golem man off my fuckin' superhero funnies! >:|

I just read the first issue of Peter Panzerfaust, and man was that a disappointing book. The story was boring and the art was woefully sparse. The artist didn't bother filling in backgrounds, drawing in faces, or even fleshing out textures. What a waste of $3.50.

So here's what I picked up today, two weeks' worth of new releases...

DC Comics:
Batman #6
Batman The Brave and the Bold #16
Demon Knights #6

Marvel Comics:
Daredevil #9
Generation Hope #16
Thunderbolts #170
Uncanny X-Men #7
Wolverine and the X-Men #5
WatXM Alpha and Omega #2
X-Factor #232

Other Publishers:
Conan the Barbarian #1 (Dark Horse)
Glory #23 (Image) [Are you happy, Bandit? Are you?!?]
Peter Panzerfaust #1 (Image)
Warlord of Mars #15 (Dynamite)
WoM Dejah Thoris #10 (Dynamite)

Just some quick, shallow thoughts on some of the books I've looked at so far (possible spoilers, you have been warned):

-Wolverine and the X-Men #5: This comic. THIS COMIC. No matter what kind of day I've had, reading this comic always puts a big ol' smile on my face. So many wonderful moments of sheer zaniness and insanity on display, with Beast's biology lessons and Kitty's pregnancy dilemma and Logan's schemes to fund the school and the students playing off each other and the new alien menace... Then, you've got Bradshaw packing the background full of little details and interactions that breathe life into each scene. It's almost overwhelming! Together Aaron and Bradshaw are tickling my inner child like no writer has in years -- reading comics should always be this FUN.

-Batman #6: Hey now, THERE's the Batman we all know and love! Snyder seems to be the kind of writer who gets what makes Batman work: it's not the ridiculous amounts of "prep time," it's not the smug superiority that comes with being unbeatable... it's the resourcefulness and -- above all -- the WILLPOWER, to endure the worst and get that chance to succeed against all odds. DC may have f*cked up the rest of its line, but thanks to Snyder and Capullo this series is still firing on all cylinders.

-Daredevil #9: finger-sniffing jokes aside, this issue was pretty incredible. Visually, the whole subterranean darkness thing lived up to the cover and then some. What is the Mole Man up to, other than "eww"? And Felicia... well, Felicia did not disappoint I see; her moral quandary lasted all of what, ten seconds?

-Thunderbolts #170: this issue kind of got jumbled up but what fun! Troll doesn't talk much but always manages to steal the show with little moments, and I COMPLETELY agree with Moonstone's thoughts on Lancelot/Guinevere. Made me laugh.

-Conan the Barbarian #1: reads like a perfect jumping on point for new readers and I STRONGLY URGE THAT YOU JUMP ON. 'Queen of the Black Coast' is one of the best Conan stories, and Wood is doing a wonderful job with it so far. I was concerned about Cloonan's depiction of Conan, but it works here... and her Belit. Holy cow, does she exude sexy scary and CRAZY or what?

-Brave and the Bold #16: Action figure variants! Bat-Mite! Romance comics! Poignant commentary on cancellation! This issue had it all! And now... it's gone. :(

-X-Factor #232: ...Well. All I can say is, thank goodness THAT didn't happen a couple of years ago, am I right? Right.

I read one book today that had the hero taking on yakuza gangsters on motorcycles wielding chainsaws, then battling a cyber-enhanced samurai. The next book I read involved a giant talking communist gorilla with a machine gun, who escaped with a jetpack.

I fuckin' love comic books.

Atomic Robo?

Damn it, Guileless. Come back and spill the beans or I'm gonna have to go buy a copy of fricken Betty and Veronica tomorrow.

Haven't got to Atomic Robo yet, but Wolverine and Winter Soldier, respectively. Just two out of a whole bunch of fun books that came out this week.

Land's work has been "almost ok" at best and awful at its often worst. Its a shame that Gillen is stuck with him on Uncanny X-men. He's one of the very best character writers Marvel has, so good at digging into the subtitles and nuances of his cast...and he has an artist who knows jackshit about either of those two qualities.

I'm glad people seem to be digging WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN, because I plan on being on this book for a nice long run.

Ah, music to my ears, Jason Aaron.

Bought 2 damned Greg Land comic books today. :(

LOL LOL LOL

This is why you need to follow creators and not characters.

If the alt shop has the new Seeley issues of Witchblade I may snag those. No excuse. I miss the 90's cheese and wish somebody would bring it back. D:

Or let the Japanese have another crack at it. :3

Well I bought the books in spite of Greg Land. I've been tolerating X-Men. I suppose I could have skipped Avenging Spidey though. Marvel laid that trap and I fell for it like a moron.

I skipped Avenging Spider-Man. I don't like Zeb Wells enough to deal with Land, and I already got an Amazing Spider-Man book this week. I bought Uncanny X-men because of Gillen + X-men, and I've liked this story arc so far.

Has anyone been following the non-spider-man ultimate books? They've gone really downhill since ultimatum. It seems like they're slowly undoing Loebs stinker and just making the ultimate universe act like 616.

Hickman's Ultimates is good, when Ribic/White are on art duties

I love Travel Foreman so much, but I'm really gonna miss Jesus Saiz on BoP. He draws all them chix so damn perfect and so consistently from panel to panel.

Yeah I really missed his art this week. BoP wasn't as good as it was in issues past.

I just finished reading everything else I picked up today (Memorial #1-3, Daredevil #9, Winter Soldier #2, Supergirl #6, Catwoman #6, Batman #6, and Wonder Woman #6). This was an extremely strong week (with the exception of Peter Panzerfaust which was awful). I have to say this again though - Butch Guice and Bettie Breitweiser are the best artistic team on the planet. Every panel they create is pure magic.

