COMICS! |OT| August 2016. That's Rare Groove. Volume is Crucial.

EDIT: I'm still catching up on Hellboy, got another 20 trades to read haha

OH, it is super savage at first haha. When I started out, I just read Hellboy obviously, until I got up through volume 6. At that point I'd figured out I was going to buy it all, but I also had the bug, so I couldn't really be patient about it. I bought Hellboy 1-6 quite slowly. But then, when you want to go over to BPRD you look at it, and it's like, oh dear haha. At the time Plague Of Frogs had jsut finished so at least a) it was just those 14 or whatever, and b) they were literally just doing the big collections, so I just got those. Jumping in now, there's relatively not THAT many more pure hellboy books. But there's another 13 volumes of BPRd on top of Plague Of Frogs, the 1940s books, now the 1950s books haha. And all the other stuff.

To be honest though, if I could go back, I wouldn;'t mind having it all there to read fresh again. It was so exciting having SO much stuff there to buy and all of it being so good each time. That's why I want to try the goon, there's a whole bunch of that.

Green Arrow by Lemire/Sorrentino Deluxe Edition, Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder Deluxe Edition

Those are some great modern recommendations! Lemire's Animal Man is pretty fun stuff too, those are some of the best series out of the new 52. Would like to give Soule's Swampy run a shot too.

I'm really hoping Lemire's Animal Man and Soule's Swamp Thing get deluxe editions eventually. I've been holding off reading them in hopes that they do.

Why am I the only one educating normal Gaffers on comic sales and culture in the sales thread? I thought you guys were the experts?

I honestly don't look at any other threads in the whole of Off Topic & Off community. I pretty much only check the gaming side for news haha, I hate discussion video games. It's more miserable that discussing comics.

Hahah right, that makes sense why you missed them out then. Really good shit. I think DC are in a fine place right now, but the biggest hole is that *dark* push from the new 52 original line-up, They had some great stuff in there. They even got China Mieville to write a comic, haha. Would like some of that back, and not just constantine.

Yeah, I read the Dial H deluxe edition awhile back and that was a crazy experience!

Haha yes! Jealous of the deluxe. I had read the series awhile back but I asked for the trades at christmas. I guess my partner pushed them off on my sister and she jsut bought me the regular trades. Don't get me wrong, perfectly nice books, but deluxe is deluxe is deluxe. Have you read any of his books? He goes so much further. With the language he uses, the plots etc., really weird and dirty worlds.

Looooads of dipshits in the OT thread about that Outhouse piece.

Like seriously, if you can't get into a comic with a big shiny #1 on it, in this, the era of the All-Recap, you're a dipshit and I feel nothing but scorn towards you. It's not even a matter of effort. They're just making it sound like you need all this information to understand a story about Batman punching a dude, when. No. That's not how it works.

The most BIZARRE thing to me is Dial H being the first deluxe edition DC did for New 52. I mean, I'm glad they did it, but what a strange choice for them when SO MANY more popular options existed.

I have not read any other stuff from him.

Woah, there was a lot more posts overnight than they normally are. We've had a real surge in new people lately.

Anyway, despite having a terrible (absolutely terrible) cover. Spider-Man 7 was really good. Weird that
Bombshell
was the voice of reason. Still liking that he hasn't gone too overboard on Goldballs.

Haha probably just because he's a quote unquote real author. I imagine his fanbase has pushed sales of those trades, HC and regular, to some impressive numbers. I wonder sometimes how much more American Vampire vol.1 has sold to date because it has Stephen King's name on it. We're talking a whole different ballgame in terms of books sold and readers with these guys haha.

Yea, we got a new one, football fan or something. We need to prep more questionnaires!

I remember buying American Vampire Vol. 1 at a B&N at the time cuz I was a big Twilight hater and needed some real vampires. I'll never forget it, Rafa's art on the cover looked so unique to me and seeing Stephen King quote about the book being the next big thing made me buy it. It's also my first introduction to Snyder before he blew up. I always treasure that book. It's over 5 years old but it still looks good.

I feel weird in saying comics have never been easier to just get into. We're in the age of one writer getting their own run from beginning to end.

It isn't how it used to be, where notable runs like Peter David's hulk or Moore's Swamp Thing start in the middle of another storyline.

