What's the consensus on Comixology here? I'm tempted to give it a shot, but not having a personal offline copy is holding me back from buying anything.

Still without luck

I'm pretty sure you can use all of comixology's comics offline with the app. You just need to download them first.

Not sure though, checking now... yep.

Great if no comic shop nearby. I'd buy everything on there, but I prefer hardcovers, so usually I use it for digital exclusives like Bandette or Lil' Gotham.

Oh hey, someone else who reads Bandette. Love that book. :)

Comixology has helped me a lot with getting into comics, and while DRM is a bit of a bummer, I've found it really useful in trying out new books and tracking down back issues.

Yeah, you can have an unlimited number stored offline. It defaults to a 500MB limit but you can change it to 1GB or unlimited in the options. I have about 6GB on my tablet right now, or about a fifth of what I own.
Guided view is great for phones, but I still try to do my reading on tablet. (Rooted Nook HD+) I definitely think they look a lot better on tablet than on print.
He's probably thinking of Marvel Unlimited, which I've heard is pretty awful. (Six offline comics, missing text bubbles, missing or out-of-order pages, etc.)

Comixology's major downsides are that you can't resell your comics and you often pay more than at retail. So, not a great combination imo. A sometimes shitty back catalog too.

I enjoyed Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina, read them both as they were running. Enjoying Saga too. Guess I didn't see the obnoxiousness.

Is there even a value in reselling comics anymore? Doesn't seem to be much of a market.

Which titles cost more in Comixology than in store?

presuming you get any discount at a shop, all Marvel titles cost more considering they don't drop a dollar in pricing after a month like DC does. I buy from dcbs with a 40% discount, so it's not even an option really to buy a marvel book for 3.99 digitally when i can get it, sometimes with a digital code included, for 2.39. Digital pricing is ridiculous to me.

Outside of that, reselling comics doesn't tend to get you more than $1-2 an issue, tops, when selling them in a six issue or more set. That's enough to make it worthwhile to me though.

I liked the first ~10 issues of Ex Machina, never cared for Y but I always lose interest in BKV comics at some point

Basically this. My LCBS gives me a 25% discount. So my $2.99 books are $2.25. That adds up for someone who has a pull list almost 40 deep.

And while comics may not pull in top dollars on a regular basis, when reselling, sometimes you'll actually get a good portion of your money back. And the fact that you can get any at all is a huge plus, imo.

And holy fuck. People are fucking crazy with Saga resales on eBay. WTF. o_O

I think I'm going to sell my whole Morrison Action Comics run. I just don't care about having it.

Will keep issue 13 though.

the only run i'm keeping from DC will be Wonder Woman and Batman Inc, though with Inc i'll likely sell them when the OHC comes out in a couple years since DC are jerks and are releasing Inc in two standard sized trades. I get that they want more money like that at the expense of people who own the first volume OHC and want the second asap, but it's annoying.

my ebay auctions aren't showing much traction though, no one wants my latest 6 issues of Fables or Remenders last 8 or so Secret Avengers issues. Last thing that sold was Swamp Thing 1-17 and Animal Man 12-17 Rotworld stuff for $40.

If I was smart, I would be buying hard copy #1 issues for every creator-owned Image series. Enough of them double and triple in value during the first year or so to be worth it. However, I am lazy and therefore either skip the series or pick them up digitally.

EDIT: There is an auction for a first printing set of Manhattan Projects #1-10 that currently has bids of $100.

That's nothing. Check the prices of the first four issues of Peter Panzerfaust. I dropped the series because I just wasn't into it, but I have first-printings of those four issues.

Also, I've been wanting to check out Punk Rock Jesus. Is it worth it, ComicGAF?

Can anyone recommend some good horror/fantasy type comics? I've been reading the first trade of House of Mystery (new series) and really digging it so far. I've already tried reading the Walking Dead and didn't care for it, so am looking for recommendations other than that series.

Locke and Key.

Can't say American Vampire counts as "horror"

On the topic of American Vampire, I finally caught up and holy shit I need more of this right now.

My only worry is that Snyder is taking on numerous writing projects that he might me a little worn out by the time he starts writing American Vampire

Rafael Albuquerque's art is a quite a beast though and Sean Murphy's as well

He's 'only' got American Vampire, The Wake, Batman and Superman Unchained right now, and some of those releases are staggered. That seems manageable.

Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing.

I think he said he's just setting it up so he doesn't have to write more than two things at the same time, which is understandable. So I'm not too worried about his workload.

i'm definitely getting Hawkeye OHC, right now i just have the single issues which i might keep those too since i like owning my favorite books' runs.

Also, Bendis' second recent New Avengers arc is terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible and i feel terrible when reading it. I hope some lucky person buys vol 1 and 2 when i put it up on ebay, it's really good! His Avengers with Romita Jr. wasn't this bad, though it was fairly forgettable.

It's listing the OHC as being over 200 pages, though. As opposed to the TPB which is 130-ish. Perhaps it's a combined book of the first two volumes? That would be amazing.

God dammit, Marvel. You're going to make me buy it again!?

At the same time, I'm totally psyched.

Wow, glad I waited on the trades. I know, I'm terrible for not having read Hawkeye, yet.

Batwoman has been consistently great, and I haven't read much of the others yet, but I did like WW #0.

Uncanny Avengers
New Avengers
All New X-Men
Thor God of Thunder
Captain America

Are my favorite titles to come out of Marvel Now so far. Batman and Aquaman are both worth reading, Johns is doing some good work with Arthur.

All of the titles you've listed are still good/great, imo. The only ones that might be questionable, are Supergirl and Worlds' Finest, but they *seem* to be on the rise if the last / upcoming issues are to be an indication.

I prefer OHCs. They're quite a bit more study than TPB...

edit: Also, with regards to reselling: I used to resell cards back in my MTG days and it really cuts down on the cost of the hobby. I'd imagine it's the same for comic books in that it's not to generate a profit but rather to reduce the effective price of subsequent issues.

What's the consensus on Comixology here? I'm tempted to give it a shot, but not having a personal offline copy is holding me back from buying anything.

I started off buying my regular books on Comixology (but bought all my trades, hardcovers physically) because it was just cheaper than buying anything here in freaking Australia, but I soon gave that up and am now buying physically because like you I just dont like not having a physical copy. I also find that I'm less likely, or in most cases dont go back to a comic once I've read it in digital form because it was just annoying to have to go to the website/app click on the comic that cycle through the pages to go to what I'm looking for specifically. it was very much a read it once then discard sort of deal so I just saw it as not worth it. At least with physical copies I can flip through them whenever at my leisure.

That said, I still use Comixology for their sales and on some older issues which I might be interested in checking out. And I really like the guided view. So overall, if you're not too bothered about not owning physical books then Comixology is great.

Uncanny Avengers
New Avengers
All New X-Men
Thor God of Thunder
Captain America

Subtract ANX (haven't really bothered but Uncanny #1 was assssss) + New Avengers (hickmaaaaaaaaaaaaaan) and add FF + Young Avengers (which I'm digging even if y'all aren't) and that's my list too. There are others that are pretty good but those are the strongest, I think.

If you meant Uncanny X-Men, I agree it sucks. Maybe All New is only good because of the gimmick but I really like it so far. Odd to have polar opposite feelings since they are companion books...

Hmm. I never bothered to set up a pull list at the LCBS because I'd end up spending so much money. Wonder if they have any kind of discount set up.

Interesting about selling books though. I wonder what I could get going through my old boxes and putting runs up on ebay or something...

In any case, I've gone pretty much full comixology at this point and love it. Just no longer had the desire to load up on floppies at the house save for the occasional trade.

As someone who basically hasn't read comics since around 1994, Todd McFarlane's negative influence on comic book writing is staggering.
I remember how annoyed I was by his approach to writing Spider-Man, which was to come up with one thin story idea and stretch it out for five or six issues, (with copious amounts of splash pages and two-page spreads as well) rinse, repeat.
That approach is universal now. It's amazing how little happens in comics these days. I'm loving a lot of what I'm reading, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

I consider Todd McFarlane's influence on comic writing nonexistent. You want to point at someone for decompression? Bendis is probably your guy. I'm sure there are guys before him that decompressed stories, but really, he was the man behind the movement.

Was Bendis doing it in 1990? Was he even in comics? How do you know Bendis didn't look at that and think, "Holy shit! I could write 10 books a month if I pulled that crap."?
