COMICS! |OT| December 2015. Let's save the world, you and me, together. Ready?

Ah, you must not have been around for my monthly proselytizing of GHA.

God Hates Astronauts is about the most ridiculous comic I've ever read. The loose premise is that NASA creates and funds a super team (the Power Persons Five) to fight crime and prevent farmers from going into space. I think that's an actual plot point for like two issues if that. It's really about the most dysfunctional, egotistical group of super people ever and they inhabit a world full of talking animals and animal headed people (fun fact, GHA and Blast Furnace share a universe) doing awful and ridiculous things. It's chock full of 80s and 90s pop culture references and is extremely crude, hilarious, and has the best sound effects in comics.
You can read the first volume for free online at www.godhatesastronauts.com

This. Sounds. Amazing! I'm gonna have to peep that first free volume ASAP. Just grabbed my pull from the last month, though, so, I gots lots of reading to do. But thanks for the info.

So, I'm looking through IST to fill out my order and find Tim Drake's Robin books are being collected! Great! I also see Nightwing, but it has Greg Land as an artist. Is it any good? Whenever I see people talking about how bad he is now (which I agree with), I never see Nightwing stuff mentioned. Is it worth a buy?

I also read an issue in Suicide Squad with Rob Liefield on art, and it was really good. Hands, feet, everything looked pretty great. Felt almost JRJR of the 80's inspired. Is Liefield really bad, or have I been lied to?

Finished Sunstone, I enjoyed it, not sure how much exactly, but enough to breeze through it.

I still keep waffling back and forth between getting Vol 2. I love the art, the story has been heartwarming/fun, but it looks like it gets more sad after Vol 1.

Greg land on Nightwing and Birds of Prey is actually really good. It was back before he changed his style to the mess that he uses now. And Chuck Dixon written Robin, Nightwing, and Birds of Prey is worth it. Great stuff

Its an even balance imo. Sure there are sad moments but there are some super happy moments. Also we know this doesnt end badly so its all good. I can promise fun and hijinks if you continue. Also love.

btw Vol 2 is my fave and it is amazing.

Ok, so I organized my complete pull list. Gonna separate by DC, Marvel, Image and others.

Ongoings:

Clean Room
Detective Comics

Extrordinary X-Men
The Mighty Thor
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

Island
Lazarus
Outcast
Paper Girls
Rat Queens
Saga (in trade)
Southern Bastards
The Walking Dead

A Voice in The Dark (Top Cow.. If this is still being published..?)
Archie (Archie Comics)
Mercy Sparx (Devil's Due)
Switch (Top Cow)
Rachel Rising (Abstract Studios)

Minis:

Alabaster: The Good, The Bad, and The Bird (Dark Horse)
Atomic Robo & The Ring of Fire (IDW)
Spire (Boom Studios)
Twilight Children (Vertigo/DC)

And on trial are Symmetry (Top Cow), The Violent (Image), Red Wolf (Marvel), and Totally Awesome Hulk (Marvel). I have the first issue of these but have yet to read them and decide whether they'll be added.

So, 19 ongoings, 4 minis, and 4 on trial. That's respectable, I reckon. Wouldn't want my list to be any bigger than this.

I'm glad you finally tried it even if you don't continue on. :)

Sounds like the best Team. I was reading some of the back bonus material and it looked like it was bordered by either random art or vol 2 pages and i saw one outfit and thought " oh no, vol 2 spoilers". Yes, outfits are now spoilers in this Sunstone world.

Saga Vol. 5Sunstone Vol 2
Monster Vol. 2 by Naoki Urasawa
Flash Vol 1 by Geoff Johns
Robin Vol 1 by Chuck Dixon
Nightwing Vol 1 by Chuck Dixon

Sell/unsell me on Birds of Prey. I know very little about them, besides that Huntress is the worst part of the Arrow TV show. Also, are there any other really must read 90 comics that I should be checking out? I feel like everyone shies away from that whole decade when talking about great things.

The images are just stuff from his deviant art page, he uses lots of it over the series. I didn't mind seeing them and I had forgotten most of them before they popped up. its good like that.

you have to keep going so you can get to see Ally and Lisa's drunk/hungover brains trying to recall previous nights events.

Saga Vol 5 is also amazing but if you are 4 volumes in you already know that. I also wont convince you not to buy Sunstone over it. Check out Death Vigil on ist if you like sejic the trade is 8 issues and is great fun/value.