As you should. The initial run was amazing. Second cycle is just them getting curb stompped

Absolutely! A really really nice book, the HCs are beautifully put together. I still really love the series too, but I totally omitted it form our favourite books thing because of the release schedule it's been on the last year or so. Sooo sloooow. One book a year is killing me. I really enjoy the writing and the art in it though, and of coouse having King on-board for just the beginning was fucking awesome. Would have been cool if he's contributed a little something to the anthology. Snyder must demand nice trades though haha because The Wake Hc is real nice and I REALLY like the severed HC. That's up on the level of the locke & key books.

EDIT: NICE. Just saw the stranger things season 2 announcement.

Cap Sam #1 and 2 were OKAY, i thought they were rather sluggish in the way the story unfolded, basically catching the reader up on where Sam was right now. Also, African Americans love Trump, Trump=safe, so it's really jarring to read this book which appears to have Sam have a more liberal bias. What the hell does Cap have to lose right now, he's on the outs of SHIELD, Steve Rodgers isn't happy with him, he's flying coach, give Trump a chance.

Haha, well I didn't read it during any delays, it was the trade I read, so that was definitely not a factor. It was the writing style he went for, I remember thinking it was god awful. I got rid of the book so I can't really go back and pick anything out particular now but I think it was prose-y text added in that was literally saying everything the art should of been saying itself, the dialogue too maybe although not sure. It was something along those lines, but I can't say exactly what now.

I thought it was a bit much but it was a fun way of showing that it is a frozen Red Skull clone from the Golden Age.

Someone help me with this:
That's not terrible though. Someone can read the latest issue for $3 and get a dollar back afterwards, the retailer can resell it for $2 and make $1 profit, and I can read last month's issue for $2 and maybe get 50 cents back on a trade in.
Can a customer trade-in their comics to purchase a new pull? Can a store refuse that if they have too many comics not selling?

My take on Nighthawk: Marvel sells comics based off events, no one cares about Nighthawk, Nighthawk book tanked. Let me know what articles get written as response to the Gun Guys books getting canceled.

Comics are almost certainly in a golden era right now…if you don’t care about Marvel and DC, something that is very easy at Stately Beat Manor. There are so may great comics coming out from Image, Dark Horse, IDW, Boom, Dynamite, First Second, Self Made Hero, Abrams, Retrofit, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, Koyama Press,

This was a great article.

Multiversity Deluxe Hardcover would be a good pickup. It has Pax in it.

For actual omnibuses, I would recommend Doom Patrol. It's a big book but it is amazing.

I've seen the Doom Patrol omnibus. That thing should count as a deadly weapon. It's not as ludicrous as Big Damn Sin City but it's close.

Is PvsJDvsA good?

It's alright. If you can get the Aliens vs. Judge Dredd vs. Predator hardcover from a year or two back that collects Predator vs. Judge Dredd along with Judge Dredd vs. Aliens, get that instead. Rebellion also sells their trades digitally and DRM free on their website.

when are ya'll gonna learn to stop posting in OT comic threads

I learned.

Uncanny Avengers volume 3.

Holy shit.

Thor.

The final few issues were insane. Great art to boot.

"I. CARE. NOT."

Strange, Dark Horse announced a new 5 issue witcher mini series today, digital only, launching today? Random. Still with Paul Tobin as writer, but a different artist this time round I have the first two series in trade. I liked the frist series quite a bit, it had a really nice clever little twist. Two was a bit more meh, but both have really nice art, and it's fun to see Geralt being Geralt in random adventures, feels a bit like the various short Hellboy stories, just bouncing into situations and dealing with them

Can be bought here I guess, I don't know about comixology or anything, this was the link I saw in the announcement: click

It is a crossover between both books or just logan coming over to wolverine?

Nearly at the end of geralds game, then back to comics. This book is like reading a car crash. It's horrible and sad and even a little sick but I can't not go on reading every detail. Think I'll grab joe hills latest novel alongside the new comics next week.

He's been in the arc from the start so 3 issues I think. I don't know if Laura has appeared in his own book.

I'm mostly fine with it and the tie-in has been great for the character just with this and the Banner stuff it shows that even if they think they're doing the right thing they're doing it in the worst way possible. Two people that have been prone to losing their shit they sent everybody possible after them. It's just so dumb.

Oh yeah I get what you mean I had a few issues with how they handled Bruce especially after reading the Totally Awesome Hulk tie ins. The response team way they are tackling the premonitions only seems to exacerbate the situations they are trying to prevent.

Like as cool as it was why the hell is Panther going to seemingly attack Cho in his own Hulk buster?