Anyway. I knew Batman was going to be fantastic, and it didn't disappoint. I reread #5 then immediately #6 and god damn dude. You feel every punch and every scream; every single action in this issue has gravitas. It was very impressive. However, what really surprised me this week were Supergirl and Catwoman. Supergirl was absolutely bonkers; massive action in the big city with some big plot exposition mixed in. You can sense that Supergirl is finally starting to come into her own, to understand her powers, and is taking control of her own destiny. And then that final reveal - holy shit!

Catwoman was good for a different reason, namely that its final pages were tinged with some powerful emotion. You finally get the sense that Selina is an emotionally broken person who hides behind her Catwoman persona, and everything that she has done up to this point, all the crazy antics and near-death experiences finally make sense. I didn't cry (like Jedeye does every time he reads Archie apparently), but I definitely felt my emotions welling up. Well done Judd Winick and Guillem March.

Man, I knew I got into comics for a reason. When done right, they are an absolutely fantastic medium to tell a story.

Butch Guice and Bettie Breitweiser are goddamn amazing. I want them to be on Winter Soldier forever.

I didn't like Batman #6 very much. Sudden superpowered Batman out of nowhere no-selling allll the damage from the last issue and a half. Its kinda like a pro wrestling match where Wrestler A beats the shit out of Wrestler B for 20 brutal minutes, then suddenly Wrestler A wakes up and crushes him in 20 seconds like nothing happen.

Is there any artist at Marvel or DC that does a book every month, 12 a year, without fail? Revolving door artists are really starting to kill my buzz on some of my favorite books.

Sometimes I wonder if there's two Matt Fractions, the one who writers the clever comic bookery of Casanova, and the one who does the decompressed out-of-character garbage like Uncanny X-men and Fear Itself. It would explain SO MUCH!

So Cullen Bunn is replacing Jason Aaron on Wolverine in April. Haven't read anything from him yet, so I don't know what to expect, although Chris Samnee draws a killer cover art for it!

I think I'm gonna re-read Aaron's Wolverine run, just to have it all fresh in my head for this finale story arc in Japan.

Wait wait wait wait wait. Is he leaving the actual Wolverine comic or leaving Wolverine and the X-Men? There is a comic that's just Wolverine right? WatXM is my favorite comic ever right now and I can't have anyone else on that this soon.

No, just the main Wolverine book he's been off and on since the beginning of his career, pretty much. He's still writing WATXM. In fact, he recently posted on Twitter that he plans to have a nice, long run on the book. Years of fun WATXM stories to come!

The timing is pretty wacky cuz a lot of the books ship twice a month/biweekly. Stefano Caselli, for example, can and has done a monthly before. Problem is they got him on double shipping books like Secret Warriors and Amazing Spider-Man, so he's gotta swap out stories with other artists. Same thing with Ramos, or Checchetto.

Man, I can't think of too many. Larracoa has drawn every single issue of Fraction's Invincible Iron Man, which is nearing 50+ at this point. Dillion did the entirety of PunisherMAX, which is great...if you ignore the several month delay when he had to heal his broken hand. John Romita JR is pretty much never late, but he's also one of their top artists so they have him on rotation drawing lots of different things at any given time, from Avengers, to Kick-Ass 2, to the four chapters of AvX, and a billion and one variant covers/pin-ups.

Greg Capullo has drawn every issue of Batman so far, and the solicits through May say he's sticking to that. I'm not as familiar with all of DC's line-up, especially because they like to play musical chairs with their creators every month.

You can always follow Savage Dragon, is you're ok with it looking ugly as shit.

I've been operating under this theory for a while myself.

I think you just need to avoid the accelerated shipping titles. Not sure if Marvel is pulling the same shit with X-Men that they are with Spiderman, but that's the reason Spidey has rotating art teams.

There are artists out there that do hit deadlines, but nobody pays attention. Patrick Gleason on GLC was great, Doug Mahnke on GL was great. Ivan Reis was churning out a good deal of work at DC for a while there.

I think that once you find more creators to follow you'll realize that once folks have put in their hours and established themselves, they work at their own pace for the page rates they've earned. If you can come to peace with that you'll be a happier reader.

Erik Larsen lives the dream, you post on neogaf - sup ViewtifulJC(hump)? XD

I get frustrated every time I think about it.

Marcus To is going to Batwing, and Travel Foreman is going to Birds of Prey??? They need to trade books. Marcus To draws awesome women and if anybody should be taking Jesus Saiz's place on BoP, it's him.

edit:

It was actually pretty good, though the stylized baby faces are a bit odd. I like that they actually kept the aborted Alan Moore relaunch that almost no one read in continuity, more or less.

Yeah, everybody looks like a Cabbage Patch Kid. It's jarring.

Almost forgot: I read Batman #6 and heeeere we fuckin' go. Shit got dumb this issue.

It was fine until Bruce became a BatGodDemon and owned whatshisname like he was nothing.

Only took two posts for the baseless Frank Quitely jab, you're falling into routine, TTOB.

@Satchwar, I had the exact same issue. Batman gets the shit kicked out of him for 9 days, then suddenly goes Super Saiyan like he's fucking Goku and no-sells everything. So, so, sooooo dumb

He didn't become anything. He was just tripping balls and kicked his ass through sheer will.

Snyder writes a good story but I'm still iffy on his ends. Back with the first "arc" of his Detective run pre-52 he went with the typical bad guy gets super buff powers, still loses but is lost in the water.
