I have always wanted to start reading comics, particularly the Hulk and Punisher, but it seems like I am so far behind I will never catch up. Luckily, I came across Marvel's 700 free books event and jumped on it so I have somewhere to start, but even with Marvel Zombies, the story doesn't start in the first book, it is the continuation of something, and I don't even know what.

I'll stick with The Walking Dead, which I have been reading since day 1 so I don't feel so overwhelmed at the moment.

For punisher i recomend greg Rucka's run that just finshed up.

also Franken castle

Hulk you can start up with Indestruable. it a new series that is only up to issue 6 so the first trade should be out soon

If you like Walking Dead you should read Kirkman's superhero book: Invincible. The much more entertaining book imo. The Ultimate Collections are beautiful and cheap on Amazon.

And yeah like slightconfuse said, Indestructible Hulk is pretty rad. Hulk tries to get his fuck on with Atlantians and is going to beat up Frost Giants.

The thing with the big legacy characters is that each new writer is pretty much going to do their own thing, so you won't need to know about previous events and if you do then they'll tell you about them.

Hulk is awesome.

Thanks guys, but I hardly know what any of you are talking about. The only writer I know is Kirkman, and I don't know anything about any artists, art styles, or anything. haha. I will try my best.

Was Bendis doing it in 1990? Was he even in comics? How do you know Bendis didn't look at that and think, "Holy shit! I could write 10 books a month if I pulled that crap."?

No, Bendis wasn't relevant in the 90s as far as I know; that doesn't mean McFarlane is responsible for modern storytelling style. I guess you are trying to say that the writing of a man who was very popular as an artist and never established himself as a writer is a more likely the reasons comics are more decompressed than one of the three most popular writers in comics through the 00s. That doesn't really make sense. You think Matt Fraction wrote decompressed comics because he was really influenced by McFarlanes work and he thought Spawn was super rad?

Here is the first trade of the Hulk series the other posters mentioned. You could also catch up by buying the issues on Comixology if you want to read comics on the computer or a tablet.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0785168311/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Comixology's major downsides are that you can't resell your comics and you often pay more than at retail. So, not a great combination imo. A sometimes shitty back catalog too.

I'd be curious to see anyone's story about being able to resell even 5% of their current purchases for even 50% of what they paid.

Comixology are running a Justice League sale. I'd love to hear some recommendations. I'm looking at Grant Morrison's JLA, Meltzer's Justice League of America and Identity Crisis. Thoughts? I've always enjoyed Grant Morrison's work. Can I expect the same quality here?

It's good, he manages to write all members of the league well and they get their own time in the spotlight so it doesn't come across as unbalanced as some writer's versions of the league do.

Also, "Yield!"

Sounds good. I've heard his work elevates the Justice League to a mythology. It's definitely something I want to check out. Have you read Identity Crisis or Meltzer's Justice League of America?

That depends on what you are trying to sell of course. You never can tell what will be popular. But I don't know, I get my $3 books for slightly over $2, so if I resell, it's not the hard to get at *least* a buck per.

And I'll say this, at least you have the option. I hate when digital is the same or more for less ownership of your purchase. Some people may not care, but it's an undeniable fact.

After Marvel went overboard last week with 300 comics added to MU, this week there are 10.

10.

That's some kind of balance.

Yes, I didn't like Identity Crisis all that much and can't remember Meltzer's JLA. Morrison's JLA introduces some great characters (Zauriel, Prometheus) but maybe suffers from going on too long if anything.

Wish they had a few more issues of Moz's JLA on sale, but I'll take it.

Also, there's a Barry Windsor Smith drawn Iron Man on the Marvel sale that looks AMAHZING.

It would have been cool if they had more issues of JLA - that book is pretty solid for like, three consecutive runs.

Yeahhhhhh I would definitely not go that far. It's a good run, not amazing but solid. Personally I find his Justice League is stopped to easily at times. I don't know if I would say he gives all of them a fair share of time in the spot light either, it seems he hardly ever uses Kyle and seems to not really know how to handle him or what to do with him IMHO. Those things keep it from being amazing to me.

So I'm super late to the party here, but I just finished Amazing Spider-Man #700 and WHAT HAVE THEY DONE?!

I don't like the direction they've taken at all. I've heard good things about Superior Spider-Man but I almost don't want to read it out of spite.

This can't be permanent right? Someone tell me everything is going to be okay.

Locke and Key.
Just caught up on Omega #4. Christing Christ. Those were some phenomenal splash pages. Book is delivering so hard right now.

Also caught up on Saga to #12. Had no idea they were commanding crazy prices on EBay. I have all the floppies... Hmmm...

Loved D. Oswald Heist's appearance in #12. Kinda reminded me of "Ronald D Moore" in Portlandia :D

Just bought BKV's Private Eye too. Loving the artwork so far. I hope the "pay what you want" model gets some legs. I'm not a fan of the current prices for digital distro, and if the creators get a full cut of the funds, then all the better

Dude, it's comics. Come on, they've already got people in the book figuring out what's going on. It's a matter of time. Just have some fun with it, Otto's pretty fun as Spidey.

Of course it's not permanent. Superior is a fun read though.

I got that too. Love me some BKV. It's an interesting start, though the "everyone abandoned the internet" conceit is a pretty far-fetched. The art is great. I paid a dollar.

Looking at the JL preview, it doesn't end there: it looks as though Johns is already rehashing the
"Batman has developed specific countermeasures against the other Leaguers" betrayal angle, and next month's cover presumably reveals Despero as the mastermind who's mind-controlling Batman into actually using them against Superman and the others.

So,
a major DC villain discovers Batman's secret paranoid jerk plans for killing his teammates and exploits them to his benefit, creating a rift between the Dark Knight and the League?
Hmm, why does that sound so familiar?

And honestly it's hard to care about any of this. This JL has no identity. Why the fuck do we care about them fighting with each other? Fucking new52.

Of course they have an identity -- they're the League that repeatedly fights amongst itself! ;)

All we need now is Gorilla Grodd to come along, with his trust-falls and team-building camp exercises, and they're completely boned.