I wont convince you not to buy Birds of Prey because that series is awesome and has some really great characters. You should get it. Gail Simone takes over and its cool. The team has Huntress, Black Canary (also in arrow) and Oracle (Babs Gordon). Their roster has many other people over the years. Make sure not to start with the new 52 stuff. Go with the first run. Check out Secret Six also.

I am sorry for the scattershot opinions, its late.

90s had a ton. The most obvious stuff being the big Vertigo series like Sandman and Preacher. There's also a bunch of others like Doom Patrol (Morrison started his run in 89... close enough) and Flex Mentallo, Starman, Hellboy, Busiek's Avengers, Why I Hate Saturn, You Are Here, etc.

In addition to some comics themselves decided to gift myself another 40% Billy bookshelf (not the best cost wise but I didn't have space for another full) and added some stained oak supports to my old one which was suffering shelf sag in the old configuration. Plus a lot of extra space to play with over the next years because even with random novels tossed on still a lot of gaps.
and yes, nexus 5 pic so shit quality.

Next up on order at some later point Scalped 3, Manhattan Projects 2, and possibly Black Science HC when that drops.

So Dixons run started Birds of Prey and the book really only focused on Oracle (Barbara Gordon) and Black canary. Oracle would find missions, usually outside of Gotham and had Black Canary do the field work while she worked things from afar. A fun dynamic early on was Canary had no idea who Oravle was. It was just a voice giving missions and Intel and paid her. And Canary wasn't her first operative. Of course over time things evolved. But it was always a very fun and snappy book. Babs and Dinah really played off each other well personality wise.

Eventually after a healthy run Gail Simome took over. In her also lengthy run she widened the cast including characters like Huntress. Now Huntress in the Comics is way more balanced. She's edgier but not too the insane levels in Arrow.

Messi still pimping that Death Vigil. I really need to get around to reading it, but I read 10 comics today. That's more comics than I usually read in a week. It's exhausting.

I pimp it because I love it and believe it is truly great. I don't believe I have ever heard negative things from anyone I got to read it. Also Vol 2 is coming !!

This is the kind of shelf I need! I have already filled up my 3 shelf.

I think a fair number of people use Billys from IKEA but the full size ones will definitely sag under the weight of comics. Not sure if it will ever get so bad as the crack but mine had at least a cm of bend from edges to middle when I had a full shelf of OHCs.

Somehow, I always relate the great Vertigo stuff with the 80's, even though Hellblazer, Doom Patrol, Sandman, and Animal Man are all more in the 90's timeline. I'm thinking of more standard Cape books, there were a bunch of big events, Death of Superman, Knightfall, but from the reviews I've seen, none of these are worthwhile. I've heard some good stuff comes out of Death of Superman? I hadn't heard of Why I Hate Saturn or You Are Here, I'll look into those. Thanks!

I do kinda what you to try to talk me out of getting Sunstone. Not because I don't want to get it, or that I'm leary of it, I just want to see you say "Nah, you'll wanna read something not Sejic instead."

Probably gonna wait on Birds of Prey for a bit, unless someone can tell me some really rad things about it. I have a huge to-read pile, and want to try some old Nightwing/Robin first to make sure I like Dixon as a writer.

Huh. I thought the DV sales were too low to warrant it?

And how many issues of Switch are still in the chamber?

Sejic

i had a bad week. i kinda messed up my drawing arm and it took a while for the doctor to pinpoint the problem.not much i can do about that.
this has slowed me down a bit, causing switch 3 delay, so that will be out in january along with sunstone 4. then there was the whole
death vigil disappointment... and then... i got some messages... and more messages... a fuckton of messages....
and then i started doing lots and lots of math....thankfully i have a great wife who is by my side... so we decided.... one last try!
next year... i will do death vigil second arc.
if i'm gonna go out, imma go out kicking and screaming! aaand i'm off to work

Entirely likely this will do the exact same sales or less and it will be the end of Sejic's creator owned stuff as he had said before. I like that he just wants to please his fanbase but I wish he would get a break on one of his books that isn't Sunstone. Alas we have been over this. We know why he struggles.

He has shown the cover for 5 so I guess 5.

I haven't read Death of Superman, but I do think Knightfall actually holds up pretty well. Some of us here had the same discussion not that long ago and came to the same conclusion actually.

Why I Hate Saturn and You Are Here are both Vertigo comics done by Kyle Baker. I highly recommend them. Might be hard to find since they're older but they are so worth it. They're excellent stories with fun dialogue and great characters.

I also just read Hellcat! #1 and I really liked it! I have a soft spot for these more lighthearted superhero books so this is right up my alley. The art is adorable as well. I like the premise they set up with the first issue so I'm down for more. Plus there's cats, and cats make everything better (proof: Damian had a cat).

Looking around http://marvelmasterworksfansite.yuku.com/topic/6414/Hardcore-Shelf-Porn

Seems like a lot of people who go IKEA use the mini Billys because they don't really sag but unless you get White they basically cost the same as a full. White was like $20 cheaper I think than colored. Others use Kallax (or the previous version of) as well.

Other than that most supply stores probably have decent options but just remember the longer the shelf the more likely to bend unless you get 100% solid wood which is another cost level.

Seconded on Knightfall. It shows its age in a lot of ways, but it's actually still pretty damn good.

The whole Death->Rebirth of Superman arc is pretty interesting. The actual Death of Superman is super 90s, but it's got some solid energy to it and holds up well enough that I enjoyed it still. The middle part of the "arc" (World Without a Superman) felt like it kind of dragged and is bogged down in all kinds of plot and junk from that era that I didn't really care about, IIRC. The surprise for me, though, was Return of Superman, which actually has a pretty cool structure by alternating between the different "Supermen". (And it ends very, VERY 90s). So yeah, I guess that's my thoughts as someone who read this whole thing for the first time recently. It's fun but nothing mindblowing, and holds up well enough as long as you go in with tempered expectations.

Knightfall's solid as well, but you kind of need to keep in mind that, far as I can tell, the last part hits kind of satirical levels with the whole Azbat thing.

my next image purchase: That's Because You're A Robot. I saw a recommendation a page or two ago but i remember awhile back someone was talking about this. Sexcastle also sounds intriguing considering my love of cheesy funny actiony things, MacGruber is still one of my favorite comedy movies.

I'm overachieving in the comic reading, but That's Because You're A Robot was a bit disappointing, too light on substance for a good one-shot.

That's the nature of forums. Nobody is immortal, everyone is easily replaced. Nobody is losing sleep when a regular moves on.

I used to post here all the time a year or so ago. I stopped hitting it up as often when it morphed into waifu/figure GAF. Aside from an inflammatory Quitely statement or two, nobody misses me. I'll live.

Okay, so here's a random comic book-y question: what good/well regarded Superman stuff is there that ISN'T elseworlds? Seems like all the best stuff is out of normal continuity. Also, is Lex Luthor: Man of Steel an elseworlds or no (I was also debating Justice with a friend, but it looks like Wikipedia confirms I was right and it is)? Death of Superman is the big thing that came to mind off the top of my head.
Superman For All Seasons

Then let me be the bringer of joy!

In that I finally finished Remender's Uncanny Avengers Omnibus and it was super good!
It felt like a big epic that didn't need to stretch across the whole company while still having huge stakes. In that sense it sorta felt like DC's current JL arc, Darkseid War.

However...(Don't think I need to tag this but I will anyway in case someone stumbles in)
but apart from stealing Xavier's brain it felt like Red Skull's appearances in Uncanny Avengers were purely to set up AvX SIXAXIS rather than be part of the main story which felt like the Kang/Apocalypse Twins/Celestials stuff.

Twas glorious anyway.
Well,
the Red Skull stuff was effectively the basis for how Kang was manipulating the twins, and ultimately played into Kang's back-up plan (actually bringing in the concentration camps)
.

Omg yes. Cassaday's art is pretty legit.

So i'm 30 pages into Sunstone and this is a relationshipy bondagey comic? Could have used a warning.

I miss your reviews of Stan Lee Daredevil.

Yep. I made it through almost thirty issues before I threw in the towel. Maybe something I'll start up again next year. I think we're due for a complete reading/re-reading of something. Some folks mentioned The Walking Dead but I don't think that took off. Invincible? Morrison's Batman run? Open for suggestions.

I want to be like the guy who read every Spider-Man book. Crazy.

p.s I bought the three volumes of Sunstone and they're trash. A perfectly sweet love story caked in nonsense. I finished volume one, so fair try and all that. I'll stick to Saga for comic nipples.

Superior Spiderman really isn't grabbing me how I hoped it would. Kinda tired of Otto's schtick already. I only have 3 volumes left so ill finish it but yeah, thought it was going to be better.

Since people here were talking about it, I've start to reread Morrison's New XMen. Book is still amazing. Really holds up. I've read it all twice before, when it originally came put and a few years later but it's really interesting now to go back and read what's basically the set up for the entire modern era of XMen.

Now that I think of it, I read Morrison's JLA and New XMen at pretty much the same time, when I was quite young. Think he had a bigger influence on me than I'd like to admit.
